The ring 22 is so positioned that during each of the intervals at which it is at rest, one of the channels 25 will be in .a position immediately below the guide member 20, while an adjacent channel will be in a position (herein referred to as the wheel charging station) opposite to the carrier wheel 10. Thus the arrangement is such that one quadrant of the circular path round which the channels 25 are moved, forms the quadrant path through which each caramel'is conveyed fromthe cutting station to the wheel-charging station. Theleading end of the bar of stock 13 is fed into one of the channels25 and while in this position the knife 21 operates to sever the end portion ofthe ,bar thus forming an individual caramel. Each of the channels 25 forms a caramel holder to engage the base andoppositeend walls of a caramel. During the movement of each channel 25 between the cutting station and the wheel-charging station, the sides of the channel are enclosed, on the outside of the ring by an arcuate guide 28, and on the inside of the ring by a circular head 59 carried on the fixed spindle 24:2Lb011t the axis of which the ring rotates. The guides 28, 59 ensure that when the cutting of the bar of stock is efl'ected the leading end (which will form the caramel) is enclosed on all four sidesby the guides 28, 59 in conjunction with the end walls of the channel 25. through an arcuate path which is a quadrant 'ofacircle from a center lying at the intersection of theplanes aforesaid, into the path of the charging pusher, the transfer mechanism aforesaid comprising a plurality of caramel holders. moving zunidirectionally in sequence round a circle whereof one quadrant forms the aforesaidarcuate path, so that each holder is in turn moved through that path.
