HEATING APPARATUS Filed April 28, 1928 V IN VEN TOR.
BY%O6)%ZMA/ Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED "STATES ROY L. MEYERS, OF JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN HEATING ArPARA'rUs Application filed April 28,
This invention relates to improvements in heating apparatuses, and more particularly to a hot water boiler.
t is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a boiler in which a maximum amount of water will be heated by the consumption of a minimum amount of fuel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a boiler in which hot smoke and gases from the combustion chamber are caused to travel back and forth through the fluid chamber prior to their discharge to the chimney, so that water within said chamher is thoroughly heated thereby.
A further object of the invention is to provide a" unitary heating apparatus including a boiler and an economizer utilizing ordinarily wasted heat units.
Afurther cbj ect of the invention is to provide a heating apparatus which is compact,
is neat and attractive in appearance, is eflicient in use, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view, 2 the invention consists of the improved heattions as set forth in the claim, and alents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views :v
Fig. 1 is a side view,.with the outer casing in longitudinal vertical section, of the improved heating apparatus, other portions be ing broken away and shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View thereof taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a front end view of the improved heating apparatus.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, it will appear that the numeral 5 indicates a fire pot, the inner walls of which are preferably lined with bricks. Within said fire pot, on a support 6, is an oil burner all equiv with an extension 8 to permit access to the interior of the same and the burner.
Positioned adjacent the rear wall of the fire pot and mounted on a support 9 is a vertically disposed intermediate drum 10, said of thetubes :19. ing apparatus, and its parts and comblnap of the tubes and drums. 10, 14' and 15, and
external cover 24. f

idrum extendingconsiderably above the fire closed bya metallic horizontal wall12 havin'g near its front portion an opening 13,
and mounted above said openingand in register therewith 1s an upper drum 14.
Spaced from the drum 10 is a large verti- [cally disposed drum 15 elevated by a supo porting member 16. A pluralityrof upper smoke tubes 17 extend at their end portions into the inner wall of the drum 14 and into the upper rear portion of the large drum 15. To connectthe upper portionof the intermediate drum 10 with the intermediate portion of the drum 15, there, are a group of short intermediate smoke tubes 18, and connecting and entering the; lower portions of said drums 10 and 15 are a group of short lower smoke tubes 19. Within the large drum '15 there is a horizontal partition or baflie 20 which separates the openings of the group of tubes 18 from the openings 1 An outer metalliccasing 21 surrounds 'all forms a fluid tight enclosure and container. It'will'also beseen that the casing has a front wall 22 extending downwardly across.,so the front of the fire potland; forming the front wallof the upper chamber 11. The drum 14 has a front tubular eiitension 23 closed by a removable cover 24,fsaid extension permitting access to the drum 14 and tubes l'z for cleaning, and the drum 15 has a similar extension 23 f -provided with an TA short circuiting smoke pipe 25 ter- Ininating at achininey (not shown) eXtei1ds,. 9o
from the'upper portionof the large drum 15 through the rear wall of theouter casing 2 1. YWithin. said smoke 1pipe 25fadjacent the casing 21," a normally closed butterfly damper 26, which will open if'there is ante explosion or. undue pressure from the 001- lection of. gases, to. short circuit the smoke and gases directly 'to the chimney. EX- tended from the lower portion of the drum '15 throughthe casing2l "and communicatloe through the smoke pipes 27 and 25.
ing with an outer portion of the pipe 25 is a curved smoke pipe 27 which conducts the smoke under ordinary circumstances.
A cold water or fluid supply pipe 28 enters the lower portion of the outer casing 21, while one or more hot water conducting pipes 29 extend from the upper portion of said casing, said pipes carrying the heated fluid to radiators (not shown) for heating purposes.
In the operation of the heating apparatus, combustion takes place within the chambers 5 and 11, and the walls of the chamber 11 become very hot. Hot smoke and gases of combustion escape from the chamber 11 into the small drum 1 1 and then circulate through the upper tubes 17 to the drum 15, and then, because of the bafile 20, the circulation is back through the intermediate tubes 18 to the drum 10 from where there is a return to the lower portion of the drum 15 through the tubes 19. By this time, considerable heat has been extracted from'the smoke, and it is discharged to the chimney The entire casing 21 has water circulating therethrough, and the water circulates against and around the hot drums 10, 15 and 1 1, the tubes and the hot walls of the casing 11 being heated by conduction. The water rises as it is heated, being eventually conveyed through the upper pipes 29 to radiators.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the improved heating apparatus is of simple and novel construction, and is well adapted for the purposes set forth.
What I claim as my invention is:
A heating apparatus, comprising an outer casing adapted to contain fluid, said oasing having a main body portion and an upper horizontal extension portion, an enclosed fire pot against the end of the main casing portion, a combustion chamber over the fire pot and below the extension portion of the outer casing, a small upper drum within said extension portion adjacent the combustion chamber, there being a port between said combustion chamber and said drum, a large drum within the opposite end portionof the main body of the casing, an intermediate drum within said casing spaced from the large drum, a plurality of elongated smoke tubes within the upper portion of said casing and connecting the upper drum and the upper portion of the large drum, a plurality of intermediate smoke tubes connecting the upper portion of the intermediate drum with an intermediate portion of the large drum, a plurality of lower smoke tubes connecting the lower portions of the intermediate and large drums, all of said smoke tubes being horizontally disposed, a bafile within the large drum between the openings of the intermediate tubes and the lower tubes, a smoke nature.
