While the mechanism for splitting, tonguecutting and flap-molding have many features of novelty considered as unitary mechanisms, their cooperative organization 1n a -single machine is believed to be broadly 'new and constitutes one important aspect vof the invention. Itis, moreover, believed that splitting, mechanism'and" flap-molding' mechanism have not been heretofore associated in Fig. 9 isa view in 'perspectlve-4 of the Vrear end of a sole which has-been operated upon cooperative relation and thisv combination constitutes another broad aspect of the 1nvention.
The invention includes also `within 'scope the novel method of preparing soles for wood heels herein shown as carried out by themachi'ne disclosed, but obviously the method is capable of being practiced by other or different instrumentalities.

Th machine inl general comprisesa frame 1() in which is mounted a cam shaft 1:2 carryingk the various cams of the machinev and Vdriven throughv a 'one-revolution clutch, not
shown, of any `commercial construction.- The `forward portion of the machine frameis provided with horizontal dove-tailed ways 14. in which is mounted the carrier slide 16 having secured to its upper face a carrier plate 18 -upon which the scle is positioned preliminarily to its presentation to the machine. The'plate 18 is roughened orcorrugated upon its surface to'retainpthe sole vmore vsecurely and adapted to be reciprocated with the slide 16 forwardly and rearwardly. The slide 16 is actuated automatically by a cam lever 17 pivotally mounted in the frame 10 at its lower end upon -a studV 19 and connected at its, upper end through a link 15 to a pin 13 carried between ears projecting from the lowe'rside of the' slide A1b. The cam lever 17 is provided with a cam roll 21 through which 'rocking movement is imparted to thelever by a cam of suitable contour on'the cam shaft. lllhecam is so shapedfthat on starting the machine theV carrier is vmoved inwardly, presenting the sole first to the splitting knife and then dwelling in its inmost position, as will hereinafter appear, for'the purpose of permitting the flap-molding and tonguecutting operations to ltake place. In order toV grip the sole upon the carrier plate 18, a pair'of clamping devices 59 are mounted upon the carrier slide 16 and arranged to move into clamping engagement with the sole at a predetermined point in the inward -travel `of the carrier. The clamping devices each comprises an-arm pivotally connected to the outer end of a transverse clamp slide 51 and having also an intermediate link 61 connecting it to the'plate 18. A compresif.
sion spring 53 is interposed between the inner ends of the clamp slidesi 51 and this acts contlnually to urge the clamp slides outwardly and, consequently, to swing the clamping devices upwardly into releasing position. Each clamp slide is provided at its outerend with a roll 55 which'runs upon the face of a cam plate 57,' thus limiting thel outward movement ofthe slide at all times and having an inclined face which acts when the carrier mounted a clamping foot 53, backed up by a spring of'suiiicient tension to allow for soles of varying thickness and at the Sametime to' exert lsufficient clamping action upon the sole :to Vhold it reliably against displacement in Vthe position inwhich it Vhasbeen located in the carrier.
The splitting means for supporting and moving it will now be described. Should it be desired to vary the thickness of the flap transversely, the presser roll 91 may be correspondingly shaped. these circumstances, the resiliency of the sole may be relied upon to cause its transverse surface to conform to the-longitudinal shape of the roll or, Where that resiliency is regarded as insufficient, the effect may be intensified by suitably vshaping the transverse surface of the carrier plate 18. If it is desired to thicken the flap at acentral. zone, the contour of the face supporting the sole may be correspondingly shaped. n
In order to obtain uniform splitting, it-is desirable that the cutting edge' of the splitting knife 71should be located as closely as possibleV to the line of maximum pressure between the -presser roll 91 andthe carrier slide. In order that the tongue-cutting operation upon the carrier slide, the reargend of the plate 18 is provided with'a die opening 23l havingva contour of the shape which'Y it is desired to impart tothe heel-seat tongue. To
i support the sole'during the splitting operation, this aperture isV closed by a movable filling plate or shutterV 25, normally'fiush with the surface'of the plate 18, so that' the plate and shutter constitute an uninterrupted support for the sole. At the proper time in the cycle of the machine, the shutter is displaced to fmake the ydie opening 23 effective, so that a portion of the material of the heel-V seat maybe depressed into it as will presently appear.
The shutter 25 is mounted upon the end of a lever 27, pivotally supported upon the pin .V13 of the carrier slide and having a short depending arm 29 at right angles thereto.

The shutter is provided with a cen-Y tral raised portion and with a transverselyextending rib 35 which contacts with the under surface of the'carrier plate18 and soV limits the upward movement of the shutter, the spring stop 31 supplying a slight amount ofV lost motion to insure accurate seating of Vthe shutter.

The outer end of each plunger is provided with a downwardly projecting lip 41 which contacts Vwith, a cam-projection 13 (Fig. 2) located at the inner end ofthe` guide-way and moves each plunger outwardly when the carrier'slide reaches the limit of its initial i movement, so that the shutter is free to fall by its own weight from theV die opening 23.
The'tongue-cutting knife 151 is secured to a knife carriage 153 mounted for reciprocation in horizontal Vguide-.ways 154 formed in the frame of the machine. The knife carriage 153-is connected by a link 155 to the upper end of a rocker lever 157 pivotally mounted upon a stud 159 in the frame of the machine. The rocker lever 157 has a for-` wardly projecting arm which carries a cam roll 161 acted upon by a cam on the cam shaft 12 at the proper time in the cycle of the machine to rock the lever 157 and advance or retract the knife slide 153. The cutting edge of the tongue-cutting knife 151 is at such a height' that it moves practically in Contact with the under surface of the carrier, plate 18 when the carrierslide is in its inmost position and, consequently, the material forced through the die opening 23 is within itsrange c of action. The means for forcing or bulging the material of the heel-seat through the die opening for die-shaping this portion of they heelseat will nowbe described in connection with the mechanism for molding the flap split fromthe heel-seat. The machine frame isformed with verticalbearings for a plunger 171 located in line with and above the point reached by the heel-seat of the sole at the conclusion of the splitting operation. The plunger 171 carries at its lower end a-die member or bulger, shaped in armanner wellknown in lthe art, forforcing or bulging the Amaterial of the heel-seat intothe die opening. The rear face ofthe plunger is provided with rack teeth 173 which mesh with'the teeth of a gear segmenty 175 formed in the face of a rocker lever 179 ivotally mounted upon a transverse shaft 1y 7 in the machine frame. The illustrated machine comprises .one combination of suitable instrumentalities for practicing this novel method .but the method maybe carriedout by other and-different instrumentalities.Y In this connection, particular attention iscalled tothe steps of splitting the ap from the heel-seat end of a solev and' inserting lthe flap ..as formedpbetvveen molding members., rlhis procedure, withits obvious advantages, is believed to be broadly new regardless of means for; carrying it out.
