CORPORATION OF DELAWARE ELEGTRICALLY-OPEBATED BARBER POLE Application filed December 24, 1928. Serial Nu. 32s,224.
This invention relates to barber poles of the type that comprise a rotatable cylinder provided with conventional barber pole stripes.
The-main object of our invention is to provide an electrically-operated barber poleof the general type mentioned, that is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and of such construction that there is little liability of the operating mechanism for the ro tatable striped member. failing to operate properly when thepole is in use.
To this end we have devised a barber' pole that comprises arotatable striped member, a driving means for said member, and an electric induction motor of the disk type for actuating said driving means.
Figure 1 of the drawings, is a side elevational view of our improved barber pole.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional View of said pole. s
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View, taken on the line 33 of Figure 2. s
Figure 4: is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of our pole, illustrating another.
type of driving means that may be used; and Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4:.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, which illustrate the preferredeform of our invention, A designates a rotatable cylindrical member provided with conventional barber pole stripes, B designatesa transpan ent casing for said member, formed pref erably from a glass cylinder, and C designates top and bottomsupporting brackets which are preferably provided with annularshaped portions or collars that receive the upper and lower end portions of the glass cylinder B. s p
The operating mechanism for the striped member A is composed of an electric induction motor of the disk type, and a friction driving means for transmitting rotary motion from the disk of said motor to the screws 1 or in any other suitable way tothe bottom supporting bracket C, as shown in Figure 2. The coil w of said motor is ar ranged horizontally and the disk 3 of said motor is arranged vertically. The driving means comprises a horizontally-disposed shaft 2 connected to the disk 3/ of the motor, and a disk-shaped friction-driving device 3 fastened to said shaft 2 and arranged to act uponthe member A, preferably the bottom of a said member. When the coil w of the motor is energized, the disk'y of the motor revolves, and thus causes rotary movement to.
be imparted to the member A, ,due tothe 3 exerts on the bottom of the member A, said said member to remain in frictional contact frictional pressure which the driving device with'the driving device 3. The member A 7 is centered and maintained in operative relationship with the driving device 3 by a stationary centering pin t carried by the supporting frame D and arranged so that it will project upwardly into a hole in the bottom of the rotatable member A.
In orderthat the pole may operate proper- .ly for a long period without requiring attention, we have equipped it with a lubricatmg means,wh1ch, after being filled with oil or some other suitable lubricating medium,
willkeep the bearings of the drive shaft 2- in properly lubricated condition. Said lubrlcating means comprises pockets or reservoirs 5 containing a lubricating, medium, ar-
cant'to the pockets 5. In the form of our invention herein shown the pockets 5 are filled with oil soaked waste, and the oil supply conduit comprises a branched or yoke-shaped portion that leads to both of said pockets and a vertically-disposed portion 6 whose upper end terminates in the top face of the bottom supporting bracket C, as shown more clearly in FigureB, thereby enabling the supply of oil for the lubricating means to be easily replenishedr Y Due to the fact that the operating-means I accessible from the exterior of the pole for supplylng oil or some other suitable lubrifor the rotatable striped member A is combined with the frame D to form a unit that can be easily connected with or detached from the bottom supporting bracket C, the parts of the pole can be easily assembled and disassembled, it being preferable to provide the frame D with an insulating block 7 that carries binding posts 8 to which are connected wires 9 that lead to the coil w of the motor and supply wires 9 that lead outwardly through a tubular portion 10 of the bottom supporting bracket C. When the parts of the pole are assembled, as shown in Figure 2, the centering pin 4 carried by the frame D, holds the rotatable member A in concentric relationship with the glass cylinder B that surrounds said member, and the weight of said member A holds the bottom or lower end of said member in frictional contact with the driving device 3 that impartsrotary movement to said member.
In order that the speedof rotation of the member A may be changed easily, we combine the driving device 3 with the drive shaft 2 in such a way that said driving device can be arranged in difierent positions along l the length of said drive shaft, nearer to or farther away from the longitudinal axis of the member A, as shown in broken lines in Figure 2.
Instead of using a friction driving means 1 for. transmitting motion to the rotatable striped member A of the pole from the disk of the electric motor, we may use a driving means of the gear type, such as is shown in Figures 4 and 5. In this form of our invention the disk 1 of the electric motor is arranged horizontally and connected to a vertically-disposed drive shaft 2 that is pro vided at its upper end with a pinion 11 which meshes with a gear 12 fastened to a stub shaft 13' that is attached to the bottom of the r0.- tatable member A at a point in alignment with the longitudinal axis of said member. In other respects the barber pole shown in F igures 4 and5 is the same as the barber pole shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, and comprises corresponding parts arranged in a similar manner. In the pole shown in Figures 1 and 5 the lubricatingmeans comprises an additional pocket 53 for holding a lubricat- 3 ing medium, arranged so that it will keep the bearing of the stub shaft 12 properly lubricated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secureby Letters'Patent is:
1. A barber pole provided with a vertically-disposed rotatable striped member, a housing for said member comprisinga'bottom supporting bracket, an electric induction motor of-the disk type, a drive shaft connected to the disk of said motor, a driving means for transmitting rotary motion to said rotatable member from said drive shaft, a
supporting frame for said motor, drive shaft, 7
and driving means that is detachably connected to said supporting bracket, and a lubricating means combined with said frame and capable of being replenished from the exterior of the pole for keeping said drive shaft in a lubricated condition.
2. A barber pole provided with a vertically-disposed striped member, transparent housing or casing surrounding said member, top and bottom supporting brackets com bined with said transparent housing, a frame detachably connected to the bottom supporting bracket, and an electrically-actuated operating mechanism for said rotatable member combined with said frame to form a complete unit that can be easily removed from said bottom bracket.
3. A barber pole provided with a vertically-disposed rotatable striped member, an electric induction motor of the disk type arranged at the lower end of said member, a drive shaft connected with the disk of said motor, and a friction driving device on said shaft that is maintained in frictional engagement with said rotatable member by the weight of said member.
4. A barber pole provided with a rotatable striped member, a housing for said member comprising a bottom supporting bracket, an electric induction motor of the disk type, a sustaining frame for said motor detachably connected to said bottom bracket, a drive shaft journaled in said'frame and connected with the disk of said motor, and a friction driving device on said shaft arranged so that the weight of said rotatable member will cause the bottom of said member to remain in frictional engagement with said driving device. a
5. A barber pole provided with a vertically-disposed rotatable striped member, a housing for said member comprising a supporting bracket arranged at the lower end of said member, a frame detachably connected to said bracket, a centering pin on said frame that is adapted to enter a hole in the bottom of said rotatable member and hold said member centered with relation to said housing, an electric induction motor of the disk type combined with said frame'to form a unit that can be easily removed from said bracket, and a friction driving means operated by the disk of said motor and held in frictional engagement with said striped member by the weight of said member.
