Description

June 17, 1930. R. H. THRASHER PRiMINe DEVICE Filed Aug. 22, 1928 0 ATTORNEY? Patented June 17, 1930 PATENT FFICE RAY H. THRASHEB, F FERNDALE, MICHIGAN PRIMING DEVICE Application filed. August 22, 1928.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a priming operating mechanism and has for its object the provision of a device whereby the priming of a gasoline engine may be effected by operating the ordinary accelerator.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of a mechanism for operating the throttle of a gas engine and so connecting to the choke that upon an operation of the throttle to fully opened position the choke will be operated to effect a priming of the engine.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this kind which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture and highly efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the invention applied.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a link used in the invention.
Fig. 3 is a view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
The invention is illustrated as applied to a carburetor of a gasoline engine, having a throttle valve mounted on the shaft 7 and operated by the arm 9. An engagement lug 10 serves to engage the adjusting screw 11.
An abutment block 12 limits the movement of the throttle to open position upon a pressing forwardly of the rod 13. A choke valve is fixedly mounted on the shaft 14 and operated through the connections with the rod 15 and the link 16, the spring 17 serving normally to retain the choke valve in closed position. The link 16 is pivotally connected at one end to the arm 9 and the rod 13 is connected pivotally to the link 16 intermediate the ends thereof.
The operation is such that when the accelerator is used for operating the throttle the arms 9 and 9 will rock to move the Serial No. 301,287.
throttle valve to open or closed position and the bellcrank 14: will not be disturbed. When the arm 9 engages the engagement block 12 a further thrusting movement on the rod 13 will cause the bellcrank 14 to rock because of the movement in the link 16 into the various positions shown in dotted line 51, thus choking the engine and effecting priming. In this way I have provided a mechanism whereby the priming of the engine may be effected by the accelerator, thus eliminating the secondary control rod which is customarily used for operating the choke valve.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with an internal combustion engine having a throttle control valve; a choke valve; an arm for operating each of said valves; and an abutment for limiting the operation of said throttle control valve; a link pivotally connected at one end to the throttle control valve operating arm; a rod connecting the opposite end of said link to the choke valve operating arm; and an actuating rod pivotally connected to said link intermediate its ends.
2. In combination with an internal combustion engine having a throttle control valve, a choke valve and a separate arm for operating each of said valves; means connecting to the throttle control valve arm for effecting operation of said throttle control valve upon movement through a predetermined distance; and means connecting said connecting means to the choke valve operating arm for operating said choke valve subsequent to the operation of said. control valve beyond a predetermined distance.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
RAY H. THRASHER.
