Application filed Apt-n 2a,
This invention relates to an abrading tool and is particularly adaptable for honing piston pin holes and cylinders of internal combustion engines.
An object. of the invention'is to provide, a tool which is adapted to be attached to a rotating source of power and projected into the opening tobe smoothed or may be fixed in a vise and the work rotated thereabout.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide for a rigid abrading surface that permits convenient arrangement of a detachable abrading seat so that the same may bereplaceable while at the same time modifying the parts so as to preventcutting of the abrading sheet. F Other objects of the invention, areto provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a tool of the character referred to, which is strong, compact and durable, very simple in its methodof assembly, convenient to operate, formed of simplified thoroughly reliable in its operation and C0111- paratively inexpensive to manufacture and operate.
With the foregoing and'other objects .in view, the inventionconsists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts. as will be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations andmodifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the claims hereunto appended. 1
In the drawings wherein likereference characters denote corresponding p art s throughout the several views; I
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section of the device in accordance with this'invention,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of thesleeve thereof, and v 4 Figure 3 is a fragmentary diametric sec-' tional view of a portion thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 ill-- die-ates an elongated mandrel cylindrical in cross section having reducedv peripherally threaded portions 6, 7 at its opposite ends,
parts, which is are supported on the threaded face 1929. Serial No. $57,485.
while the one threaded portion 7 merges into a shank 8 having a square shoulder9 011 the w free extremity thereof. The shoulder 9 is recited as being square, it may be of anycontour depending upon the'configuration of the grippin member to which the tool is adapted to be applied. v
A pair of sockets 10, 11 are countersunk in the periphery of the mandrel '5, extends axiall thereof and are disposed at an angle wit 1 respect to the diameter of said mandrel. A pair of U-shaped resilient inetallic clips 12'. 13 are adapted to be anchored in the sockets 10, 11 and held tion of the resilient legs of the clip pressing outwardly against the walls of the socket.
The friction of the legs however are not enough to prevent the movement of theclip, when it is desired to remove them for the purposes to be presently referredto.
A substantially rigi split, tubular sleeve circuinposed about and supported on the mandrel 5. The length of the SlGGW-B 14 however is slightly greaterthan the length of mandrel 5 to form an abutment engageable with the fastening devices and to be prese1'1t-.
ly referred to. The slot 1 axially disposed and and is disposed at the of'sockcts 10.11.
5 on the sleeve-is is of the same width, same angle'as the pair therein by the fric Referring to Figure 3 of the drawings, this mandrel rotates in a clockwise direction and the leading corners of the slot 15 are rounded as at 16 to prevent cutting the abrading sheets, to be presently mentioned, by abutment with external objects. The walls of the sleeve 14 taper gently from the inner end 17 to the outer end 18 so that particular spots may be smoothed without exerting pressure on the entire opening being honed.
A'pair of nuts .19, 2O threadably engage and at the opposite ends of the mandrel and the inner faces of the nuts are brought into dc- Asheet of abrading cloth 21 of the length of the sleeve 14 is trained over the outer surportions .6. 7
thereof.- The free ends of the sheet are press or any threaded through the slot 15 of the sleeve and secured between the resilient legs of the U-fshaped clips 12, 13, whereupon the abrading cloth 21 is' demountably circumposed about the sleeve 14. The clips 12, 13 may be removed from the sockets 1Q, 11 when the ends of the abrading sheet 21 are-inserted therein and after which the clips 10,, 11 may then be inserted in the socket-s .of the mandrel 5.
It is pointed out that it is within the contemplation of the invention to utilize any shouder 9 may be secured in a vise ]aw in ferred to comprising a solid cylindrical.
fixed relation whereupon the rotation of the work about the sleeve will smooth the surface to be honed or dressed to the desired degree of smoothness.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. An abrading tool of the character re-,
mandrel having reduced threaded portions at its opposite ends, the threaded portion at one end merging with a shank, the shank having means at its outer end of angular contour and adapted to be gripped by an extra-' neous object to rigidly secure said mandrel f thereto, said mandrel formed with a 40 .axially thereof, a pair of resilient I drel, said air of circumferentially spaced sockets exten ing clips frictionally'supported in said sockets, an axially slotted. tubular sleeve mounted on the man slot registering with said pair of sockets, a sheet of-abrading material C11- cumposed on said sleeve and having the side edges thereof trained through said slot and anchored'in said clips,a pair of nuts mounted on the threaded portions of said mandrel in abutment with the ends of said sleeve for securing said sleeve to said mandrel.
2. An abradingtool of the craracter referred to comprising. a solid cylindircal' tour and-adapted circumferentially spaced sockets mandrel having reduced threaded portions at-its o posite ends, the-threaded portion at one .en merging with a shank, the shank means at its outer end of angular conto be gripped by an extraidly secure saidmandrel rel formed with a pair of extending axiall thereof, a pair of resilient clips friction'a; y supported in'said sockets, an axially Qhttediubular sleeve mounted onthe mandrel, said slot registering with said pair of having neous object to ri thereto, said man mounted on the threaded portions of said mandrel in. abutment with the ends of said sleeve for securing said sleeve to said mandrel, said sockets and slot disposed 'at an angle with respect to the diameter of the mandrel.
3. An abrading tool of the character referred to comprising a solid cylindrical mandrel having reduced threaded portions at its opposite ends, the threaded portion at one end merging with a shank,.the shank having means at its outer end of angular contour and adapted to be gripped by an extraneous object to rigidly secure said mandrel thereto, said mandrel formed with a pairof circumferentially spaced sockets extending axially thereof, a pair of resilient clips frictionally sup orted in said sockets, an axially slotted tubu ar sleeve mounted on the mandrel, said slot registering with said pair of sockets,,'a sheet of abrading material'circumposed on said sleeve and havin the side edges thereof trained through said slot and anchored in said clips, 1 a pair of nuts mounted on the threaded portions of said mandrel in abutment with the ends of said sleeve for securing saidsleeve to saidmandrel, said sockets and slot disposed at an angle with respect to the diameter of the mandrel, said resilient cl 'ps being U-shaped having the ends of the sh t frictionally held between the legs.
4. An 'abrading tool of the character re= ferred to, comprising a solid cylindrical mandrel having reduced threaded portions at its opposite ends, the threaded portion at one end merging with a shank, the shankhaving means at its outer end of angular contour and adapted to be gripped by an extraneous object to rigidly secure said mandrel thereto, said mandrel formed with a pair of circumferentially spaced sockets extending axially thereof, a pair of resilient clips frictionally supported in said sockets, an axially slotted tu ular sleevemounted on the mandrel, said said pair of sockets, a
slot registering with sheet of abrading material circumposed on said sleeve and having the side edges thereof trained through said slot and anchored in i clips being U-shaped having the ends of the sheet frictionally held between the legs, the leading corners onvsaid slot being rounded to prevent cutting of the abrading sheet.
In testimony whereof I. afiix my signature.
. JAMES E. SIMS.
