Patented May 20, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HOMER MCWILLIAMS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO LOCKWOOD LOCK- WOOD GOLDSMITH & GALT, TRUSTEE, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA SEVERAIBLE EGG CARTON Application filed May 9, 1928. Serial No. 270,293.
This invention relates to a paper or cardboa-rd carton suitable for packaging eggs and the other fragile articles v The chief object of the invention is to provide a carton and form the same such that it may be divided into similar sections and by a transverse division.
The chief feature of the invention con' sists in providing a carton adapted to hold a predetermined number of articles, such as a dozen of eggs arranged longitudinally in half dozen aligned relation in a carton that may be divided transversely, the parts thereof retaining their interlocked relation both before and after separation. V
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective view' of the carton with the sides and cover in open relation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank forming the exterior of the carton.' -Fig. 3
is an elevational view of the longitudinal compartment-forming strip. Fig. 4 is a, similar-view of the transverse partition strip.
In the drawings indicates the cover connected by a longitudinal scoring 11 to a side 12, in turn connected by a longitudinal scoring 13 to the bottom 14, which by the longitudinal scoring 15 is connected to another' side 16. The cover includes a. flap extension 17 connected thereto by the scoring 18. and
terminates in a tongue 19. Herein a pair of tongues are illustrated and the entire blank is provided with a transverse perforated scoring'20. Each tongue 19, when the blank is rolled up into box-formation, is receivable in interlocking relation by the slots 21 formed in the adjacent side 16.
Extending laterally of the blank and connected thereto by the scored portion 22 is the end 23 provided with a plurality of spaced notches 24, the end notches thereof being positioned immediately adjacent the sides of the ends and forming a tongue 25 at the end."
The bottom 14 is of reduced overall length and the notch 26 is provided. This is to insure positioning of the ends, when turned transverse to the bottom, within the carton. In other words, the sides and cover project beyond the ends. A plurality of elongated strips 31 include oppositely directed grooves 32 at each end which form similar tongues 33 at each end.
The aforesaid provides for interlocking engagement between the end carton ends and the longitudinal strip for maintaining the same in predetermined and interlocked relation. Herein three of said longitudinal strips are provided and on their upwardly or upon their other or rather opposite edge said longltudinal strips are provided with the grooves 34, the central groove being enlarged and Including an intermediate projectin tongue 35. The longitudinal member is a so transversely scored as at 36.
A plurality of transverse partitions strips 37 include grooves 38 equal in number to the number of grooves in the end members. The end grooves form end tongues 39. It will thus be noted that when the transverse strlps are interlocked with the longitudinal strlps, a honeycomb construction results with the additional novelty of a pair of transverse strips being positioned in relatively close but spaced relation and separated by the tongues of the longitudinal stri s, which tongues as indicated are transverse y perforated and scored and register with the transverse scoring 20 of the entire blank.
The completed carton is shown in full formation and in assembled relation wlth the cover and sides open in Fig. 1 and the dotted lines 36 and 20 therein indicate where the 'ing portions of the ends, a pair of strips lying immediately adjacent and in spaced relation to each other and parallel to the blank ends and transverse to the strip, said parallel strips having interlocking connections wlth said transverse strip, the transverse strip and the blank including registering scorings transverse to the transverse strip and parallel to the parallel strips and intermediate the same 5 for transverse division of the carton between the spaced strips for forming two similar complete closed end smaller cartons from the larger carton.
2. A paper 01' cardboard carton for m fragile articles, comprising a blank having lateral extensions projecting therefrom form-- ing ends, said ends having grooved notches intermediate each end thereof, said blank being longitudinally scored and folded for forming a bottom, a pair of sides, a cover secured to one side and a flap for projecting lat-erallyithereof for positiomng adjacent the other side, a plurality of longitudinal extending strips, one for each groove and each having a complementary reversely grooved notch adjacent the end thereof for interlocking connection with the cartonends, and a plurality of transverse partition strips, said longitudinal strips and said partition strips 35 having reversely and complementary notched grooves therein for interlocking engagement, a pair of said transverse partition strips being positioned immediately adjacent but in spaced relation to each other and the said longitudinal strips and blank including registering transverse ,scorings permitting transverse severance to form two similar complete closed, end smaller cartons.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
