PATENT QFFIOE.
RUDOLPH J. SOHWAB, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-BALANCE 'CLA MPING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,767, dated April 4, 1876; application filed January. 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH J. SOHWAB, of the city of Oshkosh, \Visconsin, have invented a new Sash-Balance Clamping Device, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to and consists in a novel combination of devices, hereinafter more fully described, which allow the upper or lower sash, or both together, to be suspended in an open or partially-open position by means of a suitable cord, socket-clamp, guiding-pulley, and longitlulinally-extending cord-clamping lever, as specifically pointed out and claimed.
Figure 1 shows a front view of a window,
7 with the cord and clamp in the center of the same. Fig. 2 is a side view of a window, showing the cord in its proper position, and also the manner of attaching the same to the upper sash. Fig. 3 is a front view of the clamp, with the outer end of the lever raised as it will appear when the cord is passing through the clamp. Fig. 4 is a front view of the clamp, with the lever in position to hold the cord firm in the socket. Fig. 5 is a side view of the lever. Fig. 6 is a top view of the socket part of the clamp as it will appear when attached to the sash.
1n the annexed drawings, A designates the socket part of the clamp; B, the lever or dog; (1, the upper rail of the sash, to which the clamp is attached. D designates the cord; E, the pulley attached to the upper part of the wimlow-frame; F, the upper rail of the upper sash, to which the cord is attached.
The lever is pivotedto the socket in such a manner that a downward pull on the cord when the upper sash is down releases the gripe of the lever or dog, and raises it, to As soon as the motion of the cord through the clamp is discontinued, the lever or dog falls to the position seen in Fig. 4, which brings the inner end face, as shown, whereby the cord is the more effectively held. A cord-guiding pulley, a, is
placed in bearings b of the socket-clamp, said pulley guiding the cord and keeping it in place. The lever B, extending along the surface of the sash to which its bearing is secured, is conveniently out of the way.
A window provided with a cord and clamp in the manner described, the upper and lower sash not only balance each other, but they can be placed in any position required.
If an opening both above'and below is desired, raise the lower sash, and the upper one. will descend an equal distance. If only the lower one is to be raised, grasp the free end of the cord and pull outward, and the sash will ascend. As soon as the strain on the cord is discontinued the clamp takes effect and holds the sash in place. If the upper sash is to be lowered, raise the lever or dog sufficiently to release the cord, and it will descend until the lever is allowed to fall.
What I claim as my invention is The socket-clamp A, provided with an inner cord-grasping surface, and bearings I), in which is placed the cord guiding pulley a, all of a single piece, combined with the pivoted cordclamping lever B, extending longitudinally along the face of the sash to which the socket-clamp A is secured, substantially as herein described.
RUDOLPH J. soHWA'B.
