My invention relates to bottle closures and more particularly tomeans for latching a cap on a bottle, the principal object of the invention being to provide easily operable means for locking a cap on abottle that may the be operated repeatedly without reducin eflectiveness of the lock. A further o%ject is to provide a bottle closure wherein the looking members are movable longitudinally of the bottle neck and operation of the locking members impresses the cap on the rim of the bottle neck. I
. In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a. perspective view of a bottle provided with a closure embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective vievi oflthe device mounted on a bottle neck, portions of the bottle neck and device being roken away to disclose structure, the closure being shown in unlockedposition preparatory for removal.
Fig. 3 is a similar.view illustrating the closure in locked and bottle sealing position.
Referring in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a bottle having a neck 2 provided with a bead 3 adjacent the opening 4 and a second head 5 spaced from the firstnamed bead.
6 designates generally the bottle closure constructed according to my invention and comprising a cap 7 containing the sealing member 8 and having a depending skirt 9, and a sleeve member 10 which is,longitudinally slidable over the neok'ofthe bottle and is engaged with the skirt of the cap, for
suspension therefrom, as presently described.
The skirt of the 'cap is provided. with a recess portion 11 producing an.internalannular bead 12 adapted for resilient en agenlent with the upper bead of the neck or yieldingly latching the cap on the bottle for easy removal and an exterior annular groovel3 adapted to receive an annular internal flange 14 on the upper edge of the sleeve in unlocked position of the members. l

The cap skirtlis preferably longitudinally slit, as at 15, to provide resilient, normally outsprung fingers 16 having wall portions 17 and terminal flanges 18 turned outwardly from the wall portions.
The depending sleeve is provided with an outbent annular portion 19 providing a groove 20 to receive the flanges 18 of the skirt in unlocked position of the members, the portion 19 being spaced from the flange 14 by an intermediate portion 21 having substantially the same width as the wall portion 17 of theskirt fin ers, whereby the flange 14 is received -by t e groove 13 coincidently with the reception of the skirt finger flanges by the groove 20 of the sleeve.
A shallow and narrow groove 22 is formed in the wall portions 17 of the skirt, suitable for receiving and engaging the flange 14 when the flange is] moved over the wall portions, whereby the sleeve is latched in locking position. The sleeve is easily disengaged from the latch for movement to unlocked position.
The sleeve is further provided with a rolled rim 23 at its lower edge for facilitating the movement thereof over the bottle neck and for convenient engagement by operating means. I
In operating the device the sleeve is as sembled with the cap, the flange 14 of the sleeve being positioned in the groove 13 of the cap so that the cap may be mounted on the bottle neck. The cap is pressed down on the bottle neck to seal the bottle opening and the sleeve is then moved longitudinally over the bottle neck, the flange 14 moving over the wall portions 17 of't-he cap skirt and pressing these resilient members into contact with the bottle neck, the slit character of the skirt permitting the contraction thereof and the flanges 18 stopping the longltudlnal movement of the sleeve by intercepting the flange 14. The sleeve flange is latched 1n the The sleeve may be moved upwardly along the bottle neck to release the locking engagement of the members, the flange 14 moving into thegroove 13 of the cap and the flanges of the skirt fingers into the groove of the sleeve, the normally .outsprung character of the skirt fingers causing them to move away from engagement with the bottle neck to space the skirt from the bottle and permit removal of the cap. The sleeve is retained in engagement with'the cap and is, therefore, in position and condition for again locking the cap on the bottle.
The device may be used repeatedly and the members retain their locking qualities indefinitely.
What I claim and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bottle closure comprising a cap having 9. depending longitudinally slitted skirt provided with an annular recess, and a sleeve member having an inturned flange en'gageable with the skirt to latch the cap to the bottle and receivable by the recess-to release the cap.
' 2. A bottle closure comprising a cap having a depending elastic skirt provided with an annular recess, and a sleeve member having an inturned flange engageable with the skirt to latch the cap to the bottle and receivable by the recess! for releasing the cap.
3. A bottle closure comprising a cap having a depending skirt, and a longitudinally movable sleeve member depending from the skirt and including a flange engageable with p the skirt upon longitudinal movement of the sleeve member to latch the cap to the bottle.
4. A bottle closure comprising a cap including a depending finger normally sprung outwardly, a locking sleeve depending from the skirt and having an annular portion engageable with the outsprung finger upon longitudinal movement of the sleeve on the bottle in one direction to impress the finger into latching engagement with the bottle, and cooperating means on the cap and sleeve for limiting movement of the sleeve in the other direction.
5. A closure for a bottle having a peripheral bead, comprising a cap having depending fingers including upper portions adapted to engage the bead and lower portions normally sprung outwardly, and a locking sleeve depending from the skirt having an annular portion engageable with the outsprung fingers upon longitudinal movement of the sleeve on the bottle to impress the lower portions thereof into latching engagement with the bottle.
6. In a bottle closure, a cap including a skirt portion normally spaced from the bottle when installed and comprising resilient,
fingers and having an annular recessed portion and a wall portion extending from the recessed portion, and a sleeve longitudinally slidable on the bottle neck having an inwardly extending annular flange on its upper end receivable in said recess, in unlocked tion of the skirt to contract the skirt and lock the 0gp on the bottle.
7. n a bottle closure, a cap including a 'skirt portion comprising resilient fingers wall portion of the skirt to contract the skirtand lock the cap on the bottle, said means being stopped in looking movement by said flange.
8. In a bottle closure, a cap having normally outsprung fingers and retaining flanges at the free ends of the fingers, a looking sleeve having a groove to receive the flanges in unlocked position, and means on the sleeve engageable with the fingers upon longitudinal movement of the cap and sleeve relative to each other to frictionally lock the cap on the bottle, said movement being limited by said retaining flanges.
9. In a bottle closure, a cap having a deginding skirt including normally outsprung gers having transverse grooves, and a locking sleeve having a flan 'e engageable with said fingers for lockin t e skirt to the bottle and seatable in one 0 said grooves for latching the sleeve in looking position.
10. In a bottle closure, a cap having a die ending normally outsprung finger provided with a preformed latching groove, and a locking sleeve having a flange movable over the finger to impress the same against the bottle for frictionally locking the cap on the bottle, the flan e being seatable in said groove for latching t e sleeve in locking position.
11. In combination with a bottle having a peripheral head, a cap having an annular recess forming an internal rib movable over the head for latching the cap yieldingly to the bottle, and a depending skirt, a sleeve having a flange normally seated in said recess for mounting the closure on the bottle and movable over the skirt to lock the skirt frictionally to the bottle, and means for retaining'the sleeve on the/skirt including a nature.
