An apron is hingedly'connected, as shown at 26, to one of the supporting bars 28 for the platform 31 of'theplow. This apron may be made of sheet-metal of suitable gauge, and its sides 23 are turned down to close the openings which would otherwise be present at the ends of the apron,fand into which coal might, and probably would be forced by the conveyor. 1 By reason'of the fact that the apron 25 is hingedly connected to the plow, said apron will be caused to rest. at all times upon the conveyor belt, its flexible connection with the plow causing the apron tofollow irregularities and inequalities of the belt as the plow and apron are moved relatively to said belt.

The other cable 33 may be led directly rearwardly along the conveyor frameand fastened to another cleat 10, as herein shown. It'will be seen from the construction described that in the operation of loading the cars-18,19, 20 and 21, the coal is conveyed by the pit car loader 6 anddeposited upon the conveyor belt2, and carried by said belt along and over the several cars located below the conveyor. The plow which rests freely upon the conveyor frame, is capable of such movement along the frame and coal to be deflected laterally from the conveyor, and loaded successively onto the several cars according to the location of the plow.
In the operation of loading cars it will be evident that the operator will first start with the plow over the car 18, and as the coal is carried by the conveyor to the plow, the latter will intercept the coal and deflect it laterally, so that .the coal will fall off of the conveyor belt at the two sides of said belt, and by move ment of the plow forward will be gradually caused to pile up in the car, the distribution of thecoa-l during the loading operation be ing controllable by the operator in the movement of the plow. This operation will be repeatedsuccessively over the remaining cars as 19, 20 and 21 until the last car in the train has been loaded. During the loading operation theapron 5 will rest lightly upon the belt of theconveyor and will cause all of the coal including the smaller particles thereof to be picked up and caused to travel along the apron andthe forwardportion of the platform 31 to the plow 30, theflexible connection of the apron with the plow permitting the apron to-lie closely tothe surfaceofthe belt, so thatnone of the coal will be carried under the plow so as to interfere with its free movements or cause wedging of the coal between the belt and plow. The weight of the coal that lies onthe plow frame or platform has been found-inpractice to hold the plow on the conveyor. The large lumps of coal or other material being conveyed are cushioned by the fine coal that builds up on the plow, thereby preventing such. large lumps from striking the plow a heavy blow to injure or displace the same;

I claim I i '1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a conveyor for granular material, of a plow movable over said conveyor, said plow having at its leading end an apron movably connected therewith and adapted to extend to. the surface of and rest upon said conveyor.
2. An apparatus of the class described comprising a conveyor for granular ma terial, a plow located overand movable along said conveyor and having a platform, and a movable apron pivotally connected with said platform and arranged to extend therefrom to the surface of the conveyor.
