Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,264, dated April 18, 1876 application filed October 6, 1875.

' ing of fibrous material for supporting the walls of the tube and keeping them distended, as will hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a stuffing box with my invention applied; and Fig. 2, a similar view of the' same, together with a piston or other rod, as working through the stuffing-box.
The letter A represents the bod; of the stuffing-box, and B its gland, both of which may be of the ordinary or any suitable construction. 0 is a rod, which works through said stuffing-box. D represents the unbroken tube, of soft or flexible metal, such as lead or -other similar material, and which is bent into the form of a spiral coil, for lodgment within the stufiing-box andaround the rod passing through the same. This tube may either be open or closed at its ends, and forms both a close and easy packing. Within this tube is arranged a filling of material, I), such as cotton or other fibrous material, which has for its object to support the walls of the tube and preventing its collapsing, without impairing its flexibility.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a packingot' an unbroken tube of soft metal, such bein g shown in Patent No. 6,974, in which the 'tubeis distended with compressed air. The advantage of my invention over the above patent is that, when the tube is worn through, thefibrous filling becomes-available for packing purposes.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A packing for stuffing-boxes, consisting of an unbroken tube of soft metal, in combination with a fibrous filling for, supporting its walls and keeping them distended, substantially as described.
