UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
PETER S. HALDEMAN, OF SMITHFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
I M PROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,973, dated April 11, 1876; application filed -February 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER S. HALDEMAN, of Smithfield, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jar-(looplings and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a car-coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my carcoupling. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
My car-coupling is composed of only two pieces at each end of the car. A metal bar is bent in the center to form an eye or loop, A, with two parallel arms, B B, extending rearward, and the rear ends of said arms bent outward at right angles, and fastened by strong bolts to the timbers of the cars. The eye A is beveled at the front from the lower edge upward and rearward, said bevel diminishing gradually toward both sides, until at the rear,
where the arms B commence, the iron is perfectly vertical. Between the two arms B B is pivoted the elongated hook O, which extends a suitable distance in front of the eye A, and the hook part of which is beveled nearly on the same angle as the eye in which it is to be hooked. On the front end of the hook O is attached a cross-bar, D, extending on both sides thereof. When two cars are brought together the hooks O 0 pass each other and fasten into the opposing eyes A A, and the cross-bars D D hold the hooks down into the eyes, as said cross-bars overlap the adjoining hooks. As long as the cars remain on the track the coupling is perfectly secure, but should either car jump the track or turn over the coupling disengages itself instantly.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the cross-bars D D, hooks O G, and beveled eyes A A, with their arms B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
