UNITED j Sr-ATESf Bruns W. KABEL, on BALTIMORE, MAnYLAnnf-'iissrenon Y To THE sYMrn-e'ron COMPANY, a connonarron DRAFT Bree-mel OF .Mean-Na Application filed May 6, 1921. y Serial Nage-67,1349.
The invention' relates to draft rigging Vfor railway cars, and more particularly to means for operatively connecting a coupler to the cushioning mechanism ofthe draft rigging.`
The principal object of my invention, broadly stated, is to provide a simple, strong, reliable and eiicient coupler connecting means or yoke member adapted for use with the modern types of cushioning mechanism now commonly employed.
A 'Another object of my invention is to pro-` 2 5 the cushioning mechanism to prevent the distortion thereof.
@ther objects of the invention will hereinafter appear from the more detailed description hereof particularly when taken in `3p connection with the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated-twok embodiments of the invention.
In the drawings,-
Figure l is a top plain view of a Ydraftrigy ging and the associated parts of a car under-frame embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal vertical.V
sectional view of the constructionshown in Fig'. l, the cushioning mechanismV being A4 4) shown 1n elevation; and
Figure 3 is a view similarl to Fig. 2, Villustrating a slight modification. i v Throughout the specication and drawings like parts are indicated by like reference characters.
The numeral l ldesignates the center or draft sills of a railway car to which are connected, preferably by means of `rivets 2, a pair of stop lugs 3. Each stop lug is prov vided with a rearwardlyfacing.abutment orv shoulderll.` normally front vfaceofy the followerl of the cushion- "ing mechanism 16: In the preferred embodi-` ment of the inventiontheicushioningmecha- Ij-.sm is maintained, against bodilyrearward movement by means fofga centrallygdisposed stop casting 7 Iwhich bridgesthe space between the sills l and is connected to the inner faces thereof ,preferably by means-of rivets stantiallyof E section having a centrallong'i-` tudinally extending web 9 and a transversely extending web, 1,0,.thelast named webf formingV thestop fac'effof the` said stop casting. If desired, the stopface 1 0 may be reinforced `by ak longitudinally extending centrally `disposed rib l1, clearly shown in Fig. l. `The coupler l2 is provided on the'innerendA of its stem-'with oppositely extending vertically arranged .pivot bosses 135,- the front v faces of.
whicharestruck on a radius .equal to theradius of the pivot boss.- l j The coupler connecting means .comprises aplurality'of closed loops or yokevmembers 14 which are adapted to straddle the cushion- Aing mechanism 6 and vwhich at their forward vBY' Mnsivn fasste-murs,

adapted,v to engagek the i and rear ends respectively extend above and i below the stops 3 and 7,
as clearly shown in Fig.2.jAt their forward ends theloops 14v areproyided with` curved-,bearing faces l5 adapted to engage the curved outeriface ofthe respective pivot boss 1 3 of the'couplerr of each loop on oppo- 12. The inner faces sitesides ofthe pivot lfmaybe provided with fins-or ribsll which serve to always `maintain the pivot boss lon the -lon,'f: itudi` nal center line ofthe car.
j The upper and lower side edges `of.` the Yfollower 5 are notched as at` 17 solas to accom- `modate thelongitudinally extending arms of thek respective loops 14,
InFig-3 Iprovide each loop member '1.8
Vadjacent itsrear end withl a transversely eX- tending web andan upright fiangelQ-and 20, respectively, thusmaking the transversely extending rear portion of each `loop, vof substantially Hshape in cross section. The object of thus reinforcing-,the rear` end of the loopis torprovide Contact points to engage the di-vided? Stop mainter` -21`Whchis sub- VFig. 3 is in all respects lidentical with the construction ofFigs. 1 and 2, and therefore `need not be` further described. l
The operation of the device will be .ob-Y vious tothose skilled inthe art',since on the forwardmovement of the coupler from normal, theV engagement of the coupler E'boss 13- with the respective loops 14-will carry the ipler and cushioning mechanism,'said means loop members 14; with the coupler, thus moving the cushioning mechanism 6 toward Athefollower 5; 'and since the` movement of this follower is prevented by the engagement thereof with; the stop members 3 the cushioning mechanism will be YCompressedand will' y yieldingly 1resist the outward movement of the coupler.'V Under an. inward or buffing Y movement of the couplerth'eirear end ofthe coupler-'bearing directly against the follower I 5 will force the same inwardly and hence said coupler and cushioning mechanism, said means including a pair of independent spaced i horizontally disposed yokes, each of which embraces the cushioning mechanism and is adapted to pivotally Vwith, and means for operatively connecting 1 4. In a draft rigging, the combination with a coupler, ofV a cushioning mechanism therefor, pivot bosses formed onrsaid coupler, and means forl operatively connecting said coucomprising a pair ofl horizontally disposed vertically spaced yoke members each adapted to engage one of the said pivot bosses on said coupler and embracek said cushioning mechanism. compress the cushioningmechanism between j the stop member 3 and the `stop'member 7 of' Figs.V 1 andl 2, or the stop members V21 of Figure 3, as thecase may be. Y While I have not illustrated any means for maintainingthe draft rigging in place, it is obviousthat any of the` many forms of construction now commonly employed may be used with my device. It is also obvious that by my 'construction I am enabled to assemble and disassemble the draft rigging independently of Vthe coupler connecting means `by simply removing the cushioning mechanism iaYEiis wfKAnEL.'
6 and then slidingtlie follower 5 rearwardly y v sufficiently Ato permit the follower to be ro tated so Vas to `clear the end portions thereof from engagement with the lower loop mem-` ber 14. Correspondingly to replace the draft rigging this operation is reversed.
yI claim:
1. In a draft rigging, the `combination with Y a coupler having oppositely disposed pivotk bossesformed thereon, of a cushioning mechy Y anism therefor, stops for said mechanism,
` and means for Voperatively connecting lthe coupler to said mechanism, said means -in cluding a pair of independent vertically separated horizontally disposed yoke members surrounding said cushioning mechanism,v

In a draft rigging, the combination with Y a coupler furnished with integral yoke Vengaging portions and a cushioning mechanism for said coupler, of means for operatively connecting the same, said means including vertically spaced members each of which embraces .the said cushioning mechanismand is pivot.
