Description

. .POLISH ANDLIKE TIN Filed Jan. 26, 1929 Patented May 20, 1930 UNITED STATES WILLIAM HENRY NORNAIBLE, OF LEEDS, ENGLAND POLISH AND LIKE TIN Application filed. January 26, 1929, Serial No. 335,258, and in Great Britain February 6, 1928.
This invention relates to polish and like tins of the type provided on the body thereof with a pivoted lever adapted to be actuated in a plane at right angles to the sideof the tin so as to cause the lid to be lifted and thereby facilitate its removal.
In tins fitted with lid-raising mechanism of this type, as hitherto proposed, one end of the lever is'pivotally connected to that part or rim of the tin which is normally covered by the depending flange of the lid, said end of the lever passing between the rim of the tin and the lid flange and the other end of the lever depending beside the body of the tin. This arrangementnecessitates upward actuation of the free end of, the lever in a plane at right angles to the tin in order to raise the lid, and also entails recessing or grooving of the rim of the tin to permit of the passage of the lever between it and the lid flange and to allow of its pivotal connection with said rim.
Now the object of the present invention is to provide lid-raising mechanism of the type specified which will not entail recessing or grooving of the rim of the tin body and thereby prevent leakage, and which can be operated with onehand when the tin is lying flat on a table or the like.
According to the invention, the lid raising lever is pivotally mounted on the side of the tin at a position outside the lid flange and adapted to be depressed outwardly from and in a plane at right angles to the side of the 735 tin to raise the lid.
Figure 2 is a part sectional side elevation taken on the line A. B. of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a part side elevation of the tin s lid in a raised position.
Figure 4 is a part sectional side elevation of a lidcled polish or like tin having a modiown in Figure 1 but illustrating thefied form of the invention applied thereto.
Figure 5 is a part side elevation of the tin shown in Figure l but with the lid in a raised position. 7 7
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the 5:; drawings, the lever 1 is of double-ended right angular form, the shorter arm engaging the edge of the flange of the lid 2 and the other arm being adapted to serve as a manipulating end. The right-angular lever 1, which in the embodiment illustrated is made of sheet metal, is provided with side projections 8 adapted to aflord side trunnions or pivots for the pivotal mounting of the lever 1 within a sheet metal fitting or bracket 4; in the form of a U -shaped housing in plan, such housing or bracket 4 being welded or otherwise secured to the side of the tin body 5. The side trunnions or pivots 3 of the lever 1 engage appropriately positioned bearings holes 6 in the side walls or limbs of the U -shaped housing 4, and in this connection the bearing holes 6. are of such a size as to permit of a certain amount of play of the trunnions 3 within them, while the extremities of the limbs of'the Ll-shaped housing or bracket 4 are provided with flanges 7 whose upper ends afford auxiliary pivotal supports for the lever 1 when the latter is turned outwardly (see Figure 3),
To ensure of a better engagement with the underside or edge of the flange of the lid 2, the end of the short arm of the lever 1 may be-pointed orbe velled, and for this purpose also the "edge-of the flange of the S5 lid 2, may, as shown, be turned outwardly or rolled upon itself. p V g "The upper end of the lever l'normally lies against the flange of-thelid 2, as, shown at Figures 1 and 2, and the arrangement is such that, when the lever 1 is turned or actuated in aplane at right-angles to the side or thetin 5,-the lid-is raised, as shown at Figure "3 jsoas to facilitate removal thereof whilst'the lever 1 is automatically returned to its normal position,'ready for the next opening, by the rel-application of'the lid .2.
'f Instead of making the rightangular lever of sheetmetal; itma'y be made ofsolid metal with integral side projectionsortrunnions,
said lid or in lieu of such trunnions the lover may be bored through at the angle to take a pivot pin passed through it and the bearing holds in the side walls of the bracket or housing.
It will be seen that the lever l in its normal position, as shown in Figure 2, moves about a floating fulcrum formed by the enlarged openings -6, which receives the trunnions or lugs 3, so that as the latter moves in the openings, and the lever 1 assumes the position as shown in Figure 3, the fulcrum is transferred to the inwardly opposed flanges 7. By reason of this novel arrangement of parts, the lever 1 will exert a vertical pull on the edge of the lid. 2 without effecting any ,outward or lateral drag thereon. More over, due to the transferof the fulcrum from the openings V6 to the flanges 7, the lifting action is continued until the lower edge of the lid flange reaches the top of the rim of the body 5, and thus allows a greater depth of lift to be obtained.
Referring now to the embodiment shown in Figures4 and 5 of the drawings, a sheet metal bracket ,or U -shaped housing 4: is riveted or otherwise secured to the side of the tin body at its lower portion, and a straight sheet metal lever 1 is pivotally mounted within said 5.! shaped housing 4 by means of side trunnions or pivots f3 engaging bearing holes .6 in the side ,or limbs of said housing 4. A strip .of tape or other material 8 secured to the inside of the tin body 5 and passing between the depending flange of the lid 2 and the rim portion of the tin body 5 to the outside thereof is secured to the lever 1 at a point intermediate its pivotal connection and its free end, the arrangement being such that, upon actuation of the lever l in a plane at right-angles to the side of the tin, the pull of the lover I straightens out the tape 8 and thereby raises the lid 2 as shown at Figure 5. lie-application of the lid 2 causes the lever l tore-assume its normal position against the flange of the lid 2. The tape 8 may not be secured to the tin body 5.
-lam aware that it has before been proposed to employ a strip of flexible material passed between the lid flange and the rim of the t n for opening purposes by exerting a pull on the outer end of said strip.
I claim i 1. In combination with a container having a removable lid, of means for raising the lid compdsing a bracket having parallel sides and inwardly extending opposed flanges secured to the container, said parallel sides hav ng aligned openings, a lever having angularly disposed portions and laterally extenoing lngs, lugs arranged to loosely fit within openings to provide a floatas fille -1. f the lev r, .19 PQr Qn Ofthe leve .lw ll assessin he lo r ed of r b e .-tl. a ie n f t a: the ful rum 5 ran i r from the floating fulcrum to the opposed flanges of said bracket and the lid removed from the container.
2. In combination with a container having a removable lid, of means for raising the lid comprising a bracket having parallel sides and inwardly extending opposed flanges secured to the outside of the container, said parallel sides having aligned openings, a lever having angularly disposed portions and laterally extending lugs, said lugs arranged to loosely fit within said opening to provide a floating fulcrum for the lever, the end of One portion of the lever normally engaging the lower edge of said lid, said opposed flanges acting as an auxiliary fulcrum for the other portion of the lever when the latter is moved outwardly relative to the container.
3. A lid remover of the class described comprising a support, a lever having a lid engaging portion and a handle portion, said portions being angularly disposed relative to each other, means providing a floating fulcrum connection between said lever and said support, and means on said support providing an auxiliary fulcrum for said lever.
4. A lid remover ofthe class described comprising a support, a lever having a lid engaging portion and a handle portion, said portions being angularly disposed relative to each other, means providing a floating fulcrum connection between said lever and said support at the juncture of said portions, and means on said support providing an auxiliary fulcrum for said lever when said handle portion is moved outwardly relative .to the support.
