Description

Mm 3, 119m DEGENER mm az ADDING ATTACHMENT FOR 'IYPEWRITING MACHINES Original Filed June 10, 1926 Patented June 3, 1930 GUSTAVE O. DEGENER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO ROYAL TYPE- WRITER COMPANY, INC., OENEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK ADDIN G ATTACHMENT FOB TYPEWRITING: MACHINES Original application filed June 10, 1926, Serial No. 114,950. Divided and this application filed May 25,
1927. Serial N0. 194,134.
This application is a division of my prior application Serial No. 114,950 filed June 10, 1926 (now Patent No. 1,688,805, granted Oct. 23, 1928).
' The object of this invention is to provide means located adjacent the keyboard of the typewriting machine for operating the add and subtract lever of computing mechanism which is constructed as an attachment to the typewriting machine and is placed at one side thereof.- This obviates the necessity of removing the hand from the keyboard of the ty e'writer in order to operate the add and su tract lever.
The invention is applicable to computing mechanisms of Widely different types and the computing mechanism itself is not disclosed in detail. It may be of the same general character as that shown in myprior application Serial No. 736,896 filed Sept. 10, 1924 (now Patent No. 1,633,242, granted June 21,
The invention is disclosed as embodled in a construction wherein the return movement of the typewriter carriage after it has been positioned for computing in the grand total-- izer automatically returns the add and subbeen set tosubtract. It is obvious, however,
that the invention is applicable to other types of mechanism.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attachment in position upon a typewriting machine conventionally illustrated. I Figure 2 is a detached view showing the train of connections from the add and subtract lever at the left hand side of the key board to the add and subtract lever of the totalizer and the carriage operated means for returning the same to add position.
and a keyboard F provided with numeral keys be of any desired construction.
The adding. mechanism is enclosed in a casing I. at the right hand side of .the typewriting machine and contains computing mechanism which may be set to add or subtract by the movement of a short lever 82 to one or the other of two positions. This lever is connected by a short link 83 to an upstanding arm 84 of a three armed lever which is pivoted at 85 to an appropriate support. Onearm 86 of this lever is connected by a link 87 to an arm 88 extending rearwardly from one end of a rock shaft 89, which underlies the keyboard of the typewriting machine. The other end of this rock shaft has an arm 90 connected by an upstanding link 91 to an arm 92 of a bell crank lever pivoted at 93, the other arm of which lever is bent to form a finger piece and indicator 94 which coacts with an indicating device 95 on a bracket 96 secured to the side frame of the machine. A movement of the finger piece 94: from one position to the other will, therefore, shift the mechanism as desired for addition or subtraction.
The other arm 97 of the three armed lever is connected by a spring 98 which engages a plunger 99 with one arm 100 of a bell crank lever which is pivoted at 101 to an appropriate support and has an upwardly and rearwardly extending arm 102 terminatin in an offset 103. A shaft 104 at the rear 0 the computing mechanism carries a cam member 105 which is actuated by a pin 106 on the carriage an'dclearly set forth in my Patent No. 1,624,318 of April 12, 1927. When this shaft is rotated on the return movement of the lever to subtract without removing her hand from the keyboard.
It will be obvious that the precise embodiment of the invention may be varied in accordance with the type of mechanism to which it is applied and that other detail changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended g claims.
' I claim as my invention:
1. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of an adding and subtracting computing device, a movable carriage for the typewriter, manual means to cause the computing device to add or subtract, and means actuated by a shifting of the carriage to actuate the manual means to restore the computin device to adding condition 9, when during t' e preceding operation it shall have been caused to subtract.

as able carriage for the typewriter, a manually I adjustable device to cause the computing device to add or subtract, a cam actuated by the carriage, and means actuated by the cam for shifting the manually adjustable device-to restore the computing device to adding condition if during the previous operation it shall have been caused to subtract. v 3. In a combined writing and computing machine, the combination of an adding and subtracting totalizer, a movable carriage for the writing machine, a cam mounted in the path of the carriage and actuated thereby, means including a lever for causing the totalizer to add or subtract according to the will of the operator, and means actuated by the cam for shifting the lever to change the totalizer to adding condition if during a previous operation it shall have been caused to subtract.
4. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of an adding and subtracting computing device, normally arranged for a preferred computation, a movable carriage for the typewriter, means under the control of the operator to cause the computing device to add or subtract, and means actuated by a shifting of the carriage to restore the computing device so that it may receive its preferred computation if during the precedingooperation it shall have been caused to per rm the operation which is not preferred. 5. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, the combination of a computing device adapted to perform various computations, means for vcausing the computing device to normally perform a preferred computation, means under the control of the operator for causing the computing device to perform a desired computation, and means gov-
