The present invention relates to a can opener and has for its prime object to provide an apparatus for quickly and easily opening cans which are usually opened by means of keys.

Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, compact and convenient in its arrangement of parts, strong and durable, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use and operation, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

l5 WVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement ofparts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. i

Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5'denotes a can with a removable strip for opening the can, said strip having the usual extending tongue with which it is a common practice to engage a key for the purpose of winding the strip 6 thereon and opening the can.

The letter T denotes generally a T-shaped frame including head 7 and stem 8 and at the juncture of the head 7 and stem 8 is an opening 9 in which is swiveled shank 10 of knob 11. The stem 8 has an upstanding end 12 disposed at right angles thereto and provided with an opening 14..

The stem 8 is provided with an opening 15 adjacent the upstanding ear 12. A shaft 16 is journaled through the opening 15 and has its bottom end notched or slitted as at 17 and on its upper end is provided with a beveled gear 18. A crank shaft 19 is journaled through the opening 14 and has a beveled T pinion20 on its end meshing with the beveled gear 18.

Obviously by turning the crank shaft 19 and having the tongue of the strips 6 engaged in the slit 17, the strip 6 will be wound V on the shaft 16 thereby opening the cans 5. The knob 11 is used for holding the .T-shaped frame on top of the can in a steady position for efficient operation.

It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.

The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the'features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description. i

It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the in vention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:

1.' An apparatus of the class described comprising a T-shaped frame including a head and a stem, said stem merging into a right angularly disposed ear, a crank shaft journalled in the ear having a pinion thereon, a second shaft j ournaled through the stem 9 and having a beveled gear thereon meshing with the pinion, the extremity of the second shaft being slitted to engage the tongue of a removable strip of a can. i

An apparatus of the class described 7 5 comprising a T-shaped frame including a head and a stem, said stem merging into a right angularly disposed ear, a crank shaft journalled in the ear having a pinion there'-v on, a second shaft journaled through the H39 stem and having a; beveled gear thereon meshing with thepinion, the extremity of the secondshaft being slitted to engage the tongue of a removable strip of a, can, a, knob, means for swivelly mounting the knob at the junc-' ture of the'head with the stem.
