. tively inexpensive construction, designed for use in connection with a pig pen or other enclosure and adapted to permit the passage of pigs of a certain predetermined size and smaller pigs, and to prevent the passage of larger animals, so that the pigs may pass freely out of the pig pen or enclosure and return to the same, whereby the pigs may be fed separately, either for supplying them with feed of a difierent character or kind from that fed to the hogs or larger animals, or for other purposes. 1
A further object of the invention is to provide apig creep gate of this character adapted as the pigs increase in size to be adjusted zo-from time to time, to provide an opening or 2 opened and closed when it is desired to perpassageway of the required size for the passage of such pigs.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pig creep gate which may be readily mit the passage of hogs or animals of larger size. 1 r
'VVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustratedin the accompanyingfdrawings and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, size, and minor detailsof construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

In the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the pig creep gate comprises in its construction a rectangular gate frame composed of vertical end bars 1 and 2 and top and bottom horizontal connecting bars 3 and i secured together and having their ends rabbeted or recessed to arrange their front and rear faces in flush relation. The rectangular gate frame is provided at one end with upper and lower bearings 5 to receive approximately hook-shaped pintles 6 extending over the top bar and under the bottom bar and fitting in the bearings 5 for connecting the gate frame with a hinge member 7. The
hinge member 7 consists of a vertical bar of metal or other suitable material provided at its ends with the pintles 6 and equipped with a clamping bar 8 adjustably connected with the hinge member by bolts 9 having nuts 10 provided with operating arms to enable them to be readily turned for clamping a post or other fixed portion of a fence or the like, whereby the pig creep gate is hinged to the same. This will enable the gate to swing on vertical pintles for opening and closing it. A plurality of bolt openings 11 and 11 are provided in the hinge member and in the clamping bar to permit the bolts to be arranged different distances apart to. accommodate the fixed portion to which the hinge member is to be clamped.
An opening or passageway of the required size is provided for the passage of pigs or other smallanimals of a predetermined size by means of a vertically disposed eccentric roller 12 and a vertically disposed adjustable bar 13. The eccentric roller, which is of a size to extend across the space between the top and bottom bars of the gate frame, is provided at its upper and lower ends with the eccentric roller.

The journals are fixed to the roller which is preferably constructed of wood, but it may be made of any suitable material, and the eccentric portion of tie roller projects inwardly in the direction of the adjustable bar and is provided with a series of vertically disposed steps 17 spaced apart and forming a rough or corrugated surface adapted to be engaged by a hog or other animal larger than of a size to pass through the space between the roller and the adjustable bar, whereby when a hog or other large animal attempts to force itself through the opening between the roller and the said bar 13 the roller will rotate and its eccentric portion will be carried toward the bar 13, thereby constricting the space and preventing the passage of the hog. The rotative movement of the roller will enable the hog to readily extricate itself, and the arrangement of the eccentric portion of the roller will also facilitate the return of pigs to a pen or enclosure from the eX- terior thereof. The projecting portion of the roller is maintained in proper position with relation to the adjustable bar by means of a spring 18 connected with a lever arm 19 of the upper pintle 14 and adapted to be distended by the rotary movement of the roller. The spring is provided at one end with an eye 20 to engage a terminal hook 21 of the lever arm 19, and the other end of the spring is connected with the upper pintle of the hinge member 7. The spring may, however, be mounted in any other desired manner and it yieldably maintains theeccen'tric roller proper position with relation to the adjustable bar 13.
The adjustable bar '13 is provided at its upper and lower ends with recesses 22 to receive the upper and lower bars of the frame of the gate, and it is pierced by upper and lower bolts 23 which also extend through a clamping bar 24. The bolts are provided with adjusting nuts 25 having suitable handles for enabling them to be readily adjusted to clamp the upper and lower bars of the gate frame between the clamping bars and the adjustable bar, wherebv the latter isheld in the desired position in spaced relation wlth the eccentric roller. The upper and lower ends of the clamping bar 24 are provided with terminal lugs 26 to engage over the top bar 3 and under the bottom bar 4. This construction adjustably secures the bar 13 to the gate frame and braces the latter. T he bar 13 by its adjustment is adapted to vary the width of the space between it and The adjustable bar 13 is preferably constructed of woodyand the clamping bar of metal, but any suitable material may be employed for this purpose. The vertical. end bar 2 of the frame of the gate is provided with a vertical clamping bar 28 secured to the end bar 2 by bolts 29 arranged at the upper and lower ends of the clamping bar and piercing the same and provided with nuts 30 having operating arms or handles and adapted to be readily rotated to clamp one of the horizontal rails of a fence anel between the end bar2 of the gate and the clamping bar 28. The clamping bar and the adjusting means operate as a latch for detachably holding the pig creep gate in its closed position, and the nuts in the clamping bar may bereadily removed to permit the pig creep gate to be swung on the pintles of the hinge member.
The pig creep gate will permit the passage of of certain size and will prevent the passage of larger pigs or hogs, and the clamping bars and the character of hinge its clamping means will prevent the g roin tearing the gate looseand getting the same out of position.
in Figs. 5 and 6 of the accompanying drawings is illustrated another form of the invention, in which a swinging or pivoted eccentric wing or member 31 is arranged in spaced relation to the adjustable bar 13. The eccentric member 31, which is tapering or wedge-shaped in cross section, has a rounded face 32 at its free edge, and it is mounted between the top and bottom bars 3 and 4 of the gate on upper and lower journals 1% and 15, which are arranged in the bearing 0pen- 16 in the top and bottom bars 3 and 4 to mit a rotary or swinging movement of the eccentric win or member on a vertical axis. lhe eccentric wing or member 31, which may be constructed of any suitable material, is preferably made of wood, and it irojects inwardly from the gate in the direc tion of the adjustable bar and its rounded convex face 32 is adapted to be engaged by a passage of the hog. The swinging or rota-- tive movement of the eccentric wing or member will enable the hog to extricate itself readily, and the arrangement of the eccentric wing or member will also facilitate the return of pigs to a pen or enclosure fromthe exterior thereof. The projecting eccentric ping or member is maintained in proper position with relation to the adjustable bar by means of. the spring 18 connected with the lever arm 19 of the upper pintlelt. and with the upper pintle 6 of the hinged member, similar to the eccentric roller as heretofore described. The construction illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings is the same as that shown in the other figures, with the exception that the eccentric wing or member 31 is substituted for the eccentric roller 12.
What I claim is:
1. A gate of the character described comprising a gate frame forming an opening, a vertically disposed roller eccentrically mounted in the opening of the gate frame and arranged at an angle to the said gate frame and forming one side of a passageway through the gate frame and movable towards the gate frame to constrict the passage, and means for yieldably maintaining the roller in such projecting position, the roller being provided with vertical strips forming a corrugated surface.
2. A gate of the character described comprising a gate frame forming an opening, a vertically disposed roller eccentrically mounted directly in the gate frame vertically across the opening of the gate frame and arranged at an angle to the said gate frame and forming one side of a passageway through the gate frame and. movable towards the gate frame to constrict the passage, means for yieldably maintaining the roller in such projecting position, and a vertically disposed adjustable bar mounted on the gate frame and forming the opposite wall of the said passage and adapted to vary the size of the passage.
3. A gate of the character described comprising a gate frame forming an opening, a vertically disposed roller eccentrically mounted in the opening of the gate frame and arranged at an angle to the said gate frame and forming one side of a passageway through the gate frame and movable towards the gate frame to constrict the passage, means for yieldably maintaining the roller in such projecting position, a vertically disposed adjustable bar recessed at its ends and fitted in the opening and forming the opposite wall of the said passageway, a vertically disposed clamping bar having terminal lugs engaging over and under the gate frame and cooperating with the adjustable bar to grip the gate frame, and adjusting means connecting the adjustable bar and the clamping bar.
4. A gate of the character described comprising a gate frame forming an opening, a vertically disposed roller eccentrically mounted directly in the gate frame across the gate frame opening and arranged at an angle to the said gate frame and forming one side of a passageway through the gate frame and movable towards the gate frame to constrict the passage, a shaft for said roller terminating in a lever arm connected with the eccentric roller and extending above the top of the frame, and a spring above the frame connected with the lever arm for yieldably maintaining the roller in position.
A gate of the character described comprising a gate frame forming an opening, a vertically disposed roller eccentrically mounted in the opening of the gate frame and arranged at an angle to the said gate frame and forming one side of 'a passageway through the gate frame and movable towards the gate frame to constrict the passage, a lever arm connected with the eccentric roller and arranged at the top of the frame, a hinge member having hook shaped pintles receiving and hingedly mounting the gate frame, and a soring engaged with the upper hook shaped pintle and with the lever arm for yieldably maintaining the roller in position.
