i VThe invention relates to an appliance-for packing a'pipe which is to be hydraulically tested, and has for its purpose to provide a partially 1n section, partially in elevation, 20
pipe packing structure having awater seal the eiliciency of which is adapted to increase with the increase of pressure of water attempting to leave the pipe by way'of the water seal, whereby the tendency 'of the high Water pressures employed in `pipetes'ting canl be toward maintaining, rather than towardv breaking down or destroying the water seal.
The novel feaures of my invention and the manner in which it is reduced to practice will become apparent from the full description of the embodiment of the invention set forth in the drawing merely for the purpose of illus-f tration.
The single viewof said drawing discloses,
and partially broken away, a pipe to be hydraulically tested, and also shows, partiallyvin section, partially vin elevation, and partially broken away, appliancesl made in accordance with my inventionA and associated with said pipe.
With regard to the drawing and the nu merals of reference thereon, 10 represents a pipe to be hydraulically tested, and 11 `and 12 indicate, generally, packing appliances having the characteristics of my invention, there being an appliance about each of the Opposite ends of the pipe.
So far as the essential v'features of the invention are concerned, the appliances 11 and 12 maybe duplicates, but when adapted to use, they are slightly dierent,V one having an inlet for water, 'and the other being solid except for, an outlet' for air, Vas will be understood. Y

A block 13 of this appliance is adapted to be stationarily supported, *as by a fixture 14, and is provided with a water inlet 15 leading to the interior of the pipe.
An annular shoulder 16 of the block 1 3 is adapted to surround the adjacent end portion .of the pipe in spaced relation thereto, to provide an annularchamber 17, about said adjacent end portion of the pipe, dened by an annular flat outer wall 18 concentric with the pipe, and an annular desirably fiat base 19 perpendicular to the wall" 18.
A packing ring supportl consists of a disc which comprises an annular element 2O adapted to rest against the base 19 anddesirably engage the wall 18, an integral upstanding annular neck 21 upon the annular element and extending beyond the shoulder 16, in spaced relationto, and preferably concentric with, the wall 18 and the pipe,.and having preferably al well rounded annular head o'r bead 22 upon the neck and parallel with the base 19. Ports 23 in the annular neck 21 are to allow passage of water through the packing ring support to the part of the annular chamber at the'side of said support 'i opposite the pipe.
The inner face of the base 24 of an annular U-shaped packing ring of suitable material,
such as leather, is adapted to rest against the annular head or bead 22 of the ring support, while the spaced apart legs 25 and 26 of said packing ring extend )into the' chamber 17 in such manner that the outerface of theleg 25 snugly encircles thesurface of vthe pipe and the outer lface of the leg 26 bears snugly against the annular wall 18 of the shoulder 16. y y A packing ring retainer 27 consists of an annular plate having a Banged surface 28 Y vadapted to fit against'a corresponding surface of the shoulder of thei'block 13, and an annular groove 29 ,adjacent the anged surfaces and adapted to lit, when said'surfaces asy y,The packing appliance 12 at the end of the pipe opposite its inlet, may be similar to the appliance 11 already described, except that mil c the block 13 is solid, or is closed, at the loca` i tion which corresponds tothe water inlet of the block 13, and that said block 13 hasan ordinary air outlet 3.1, desirably at the longitudinal or transverse top of the pipe, and propipe and said vided `of course, with shut-oi means (not shown). The block 13 is adapted to be stationarily supported, in a manner for example, similar to that of supporting the block 13, while the testing is being accomplished.
Water which enters the chamber 17, beneath the packing ring, in an attempt to leave the pipe, will cause the legs 25 and 26 of said packing ring to engage the pipe wall and the annular wall 18, respectively, -under pressure commensurate with the water pressure, as will be obvious, so that the tendency of the high water water seal, rather than toward the destruction thereof, as has heretofore beenthe case. 4 i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:

A packing appliance for pipes to be hydraulically tested, comprising a block adapted to be in proximity to an end of a "to said pressures-employed when testing i plpes will be toward the maintenance of the pipe and having a shoulder surrounding `the adjacent end portion of said pipe in spaced relation thereto. to provide an annular chamber between said pipe'end `portion and an annular wall of said shoulder concentric with said pipe, an annular packing ring support associated least partially in said chamber iii-spaced and concentric relation to said pipe and said annular shoulder wall, an annular packing ring of general U-shape in cross-section having they inside face of its base resting against said support and its legs situated in spaced apart relation to eachother, the outer face of one with said-block and situated at` of said legs snugly encircling said pipe andv at least a part. of the outer face of the other of said legs snugly engaging said annular wall of said chamber, and a retainer ixing said annular packing ring relatively to said annular wall.

A packing appliance for pipes tobe hydraulically tested, comprising a block adapted to be in proximity to an end of a pipe and having a shoulder Surrounding the adjacent end portion of said pipe in spaced, relation to prevent lea thereto to provide an annular chamber about A said` pipe end portion and defined by an annular wall of said shoulder concentric with said pipe and an annularbase constituted by a surface of said block within the confines of said annular shoulder wall, an annular packing ring support resting against the annular base of said chamber and situated in spaced and concentric relation to said pipe and said annular shoulder wall, an annular packingl ring of general U-shape in crosssection aving the inside face of its base resting against the outen edge of said support and its legs situated in spaced apart relation to each other, the outer face of one of said legs snugly encircling said pipe and at least a part o the outer face of the other of said legs snugly engaging said annular wall of said chamber, the outer face said ring and its support in fixed relation chamber base. l n
3. A packing appliance for pipes adapted to prevent, a leakage of fluid under internal pressure therefrom comprising an annular member adapted to encase an end of said pipe and having an inwardly extending recess, the lwalls walls of said pipe defining an annular chamber, means for -transmitting the internal pressure of said pipe to said chamber, an-an-- nular U-shaped sealing member in said chamber, the base of said U-shaped member and one of the legs thereof closely engaging, the walls of said recess, the Aother leg of 'said U-shaped member closely engaging the wall of said pipe whereby the internal pressure of said pipe tends to maintain a Huid seal and prevent leakage of the fluid from said pipe.
