This invention relates to a bag closure and method of making the same, and more particularly toa bag closure employing a metalclip or clips to secure the bag closure. One feature of the invention is the corrugation of the clips along the line where they are bent to prevent the straightening out of the clips after they have been applied to the bag. De=
tails of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,Figure 1 is a view of a top portion of a bag having the top Fig. 7 is a view of Fig. 6 looking at the right side thereof; Fig. 8 is adi'agrammatio plan view of the end of the bag during corrugation; Fig. 9 is a side view of the end of a bag after the closing hand has been applied and corrugated; Fig. 10 is a diagrammatic side elevation illustrating the application of a tape carrying metal clips to the tops of bags; Fig. 11 is a partial planview of Fig. 10; Figs. 12 and 13 are enlarged details of portions of Fig. 11; Fig. 13 isan enlarged detail plan of a portion of the end of a closed bag; Figs. 14, 15 and'16 are diagrammatic sections illustrating successive steps in the 3 application of the tape to a bag; Fig. 17
is a detail plan of a portion of the tape; Fig. 18 is a diagrammatic side elevation showing a modification of the use of a tape'carrying metal clips; Figs. 19 is'a diagrammatic side elegation of the conclusion of the process shown in Fig. 18; Figs.' 20 and 21 are plan views of the construction shown in Figs. 18
and 19, respectively; Figs. 22 to 32, inclusive,
are sections of the construction shown in Figs. 18 to 21, showing the successive steps of the manipulation of the tape and chps and indicating diagrammatically apparatus for performing such manipulation;
is thereby materially increased.
In Figs. 1 to 8, there is shown the application of a metalband to the end of a bag for closing the same. A bag 10 is shown having [the ends of its Walls spread apart to form flanges '11. A metal strip 12 wider than the flanges 11 may be slipped over these flanges,
there being flanges 13 at each side of band 12 turned downward and inward so as to enclose the edges of flanges 11'. This band 12 may be applied with the body portion thereof straight, as shown in Fig. 4, but preferably, it is bent, as shown in Fig. 5. When thus bent, as shown in Fig. 5, the completion of the application may be accomplished very simply by pressing together the two sides of the band, whereby they are bent inward and downward and together, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. In Fig. 7, the thickness of the parts is exaggerated for purposes of. illustration. The-band 12 is shown to be bentv along lines 15 and 16 leaving a comparatively flat top;
Whether this would be true in the actual construction or not would depend upon the thickness of the walls of the bag, the thickness by any suitable means, not shown. The result of this operation is to produce corrugations 23 in the band 12. Thesecorrugations are continued to the top of the band so that the top forms a wavy line and the force necessary to spread apart the lower edges of the In the construction shown in Figs. 10 to 17, a series of bags 24 are carried on a conveyor 25. A reel 26 of tape is employed. In the construction shown, there is attached a series ofmetal clips 28. This tape is-first run over a pasting'roll 29 running in a suitable pastetank '30. -Preferablyfthe edge of the paste rollis slightly convex anda grooved upon roller 29 so as to curve it into the sha e shown in Fig. 14: The convex-shape oft e tion over the end of the bag, it is run between I band paste roller is advantageous for two reasons,
because it enables the initialbending of the tape, as shown inFig. 14, and also because it picks up the paste on its central portion and by a roller-63 against a roller 64 opposite roller 62, in the manner shown in" Fig. 29.
In the construction shown, the top 66 of applies it to the tape and the pressure spreads another bank ahead of bag 57 is at the same this paste towards the sides ofthe tape, It.
is desirahletohave the paste tl'rorc gu'ghly' ap v plied to the central portion of the tape and not to have it too thick at the edges, because thespre'adi'ng-of the paste beyond the edges of'the tape is undesirable.
After the tape passes from the pasting roller, it is led downwardpnto thetop oi' a bag 24 passing thereunder on 'the'conveyor 25. Blocks 32 are rovided at the sides of the top of the bag and cooperatewith rolle'rs'33 and 34 to bend downwardthe edges of the tape and the ends of clipis Beyond blocks 32, rollers 35 are provi V ed onoppqsite sides of thepath -of the tape and are adapted to bring the sides' of-the tape to final bent position against the walls of thebag. Thereafter, the tape and bag walls are run between corrugatedjrollers 36 which have-'corrugatmg teeth 'sos aced that each clip will be bent transverse y as indicated'in Fig. 13".' The size of the teeth is'such that there is a complete hen'd'ineach clip and, therefore, the resistance to, the spreading. apart of the ends o'fthe clip is materially increased. A,
Figs. 18 to 32, inclusive, illustrate diagrammatically the application of a slightly different, style of tape and clip to a series of bags.' A. tape reel 40 is provided from which there is led'a tape41'carnyin a series oifclips 421' which. extend [to 'a consi erable' distance from one 'side' of the tape. The" tape -is overa support 43 against which it is held by a, series ,of rollers '45, 46 and 47.
