This invention relates to a shroud or canopy particularly adapted for use in connection with the plungers as disclosed in my Patent N o. 1,646,13t, granted on October18,
1927. In the operation of a plunger as described in the patent above referredto, several minor difliculties have been encountered.
The principal difficulty encountered is the tendency for the comparatively sharp upper edges of the manganese steel cups to catch on the welltubing between the couplings, thereby making it diflicult to pull the plunger up thru the tubing.

Another object of the invention isto hold a cup plunger such as disclosed in the patent above referred to, out of engagement with the well tubing particularly when it'is being raised thru said well tubing.
My invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of Which,with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of my invention. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said description as 1 30 may adopt various forms of my invention within the scope of the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a transverse section showing the use of my shroud or canopy in combination with a multistage pump plunger. In this view, my shroud is shown as being disengaged from the cup plunger and resting on the pump barrel.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing my shroud or canopy in cooperative engagement with the leading cup plunger.
My invention contemplates the use of a shroud or canopy 1 and as shown in the drawings is cylindrical in form and is adapted to slide over a plunger rod 2. The upper end of this shroud is tapered as at 3, while its lower end is provided with a boss 4: fornnng an annular shoulder 5. This necessitates that the outside diameter of the shroud 1 be slightly the outside diameter of the plunger cup. V 1' The operation of the device is as follows. Before the pumpis attached to the lower end of the sucker rod bywhich it is to be carried, the shroud is placed in position so that it is seated in the top cup. The pump is then attached to the sucker rod and lowered through the tubing as shown in Fig. 2.
WVhen thepump enters the pump cylinder,
or working barrel'which is atttached to the lower end of the well tubing, the shroud or canopy, due to its larger diameter cannot follow the pump into the working barrel, and therefore rests on top of the working barrel.
The shroud then remains in this position,
that is with its shoulder 5supported by the upper end of the pump barrel 8, while the pump is in service. WVhen it is desired to pull the pump out of the well, the top cup picks up the shroud, by telescoping over the boss 4 and engaging the shoulder 5 of the shroud' The diameter of the shroud being greater than the diameter of the cup, it serves to guide the cup or cups through the tubing thereby preventing their engagement with the walls of the well tubing. By so keeping the plungers from engaging. the walls of the well tubing and seams thereon nodifficulty is encountered in raising the pump therethrough and the working fit between the plungers and the pump barrel is retained regardless of the number of times that the plungers'are pulled through the well tubing. It will be seen that by the above disclosure I have provided a means for obviating the difiiculties encountered in the operation ofmy multi-stage cup pump plunger above refered to.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a cup plunger shroud comprising a cylindrical body member having a tapered guide head and a central boss at its lower end forming an annular shoulder against which the peripheral edgeof a cup plunger is adapted to seat.
2. In combination, a plunger rod, a cup plunger and a cylindrical shroud provided with a tapered guide head and a boss at its lower end forming an annular shoulder adapted to overlie the peripheral edge of the cup plun er, said boss being adapted to telescope within said cup plunger.
3. In combination, a pump barrel, a plunger rod andcup plunger, a cylindrical shroud resting on the barrel and having a depending annular flange adapted to enter the pump barrel and the cup plunger 4. In combination, a pump barrel, a plunger rod and cup plunger, a cylindrical shroud having at one end an annular shoulder for engagement with the end of the pump barrel, a depending annular flange on said shroud adapted to enter the barrel and define an annular recess therewith into which recess the cup plunger may enter.
