IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE STANDS FOR DANDY-ROLLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,724, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD MGDERMID, of Test Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Stand for Dandy-Rolls in Paper-Machines, of which the following is a specification The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of my improved stand for dandyrolls in paper-machines.

My invention is intended to provide an improved stand for the dandy-rolls used in paper-machines for making the impression or water-mark on letter and bank-note paper. Each machine has a number of dandy-rolls of all lengths and diameters, which have to be supported in the frame of the machine by stands fitted for each roll.

My invention consists of an upright stand with adjustable lower arm and journal-beari n g for carrying any size of dandy-roll, and of an adjustable top arm and screw-clamps for supporting the cloth-holding stick or flag in the proper position to the roll.

In the drawing, A represents an upright support or base-piece, that is secured, by top and bottom nuts to the frame of the papermachine. This base part A of the stand carries, in a perforated head, B, a horizontallysliding arm, 0, that may be adjusted by means of the base part in longitudinal or lateral di'- rection toward the frame of the machine, according as longer or shorter dandy-rolls are to be placed thereon. The horizontal arm (1V is rigidly held in position by screwing down the upright top part A of the stand until the same clamps tightly on the arm 0.

A U-shaped brass pan or bearing, D, for the journal of the dandy-roll is screwed or otherwise attached to the outer end of arm 0, to be set to any direction and inclination for supporting the roll, according as the position of arm 0 requires it.

A sliding socket-piece, E, is applied to the upper end of the top part A and firmly clamped to greater or lesser height thereon by a horizontal top arm,F, screwed home into the same. The top arm F is provided with a screw-thread and two adjustable clamp-nuts, F, which take hold of the stick or flag that stretches across the machine and carries the cloth for touching the roll to keep spots of pulp from sticking to the same. The adjustable top arm and clamps admit the cloth and stick to slide up and down, and in forward and backward direction, to suit the difierent diameters of the rolls. The stands at both sides of the machine may thus, by being properly set, carry dan ly-rolls of any length and diameter, and have the wiping-cloth readily adjusted thereto, doing thereby away with different stands for the rolls, and admitting the easier changing of the rolls on the stands.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the upright supporting-stand A A, horizontally-adjustable arm 0, having roll journal-bearing D, and the vertically-adjustable top arm E F, provided with adjustable clamp-nuts F F for the stick, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the perforated head B with the base part A of the stand, the horizontal arm 0, and top part A of the stand screwing into the socket to clamp the horizontal arm, as herein set forth.
