GARBAGE RECEPTACLE Application filed November 3, 1927. Serial No. 230,825.

This invention relates to receptacles and in particular to one adapted for use in the collecting of garbage or other similar refuse.

A particular object of the invention is to provide a garbage receptacle or can which is provided with a refill which, in itself, is adapted to receive and hold the garbage so that it can be removed at will and may be discarded with the garbage therein.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a box which is made up to have its own removable refill of specially designed paper which has been impregnated with a suitable disinfectant which will offset the odor of the garbage and to provide a means whereby the garbage will be encased within a double wall so that any odor emitting therefrom cannot escape to the outer atmosphere.

A still further particular object of the invention is to eliminate the necessity of getting the hands soiled or smelly from the handling of the garbage by providing in a garbage pail, a removable refill having a cover thereon which can be disposed of without removing the garbage therefrom.

To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, a drawing depicting a preferred form has been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawing, similar reference characters denote coras responding parts throughout all the views,

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved garbage container or can, the lid thereof being open to disclose the position of the inner receptacle therein, the same being arranged to receive the garbage or other refuse. V

Figure 2 is a view of the garbage container illustrated in Figure 1. the cover g thereof being closed to illustrate how a suitable slot is arranged in the cover of the can in position to receive a tongue on the lid of the inner receptacle whereby both covers may be manipulated simultaneously. Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section of the upper portion of the container and refill indicating the spring catch and construction of the hinged portion of the lid of the container and also the upper end of the refill member.

Figure 4 is a slightly modified form of my invention, the same being illustrated in perspective and showing the use of alocking bar which constitutes a handle, this form being particularly adapted for use where it is desired to move the garbage container from place to place.

Figure 5 is a fragmentary view in cross sectional elevation showing the construction of the outer receptacle and the locking bar used in connection therewith.

Figure 6 is a view in sectional elevation showing a modified form of cover and lid connecting means.

Referring to the drawings in detail 5 indicates a can or box of metal or other substantial construction having a curved front 6 upon which is secured a suitable handle 7, there being provided adjacent the top edge of the front 6, a-slot 8 through which is adapted to pass a catch 9 which is riveted or otherwise secured at the front edge of a cover 10. This cover is hinged as at 11 to the can 5 and is normally urged to its open position through the medium of suitable springs 12 secured about the hinge bar thereof and having their ends disposed against. the cover and against the rear wall of the can 5. The edges of the cover 10 and can 5 may be reinforced by a beading 13 so that the edges thereof are materially reinforced and the can will thus be prevented from losing its shape through rough usage.

In order to keep the cover 10 closed, I have riveted as at 14 to the under side of the front 6, a spring keeper 15, the same being provided with a suitable finger piece 16 which projects through an opening 17 in the front 6, the upper end of the spring keeper being disposed beneath and ad acent to the slot 8 so that when the catch 9 carried by the cover projects through said slot 8, it will be automatically imprisoned by the action of the spring keeper 15, the upper end of which is curved and arranged to fit about the hooked end of the catch 9. The cover is further provided with a slot 18 adjacent the front edge thereof which is adapted to receive a tongue 19, this tongue being struck out of the;.material of the lid 20 of an inner refill or inner receptacle 21. The lid. 20 is formed as an integral part of the refill member 21 which is adapted to receive the garbage or other refuse/and being made of paper, can be disposed of with the garbage, thus eliminatin any necessity on the part of the housewi e to handle the garbage or clean the garbage can. I

In order that access may be had to the inner refill, it is only necessary to press the finger piece 16 to release the catch member 9 and. the cover 10 will be forced to open position by the spring 12 and will carry with it the inner lid 20 by reason of the fact that the tongue 19 engages the cover 10. It is quite evident that an arrangement of this character will effectively seal the garbage container due to the fact that two covers are used and two separate containers are employed, one within another, thus imprisoning odors within the container.

Attention is directed to the fact that any cheap substance such as a paper may be employed in the making of the inner receptacle 21, the same being chenncally treated with a disinfectant whereby it will reduce the garbage odors to a minimum The object of curving the "front of the can 5 is to allow the garbage can to fit within the wall pocket now used in apartment dwellings, the covers to which are bulged and in using a garbage can having acurved front, a maximum size container can be employed which will fit into the compartment in the kitchen wall, which is usually disposed beneath the window and is open to outside atmosphere. No handle need be employed for carrying the can 5 about and hence, the use of the handle 7 on the front is simply to draw the can out of the compartment in the wall at which time the finger piece 16 may be depressed to automatically open the cover 10 so that garbage may be deposited into the inner receptacle 21.

As a modified form of my invention I have employed substantially all of the features above described and illustrated in Figures 1, 2, and 3 of my drawing, the only difi'erence being as illustrated in Figures 4.

and 5 is the use of a locking bar which extends transversely across the can 5 and is designated by the numeral 22. This looking bar is pivoted to one side 23 of the can 5 as at 24 and extends across and rests upon the cover 10 of the can, its opposite end being turned down to provide a catch 25 which engages a suitable spring keeper 26 pivoted as .at 27 to the opposite side 28 of the can 5. In this instance also the lid 10 is provided with a slot 29 which is adapted to receive a tongue 30 struck out of the lid 31 of the inner receptacle 32. In this modified form also, the lid 10 is normally urged open by the springs 33 but is prevented from opening by reason of the locking rod 22, the locking rod being spaced at its center from the cover 10 as at 34 to provide a handle whereby the can can be transported, for instance from a porch to the edge of the street during the garbage collection. When it is desired to place garbage in the inner container 32, the handle 34 may be drawn upon until the end thereof disengages the latch 26 at which time the springs 33 will force the cover 10 up and the cover will carry the inner cover 31 with it so that access may be had to the inner container.

As shown in Figure 6, I may employ a staple 35 on the underside of the cover 36 of the can 5 in which is held the spring clip 37 which releasably holds the edge of the inner receptacle lid 38.

It is evident, therefore, that I have provided a garbage receptacle which can have a removable refill of specially designed paper containing disinfectant which will prevent odors and which may be disposed of with the garbage.

It is evident, also that I have provided an outer container, the cover of which is adapted to cooperate with the cover of the refill to open the same when said outer cover opens whereby the necessity of. using the hands in'close proximity to the contents of the inner container is eliminated and also, I have provided a garbage container which need not be washed out but in which the inner refill is completely disposed of without the necessity of transferring the contents thereof to a garbage receptacle.

\Vhile I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of themletails of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

A refuse container comprising a can, a slotted cover hinged thereto, an inner rcceptacle, a lid on the receptacle, a tongue on the lid in engagement with the slot in the cover, releasable latching means for normally maintaining the cover and lid in closed position, and a spring for urging the cover and lid to assume an open position when the latching means is released.
