Description
June 17, 1930. w. D1 FERRIS LATCH Filed April 11, 1928 v 117 112,771??? Farr/ Ls movement of the slide in its vertical plane, and causes the disengagement of the latch 11 from the strike piece on the inside of the cabinet. Also, with this construction, a portion of the casing, the portion 14:, acts as a guide for the said reciprocating slide, and prevents rotation of the said slide when the said cam is rotated by the knob.
lVith this construction, as exemplified by the drawings, the entire pivoted-latch and rotary-knob device is a structural unit that can be applied to the door as a unit, and that can be removed without separating any of the parts thereof, and particularly without separating or detaching one section of the casing from the other. All that is necessary, in installing the latch, is to form the opening 29 in the door, for the inner section 4 of the casing, insert the screws 3 and secure the strike piece 25 in place.
It will be understood that the latch can be of any suitable or desired size. .For some purposes, as on cabinets and cupboards the latch device can be much smaller than the one r' shown in the drawings.
Without disclaiming anything, and with I out prejudice to any novelty disclosed, what I engaging within the outer part, having retaining means for holding the inner part in engagement with the interior of the outer part, a rotary knob swiveled only in the outer part and having its inner end provided with a swivel head disposed in the cavity of the outer portion and having a cam-like engaging portion, a latch member pivoted on said inner part and provided with means comprising a reciprocating slide for engaging said portion, said slide being movable back and forth in the plane thereof and having engagement with the latch member, a spring carried by the inner part and engaging said latch member, and a strike piece for engaging said latch member.
2. In a door latch mechanism, the combination of a. mounting unit comprising an outer part and an inner part, the outer part being cup-like on its inner side, the inner part engaging within the outer part, having retaining means for holding the inner part in engagement with the in-' terior of the outer part, a rotary knob swiveled only in the outer part and having its inner end provided with a swivel head disposed in the cavity of the outer portion and having a cam-like engaging portion, a latch member pivoted on said inner part and provided with means comprising a reciprocating slide for engaging said portion, said slide being movable back and forth in the plane thereof and having engagement with the latch member, a spring carried by the inner part and engaging said latch member, and a strike piece for engaging said latch member, said inner part having means forming a guide, and said slide having means for engaging said guide, whereby to insure straight back and forth movement of said slide.
3. In a door latch mechanism, the combination of a mounting unit comprising an outer part and an inner part, the outer part being cup-like on its inner side, the inner part engaging within the outer part, having retaining means for holding the inner part permanently in engagement with the interior of the outer part, said inner part being of sheet metal bent to provide feet that engage the outer part, and also bent to provide fiat parallel walls, a rotary knob swiveled only in the outer nart and having its inner end" provided with a swivel head disposed in the cavity of the outer portion and having a cam-like engaging portion, a latch member pivoted on and between said flat walls of said inner part and provided with means for engaging said portion, a spring carried by the inner part and engaging said latch member, and a strike piece for engaging said latch member.
4:. In latch mechanism, the combination of an outer cup shaped casing section, an inner casing section, means to permanently secure the two sections together, so that the inner section is in permanent engagement with the outer wall of the outer section, precluding separation of the sections before the mechanism is fastened to the door, fastening means permitting removal of said mechanism with said sections inseparable and as a unit from the outer side of the door, a knob swiveled in said outer section, rotatable about an axis extending at right angles to both sections, a latch pivoted on said inner section, and a cam rigid with the inner end of the swiveled portion of said knob, said latch member having means for engaging said cam, the axis of the knob and the axis of the latch member being at right angles to each other.
5. In latch mechanism, the combination of a pivoted latch member, a rotary knob, the axes of the knob and latch member being at right angles to each other, a cam rigid with the knob, a reciprocating slide operated by said cam, means for guiding said slide, the
latch member having operative engagement with the slide, whereby rotating of the knob operates the latch, and spring means for normally and yieldingly maintaining the latch in operative position.
6. In latch mechanism, the combination of an outer cup-shaped casing section, an inner sheet-metal casing section provided with projecting feet, means for securing said feet to the inner surface of the outer section, said inner section having fiat parallel walls spaced a distance apart, a latch member pivoted between said flat Walls, a spring for normally and yieldingly holding said latch member in operative position, a knob swiveled in the outer section, and a cam rigid with the inner end of said knob, said latch member having means for engaging said cam.
7 A structure as specified in claim 6, said inner section having a projection forming a guide, and said means for engaging said cam comprising a reciprocating slide having means for engaging said guide and having also means for engaging said member.
8. A structure as specified in claim 6, said means for securing said feet to said outer section comprising hollow rivets, in combination with screws inserted throughsaid rivets to secure the latch mechanism to a door, said feet being integral with said parallel walls and co-operating with said rivets and screws to support said walls in rigid position in the door.
