IMPROVEMENT IN SNAPV-HOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,9 l2. dated April 11, 1876; application lcd December 21, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, CHARLES. W. BLAKEs- LEE, of Litchfield, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Snap- Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled' in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specication.

In the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of the hook. Fig. 2 is a view of the inside of the enlarged forward end of the body, and of enlarged forward end of the tongue, in contact with the enlarged end of the body of the hook. Fig. 3 is a View of the inside of the enlarged end of the body. Fig. 4 is a view of the enlarged end and side ofthe tongue which comes against theenlarged end of the body of the hook.

My invention relates to snap or rein hooks, and its object is to obtain greater security against their accidental unhooking. The invention consists in making an enlargement on the forward ends of both the body and tongue of the hook, in a manner hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

Fig. l is a view of all the parts of the hook. A is the body of the hook, the forward end of which terminates in an enlargement or shield, a, and a rib, a', formed on the inside of the shield a, as shown in Fig. 2, and also in Fig.

3. The body A of the hook does not diler except in the form of its forward end from the bodies of ordinary hooks, and is furnished with a spring, operating on the tongue in the usual manner. The tongue B, Fig. 4, does not differ except at its forward end from ordinary tongues in snap-hooks;- and is pivoted or hinged to the body in the usual manner. The forward end is made with the lateral projections a and b, and with the slot c between them. 'Ihe lateral projections extend nearly to the edge of the shield a, and the slot c is formed to receive the rib m.

Thus constructed, the rib prevents lateral motion of the tongue, and the shield a prevents the ring or link to which the hook is attached from coming in contact with the end of the tongue. If the ring is turned over and strikes the back part of the tongue and pulls upon it, one or the other of the projections comes upon the opposite side of the ring, and the strain comes upon the tongue itself, having no tendency to free the ring from the hook.

I claim as my invention- A snaphook consisting of the body A, having the shield a and rib :u on its end, in combination with the tongue B, having the projections a b and slot c, substantially as shown and described.
