GASOLINE VAPORIZER Application led January 24, 1928. Serial No. 249,070.
y This invention vrelates to gasoline vaporizers and has for an object anew and improved means for and methodlof producin a combustible mixture of gasoline vapor an air.
According tothis -invention a mixing chamber is provided in which vthere is arranged a supply of brous absorbent material presenting a large surface area. The iibrous material is saturated with gasoline which is held by the fibrous material through capillary attraction. The combustible mixture is obtainedby di-rectin a draftof air through and around the fi 'rous material. Because of thev large area of contact between the air and gasoline the latter readily evaporates or volatilizes and forms an ignitable mixture with the air. This mixture may varyy from one part ofv gasoline and nine. parts of air to one part ofpgasoline and sixteen parts of air at 68 BaumeJ which proportions, as is well known, form combustible mixtures. The vaporized mixture is allowed to escape from the chamber through a suitable outlet and may be used as the fuel for cigar lighters or for internal combustion engines either for motor vehicles or motor boats or for any other purpose for which it is suitable.
A cigar or cigarettelighter embodying the invention comprises a casing having a spring actuated cover hinged thereto. Within the casing is provided a chamber in which is contained the :fibrous material. A plurality of and means are supplied for introducing air air into the chamber are operable by thev cover when closing so that when-the covei` is next opened there is animmediate flow of vaporized fuel through the burner tubes.
yof the lighter;
burner tubes lead from the top of the chamber Other objects, novel features andadvantagesfof this'invention will be apparent fromv the following specification and accompanying drawings wherein,
Fig..1 is a perspective view of a cigar 5* lighter embodying the invention;
Fig.` 2 is a vertical section through such lighter; n
Fig. 3 is a sectionon the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion 69 Fig. `5 is av sectlon substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Q The invention is disclosed s ecifically as embodied in a cigar lighter whlch comprises a casing 10 having a cover 11 pivoted thereto. (A spring 12 is provided for forcing open.
the cover 11 when the detent l13 which normally holds thev cover in closed position is released. A chamber 14 is formed within the casing by means ofthe partition 15 whichgis shown in detail in Fig. 4. One leg of the partition 15 terminates above the bottom of the casing 10 and rests upon a block 16. In the upper face of the block 16 there is provided a recess into which lits the lower end of Aa cylinder 17. A passageway 18 comv municating with the interior of the chamber. 14 leads from the recess. In the passageway 18 is provided a spring-operated ball 19 which acts'as a check valve. `A piston 20 is slid-` ablyarranged in the cylinder 17 and forms therewith a pump for forcing air into the chamber l5. A plurality of apertures 21 are provided in the upper portion of the partition 15 and aslide 22 overlies these apertures.' "Ihe slide Cil is also provided with apertures .23 which in one position of the slide"22 register with they 90 apertures 21 and-in 'another position of the slide are out of register with th'e apertures@l 21. A lever24`is pivotally'mounted above" the slide 22 and :has one end engaging the-f` same so that oscillation of the lever 24 causes reciprocation of the slide 22.' The upperend of the lever 24 is formed with a yoke 25 which receives-a pin l26`carried at the free'end of a a link 27- ,pivotally attached tothe cover 11 at 28. "The arrangement'- ofthe link is such 1U0 is operated to move the slide 22 so that-the apertures 23 are out of register with the l apertures 21 and when the cover is opened to move the slide 22 to into register. l e
A plurality of tubes 29 are supported in the upper part of the casing 10 in alignment with the apertures 21 and have their lower ends engaging the slide 22. Thus when the cover 11 is open the interior of the vchamber 14 is in direct communication with the tubes 27. Sparkproducing means 30 are suppo bring these apertures the movable element thereof is connected to 'the pin 26 so that it is operatedupon operation of the cover. Thus when the cover 11 is thrown open b the spring 12 uponJ release of the detent 13 t e tubes 29 are put into com-y munication with the interior 'of the chamber 14 and the spark producingmeans are operated to ignite the gas escaping from -the chamber 15 through the tubes 29.
Within the chamber 14 thereis provided, a plurality of strips 31 of fibrous absorbent material. A. material which has been found to be very satisfactory is knownas southern fiber. Thismaterial after having been thoroughly' Washed and arran ed within the chamber acts as a gasoline a sorbent. This material absorbs gasoline introduced into the chamber and distributes it over a large surface. Because of the distribution of the gasoline and thelarge area of contact a current of ainblown through and around such b'er soaked with gasoline readily evaporates or volatilizes the gasoline and forms therewith an ignitable mixture. n
In the operation of this device the piston 20 is utilized to introduce air under pressure into the casing 14 so as to produce the required low of air through the brous mate rial. This is referably done by raising the piston 20 witlli) the cover 11' open and then closing the cover 11 at the same time forcing down the piston 20. The piston being forced down during the time that the valves are closing introduces into the lchamber. 14 a suiiicient supply of air for the next operationof the device. Thus when the detent 13 is released and the cover 11' forced open by the spring 12 there is an immediate flow 'of a gaseous mixture of gasoline vapor and air through the tubes 29 whichis ignited by the 1 sparks produced by the means 30 which is operated upon the openin ofthe cover. The iame may be maintains if desired by pumping additional air into the chamber 14.` Preferably a shield 32 is provided around the up. per end of the tubes 27 as a protection against wind and draft.
Although the invention has been specifically disc osed as embodied in a cigar hghter, it is app rent that the principle of vaporizing gaso e or passing a draft of air over a line may be utilized in I Ifd` adjacent the upper ends of the tubes 29 and saturated with gasomany different wa s andin connection with various-devices dyepending for their operation upona fuel com fibrous absorbent body rising a mixtureof asoline vapor and air.
t is to be understood't at this invention isnot limited to the specific embodiment disclosed but. its scope is limited only by the appendedclaims in which the invention is presented both in its broad and one specific aspect.
