This invention relates to refrigerating apparatus of the type adapted to solidify carbon dioxide in small quantities as may be needed, and more particularly to means for automatically releasing and raising the cover for such apparatus.
There is now in use a portable apparatus by which carbon dioxide liguid may be solidified in small quantities ortable use,
or for use at soda fountains,'etc. Such apparatus comprises a casing containing a large number of coils of copper tubing, the
latter having one of its ends entering into a small chamber in which the liquid is solidified, and the other end of the tubing being connected to a-valve for controlling the flow of the liquid from a supply tank.
The control valve is opened manually and held in such a position by a spring controlled latch, which is automatically released to close the valve when a quantity of the gas has been solidified and the pressure in the valve has reached a predetermined amount.
Heretofore, apparatus of this type-has been provided with a cover which is clamped down tightly onto the casing during the solidifying process and afterwards unclamped and manually raised to remove the product. The operation of clamping and unclamping the cover is a source of inconvenience, especially when the apparatus is operated frequently, such as when employed in soda fountains.
It is an object of this invention to provide 'a device for automatically unclamplng and raising the cover of .a carbon dioxide solidifying apparatus.
A further object is the 0 resilient means in the cover 0 such an apparatus for gripping a cup in which carbon dioxide is .solidified in order 'to facilitate the removal and handling of the product.
These and other ob ects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, constituting a material part of this disclosure and in which:

Referring to the drawing, the casing 3 of a carbon dioxide solidifying apparatus is providedcwith integral ears 4, in which is mounted a fulcrum pin 5, having pivotally c0 mountedthereon the ears 6 integral with a cover 7. I
A spring 8 is coiled about the pin 5, and has one end 9 enga ing a lug 10 integral with the cover, for tfie purpose of normally urging the cover to rotate clockwise (Figure 1) to a. raised position.
The front side of the cover has a small plate 11 fixed thereto by means of screws 12, the plate 11' having integral therewith or rigidly connected thereto a rod 13, which,
w en the cover is lowered as shown in Figure 1, extends parallel with the sides of the casing 3. The rod 13 has a right-an ularly extending portion 14:, adapted to in engaged by the handle 15, which has an integral stud journalled in a bushing 17 inte gral with the casing 3, the stud being loosel connected to the shaft 16 which extend into a valve block 18, and is adapted to so control the opening and closing of the valve contained in block 18. (The valve not forming any part of this invention, is accordlngly not shown.) Projectin from block 18 is a pin 19 havmg fixed thereto one end of a spring 20 coiled about shaft 16,the other end of the fixed to a pin 21 mounted on shaft 16.
Projecting from a lug 22 on block 18 is so a pin 23,about which is coiled a spring 24 havmg one end fixed to pin 23, and its other end fixed to a latch 25 pivoted on pin 23. The latch 25 has a shoulder 26 adapted to engage a corresponding shoulder on a= flange 27 integral with shaft 16, and the spring 24 tends to hold the latch constantl in a position to snap into engagement with 'flan e 27'.
In operation, the cup 30 is inserted in the cover 7 between the grips 29,and the cover lowered-to the ositi'on sho'wIn in Figure '1. The handle 15 is then turned tothe horizontal position as shown Figure 2, during which operation it engages t e portion 14 of rod 13 and holds the cover tightl. over the casing 3. At the same time the andle' 15 rotates the shaft 16 to-, open the valve (not shown) in casing 18 to admit carbon dioxide gas, and the latch 25, by engaging flange 27, holds the handle in the horizontal POSltlOIh The carbon dioxide gas passes through the valve and through ,coiled tubing, (not shown) and in a well known manner is solidified in the cup 30. When a cake of solid carbon 'dioxide has been formed in the cup 30, the pressure in the valve block 18 increases to such an extent as to move the shaft 16 longitudinally until the flange 27 is slid from engagement with latch 25, at which time the spring 20 returns the handle 15 to a vertical position, and-the spring 8 raises the cover 7 which carries upward with it the cup 30 held by the grips 29. The cup 30 and its contents may now be easily removed fromthe cover.

1. In a carbon dioxide .freezlng a'p aratus having a casing and cover hinged t ereon,
resilient means normally tending to raise the cover, a rod fixed to the cover and extending downwardly along the sides of the casing, said rod having its lower end bent at an angle, a handle extending1 through the casing and positioned near t e rod, means to normally urge the handle to a vertical position, said handle being adapted when in a horizontal position to engage the angular portion of the rod to revent raising o the cover, and means to atch the ban le 'in a horizontal position.
2. In a carbon dioxide freezing ap aratus 'having a casing and a' cover hinged t ereon,
resilient means to raise the cover, a valve confrol handle rotataliliyi; mounted on the casing, means to norm y hold the handle in a vertical position, means to latch the handle in a'horizontal position, and means connected with the cover and enqageable by the handle to hold the cover tight down on the casing when the handle is in a orizontal position. a
3. In a carbon dioxide freezing ap aratus having a casing and a cover hinged t ereon, resilient means to raise the cover, a valve control handle rotatably mounted on the casing, and means connected with the cover and enga ed by the handle to hold the cover down tig tly on the casin 4. In a carbon dioxide reezing ap aratus having a casing and a cover hinged t ereon, saidcover having a hard rubber lining with a plurality of recesses, and resilient grips mounted in said recesses adapted to hold a June, 1929.
