form of pump for the purpose which will permit of direct lubrication, recharging empty receptacles or apparatus with the quantity and quality of lubricant required by the customer, and also varification of this quantity, and thus rendering any fraud impossible.
The object of the invention is a measurer and distributor of variable quantities of viscous materials which allows lubricating or other apparatus to be charged with the quantity and quality required by the user independently of the pressure required for the charging.
If pliant packages containing the material to be distributed are employed, the quality of the viscous material distributed may be changed by removing the package even when partially emptied in which case it can be again used for a later distribution.
The present inventioncomprises a measurer and distributer for viscous materials of the kind having two cylinders of different diameters the ends of which opposite to those through which pass the rods of their respective pistons being provided with means for connecting the cylinders, with the features that the end of the smaller cylinder is provided with a multi-way cock and at least one of the cylinders has a transparent wall. The larger cylinder acts as a lubricant reservoir and has the end opposite to that through which passes the rod of the piston removable for charging the cylinder. This cylinder communicates through its removable end, either directly or by way of a passage system, with a smaller cylinder which acts as a measurer and distributor and is provided at the end opposite that through which the rod of the piston passes with a multi-way cock adapted to connect the smaller cylinder to the larger one or to disconnect it from the larger one when a measured quantity of the viscous material received from the larger cylinder is being distributed, the said larger cylinder receiving any excess of liquid which may be left in the smaller cylinder at the end of the operation or when the quantity to be supplied is to be changed.
At least one of the cylinders has trans parent walls and the smaller cylinder may be calibrated and graduated and its piston carries an indicating pointer or the like preferably situated in that part of the cylinder which is free of the viscous fluid, i. e. on the rod side of the piston, in a well known way, which it is not necessary to illustrate.
The apparatus may be constructed to avoid liquid hammering in the smaller cylinder by making its piston operate in conjunction with an elastic or damping devlce.
In addition to this feature the inside of the removable end of the larger cylinder may be provided with radial and projecting ridges which facilitate the flow of the ma.- terial to be distributed and prevent any obstruction which might otherwise result when the said material is contained in an envelope constructed of a pliant or supple material.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the special claim.
The preferred form of embodiment of the present invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form part of this specification, and in which: 7

As will be seen in the drawing, Figure 1, the distributing pump according to the invention comprises a frame 1 forming the bottoms 2, of the cylinders 4:, 5. The re charging cylinder at has its side wall 6 of glass and its movable top closure 7 carries the outlet pipe 8 for the lubricant terminating in a peripheral gutter 9 communicating by the passage 10 and the right angle bend 11, formed inthe top closure 7, with the interior of the cylinder 4:. The inner face 12 of the top closure 7 is provided with grooves 13 converging towards the centre, for ensuring the flow of lubricant in cases where recharging is effected by a casing in spite of the compression and crushing of the said casing or the premature crushing thereof. ll and 15 are plastic fluid-tight washers between the bottom 2 and top 7 and the wall 6 of the cylinder, and 16 is a plastic fluid-tight washer between the top 7 and the framework 1.
The top 7 is locked on the frame-work 1 in any suitable manner. In the cylinder 4 moves a piston a with a leather cup 17. 18 is a hollow rod which abuts at its upper end against the piston see Fig. 1, above which the leather cup rests, the latter being secured to the rod by a screw fitting into the upper end of the rod. This hollow piston rod passes through the bottom 2 and carries a guide member 19 sliding in a vertical slot 20 in the piston in the cylinder during its axial movement.
Through the guide 19 and into the rod 18 screws an operating rod 21 terminated by a square portion 24 on which may be fitted a handle.
The tube 8 is adapted to be connected bya flexible tube to the supply tube 25 of the cylinder 5 communicating by means of the radial passage 26 and the right angled passage 27 formed in the tap 17 which turns in the cup 28 of the cylinder The cylinder 5 which is of smaller diameter than the cylinder e.- is formed by a wall 29 of glass which may be graduated in the usual way and two ends 3 and 28 with plastic fluid- tight washers 30 and 31.
In the cylinder 5 moves a piston 32 with leather cup 33, a hollow piston rod 3% passin g through the bottom 37 is a rod extended into the hollow rod 34, said rod being terminated by a square end i0 which extends beyond the frame 1. This arrangement is provided in the case where it desired to actuate the piston directly, but it may be omitted and in this case the rod 3% will be plain and does extend beyond the framework 1.
The rod 37 threaded as at 14-1 to engage in the threaded opening in the plate l) as seen in Fig. 1.
i2 is a plate on the rod 37 and 36 is a plate on the rod 84-. Between these plates is a cushioned spring 4:4, see Fig. 1 surrounding the rod 37.
The tap 1" is operated by the handle 47, Fig. 1, and may have any number of ways, only one being shown, but the number of ways may vary.
A spring 4:? around the stem of the tap 17 tends to keep the body of the top forced outward.
These ways are arranged to receive flexible tubes (not shown) of which the free ends may be provided with any suitable fitting or devices permitting of the lubrication of the members or the recharging of empty lubricating apparatus under pressure or otherwise. Suitable means may be provided for the purpose of enabling the quantity of oil distributed to be measured.
In use, the supply tank 4: and the cylinder 5 are to be connected by means of a flexible hose, the function of the piston in the tank 4; being to put the contents therein under pressure required to force a quantity of the liquid into the discharge cylinder through the inlets 26 and 27, which forces the piston 32 downward against the resistance of the spring la. The valve 47 is then turned to cut off the supply from the discharge tank or cylinder l, wl'iereupon the predetermined charge in the cylinder 5 is forcibly ejected by the resultant action of the compressed spring diet.
The quantity of oil is observed through the transparency of the glass walls 6 and 25).
It will be understood that the wall 6 may also be of metal without departing from the scope of the invention.

A device of the character described comprising two cylinders of different capacity, side by side, a frame forming the bottoms of said cylinders, said cylinders having each a piston therein, a hollow rod in each cylinder cooperable with the pistons, a plate having screw engagement with the rod of the smaller cylinder with an interposed spring, and a plate on the other rod, rods with guides for said plates, means for charging. the larger cylinder, means for putting the contents of the larger cylinder under pressure, means for connecting the two cylinders, the piston in the smaller cylinder being depressible downward against the resistance of said spring.
