Description

May 6, 1930.
W. OBRIEN BULL WHEEL POST 0R BEARING SUPPORT Filed June 11. 1928 Patented May 6, 1930 UNITED STATES.
PATENT FFICE BULL-WHEEL POST OR'BEARING SUPPORT Application filed J'une 11,
My invention relates to bull-wheel posts, and more particularly to metallic posts for use in drilling purposes.
The invention consists of certain novel fea tures and details of construction, as will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
I will now describe my invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts and in which Figure 1, is a side elevation of one of the posts showing the recessed portions and the journal-box, and Fig. 2, is a front elevation of both posts showing the manner of securing them to the channel-iron, and top bracing iron. 7 f A, represents the posts, B, the journal-b0 and C, and D, the recessed portions thereof.
The posts are made from H-beam iron and are very substantial. V The recesses D, in the lower ends of the posts are out in the rear sides, both sides of the anges being cut away back to the center web, while the recesses C, are cut in the front or on the opposite side of the web, for the purpose of securing the posts to a crossmember E, which runs across and is secured to the legs of the derrick (not shown). 1
=H-beam, drilling away about one-half of the web for the purpose of receiving. the journalbox B. This journal-box is then welded rigidly in place and-may be babbitted for receiving the journals on the hubs of the bull-wheel reel.
Suitable holes aredrilled in both ends of the posts for receiving rivets or bolts for se curing them to the channel-iron and the up- 40 per cross member, also holes are drilled in A hole F, is then drilled in one side of the 1928. Serial No. 284,339.
web into which is welded a journal-box, together with suitable holes drilled in each end ofthe posts or supports for securing same in position when in use, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination in bull-wheel posts or bearing supports, formed from H-beam iron and provided with recesses ineach end thereof and opposite to each other, a hole in one side and extending about half way through the center web into which is welded a j ournalbox, together with holes drilled in each-end'of the posts or supports, in combination with the cross-member and channel-iron of a derrick to which is secured said posts or supports, all substantially as shown and described. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have hereunto set'my hand.
WILLIAM OBRIEN.
the posts for securing braces to them which run to the floor of the derrick.
Having described my invention, What I 5 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. The improvements in bull-wheel posts or bearing supports formed from H-beam' iron, having recesses in'each end thereof and opposite toeach other, a hole in oneside and 50 extending about half .way through the center
