Description

June 17, 1930. M. H. BORZIN 1,764,241
Filed March 19, 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet l Inventor 23 //Z'Zon @221 Attorney Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED STATES MILON H. BORZIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS CONTAINER Application filed March 19, 1928. Serial No. 262,958.
The present invention relates to an improvement in permutation locks, and has for its object to provide a lock adapted for use with containers, safes and the like and which may be operated with facility by one knowing the combination of the same.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a lock of this nature which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive in its manufacture, strong and durable, thoroughly efficient and reliable, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel safe having its peculiarly formed compartment for the permutation locked parts and having a novel lid for being locked by said permutation lock.
\Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in cer tain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a safe em- -.o bodying the features of my invention,
Figure 2 is a. vertical longitudinal section therethrough,
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section therethrough taken substantially on the line 5 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a front end elevation thereof,
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the cover fragmentarily and in open position,
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the cover,
Figure 7 is a disassen'ibled view of the tumbler disk,
Figure 8 is a plan view of one of the washers, and
Figure 9 is an elevation of the spring.
Referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the safe illustrated herein is in the form of a container having a bot tom 5, side walls 6 arising therefrom, a rear end wall 7 rising therefrom provided on its upper edge at its center with an inwardly directed ear Shaving a headed pin 9 rising therefrom. A front wall 10 rises from the front end of the bottom 5 and. is formed with an inward extension 11 at its upper end, in parallelism with the bottom band in turn merging into a downwardly extending partition 12 disposed in parallelism with the front wall 10. This; partition. 12 is formed with an opening 14 adjacent its upper end. 1
A-cover 15 is provided on one end upon its bottom surface with a plate '16 having an elongated longitudinal slot 17 for receiving the pin 9 as is clearly indicated 00 in Figure 2 so that the lid may be slid rearwardly and then swung outwardly to an open position as is indicated to advantage in Figure 5. The free end of this cover or lid 15 is provided with a bolt 18 projecting therefromand provided with three transverse notches 19;
A shaft 20 is journaled through an opening in the front wall 10' and has a knob 21 on its outer forward end, said knob being provided with a flange 22 with suitable combination indicating indicia thereon. A sleeve 23 is fixed in an opening provided in the partition 12 and extendsv forwardly to terminate in spaced :relation to the wall 10 and on said forward end is provided with an outwardly directed annular flange 24. A tumbler disk 25 is fixed to the shaft 20 and has a rearwardly extending projection on its rear face as indicated at 20.
A tumbler disk 27 is rotatable on the sleeve 26 and has arforwardly extending projection 28 on its forward face and a rearwardly directed projection 29 on its so rear face. A tumbler disk is provided with a forwardly directed projection 31. All of these projections are equally spaced from the common axis of the tumbler disk. All the tumbler disks are provided with peripheral notches 32 through which the bolt 18 extends when being inserted through the opening 14 or withdrawn therefrom.
The disks are arranged so that their peripheries are rotatable in the notches 19 of the bolt 18 When the bolt 18 is locked. A washer 33 is disposed between disks 2? and 30. A spring 34 is .disposed .about the sleeve 23 and impinges against the disk 30 and the partition 12. V
\Vhen the bolt 18 is in a locked position that is when one or more of the peripheries of the disk have portions disposed in the notches 19 it will be seen :that by rotating the knob 21 in one direction the projection 26 will pick up the projection 28 and rotate the disk 27 so that the projection 1,29 will pick up the projection :31 and thus by one knowing :the combination :the disk .30 may be located with notch in registration with the 7 opening 14. Then the "knob 21 may :be
rotated in the opposite direction ,until the projection 26 again picks .up the projection 28 so that the disk 2.7 may be left \with its notch in registration with the opening n and then the knob 21 may ;be rotated in said one direction to .place' the disk 25 with "its notch in registration :with the opening M.
WVhen the tumbler disks are thus positioned-the cover .15 may be slid rearW-ardly by the pin and slot'connection 9,17 and :then the lid may be swungout to one side.
It is thought thatthe construction, operation and utility and advantages .of :this invention will now .be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features .of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. It will :be apparent that changes in .the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may :be resorted to without departing from the spiritor scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A container of the class described comprising a bottom, side walls rising from the bottom, a rear Wall rising from the bottom and having an inwardly directed ear at its upper edge parallel with the bottom, a pin rising from said :ear,a front wall rising from the bottom and having an inwardly and rearwardly directed wa l l extension parallel -.\\ltl1 -.tll-(2 bottom and merging into MILON H. ,BQRZIN.
