This invention relates to a perfectin web press capable of employing three we sat a time parallel with each other.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide for the supplying of the three webs to the press, printing on both sides of the webs that pass through the printing couples, and leading the webs from the press into the cutting and folding-mechanismand through to the delivery. The invention also involves improvements in details of the means for driving the cutting, collecting and folding mechanism and delivery fans,
and especially the driving of the folding and cutting cylinders absolutely positively from the printing couple and eliminating back lash which would break the web, and the driving of the drag rolls and other positiv'ely driven parts of the folding machine directly from the shaft of the collecting c linder, reducing the cost of construction. other feature of the invention consists in an alternative method of driving the delivery fans in such away that they can be reversed in a very simple manner to deliver in two directions, and also in the provision of practical means for mounting three web rolls in such close relationship to each other that they can supply the three webs to the press as near together at their in the ress.
Other objects and advantages of t e invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal sectional diagrammatic view of a double perfecting web press constructed in accordance with this invention showing original and final positions of the .web rolls;
ink from the fountain 12 through a fountain roll 13, delivering it to 'an ink cylinder 14 by a ductor roll- 17 and distributing it thereon by distributing rolls 15.- The usual form rolls 16 are shown for applying the ink to the plates. These parts, of course, are shown in four places on the particular press illustrated. The webs W are led through the printing way, being taken from three web rolls 18 at each end 1n this case. p The three webs from each end are fed inwardly toward the center through the printing couples and fed over the compensating rolls 19. For the purpose of operating the folding mechamsm in exact'unison with the printin couples, I have provided one of each pair 0 comes the main driving shaft of the collecting, folding, and delivering mechanism as well as the press if driven directly from a motor as indicated-in Fig. 3. This shaft isprovided with a sprocket and sprocket chain 25 for driving, through gears 26, two drag rolls 2? on the same shaft. There-is also a gear 28 on the shaft 23 driving the gear 29 on the shaft of the cutting cylinder30 so as to drive these two cylinders in .erfect unison as usual. The press can'be riven from a shaft 55 at the other side if desired as indicated by dotted lines in Fig; 3. The cutting cylinder shaft 31 is also provided with means for driving through a sprocket chain 32 the nipping rolls 33, and
delivering to a set adaptedto receive insuring their being driven positively in perfect unison. It is also provided with sprocket wheel and chain 34 for driving the delivery fan 35 on its shaft'36. The folding rolls 37 are driven by gears from a gear 28. In this-way all these parts are positively driven-in exact time with the press.
I have also provided'for a very simple change when it is desired to drive the fan 35 in the opposite. direction, so that instead of of delivery tapes 38 on one side of the fan, the products can be delivered to a different set of tapes 39.0n the opposite side. For this purpose the main drivin shaft 23 is-provided with a sprocket whee the chain 34.. Therefore, instead of connecting the parts upas shown in Fig. 8 just described "above the sprocket chain 34 is connected with the shaft 23 directand the fan is taken off its shaft 36and reversed thereon. I have also shown a tension roller 56 mounted on a bracket on the frame of the press for guiding the web from this web roll. In this way a simple and convenient means is provided whereby three web rolls can .be located in proper position to deliver simultaneously to a tliree web width printing machine without necessitating themaking of the printing machine of excessive width.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention and shown only a few'ways of using it, I am aware ofthe fact that modifications can be made in the relative arrangements and construction of the parts, and that the parts can be manipuw lated in other ways to lead the web through as desired without departing from the scope of the invention'as expressed in the claims. Therefore,- I do not wish to be limited in these respects but what I do claim is 1. In a perfecting web press, the'combination with two sets of printing couples, each set comprising two pairs of printlng cylinders, all of said cylinders being of a length to receive and print three separate newspaper webs simultaneously, and means for feeding three webs side by side to either set of couples separately, of a pair of folding, collecting and delivering devices, and means whereby eaclrweb from either set'of couples can be directed to either folding, collecting and de livering device.
2. In a printing press, the combination of a set of printing couples, each comprising impression and plate-cylinders of a length capable of printing simultaneously three newspaper webs separate from each'other and means for guiding each of said webs separately from the last printing couple, with a cutting, folding, anddelivering mecha- .a folding cylinder, and a shaft on whic said folding cylinder is mounted coupled directly to the end of-the shaft of one of theprintin couple cylinders.

In a printing press, the combination with a web perfecting set of printing cylinders, a folding cylinder and a cutting cylinder geared together, means for coupling the shaft of one of said cylinders directly to the shaft of one of the impression cylinders, of said couples, of a delivery fan and means for driving the delivery fan either from the shaft of the folding cylinder or the shaft of the cutting cylinder to reverse the direction of rotation of the fan.
6. In a cutting, collecting and delivering device, the combination with a folding cylinder, a cutting cylinder, and afshaft for each, and means for gearing said shafts together to cause either to rotate positively with the other, of a delivery fan shaft, a fan thereon which can be removed from the shaft and turned around to deliver on either side thereof, a sprocket chain for driving said fan, and
sprocket wheels on the folding cylinder shaft and cutting cylinder shaft respectively for resprocket chain and driving the fan.
.7. In a cutting, collecting and delivering device, the combination with a folding cylinder, a cutting cylinder, and a of a delvery fan shaft, a fan thereon which can be removed from the shaft and turnedaround to deliver onveither side thereof, a sprocket chain, for driving said fan, and sprocket wheels onthe folding cylinder shaft and cutting cylinder shaft for receiving the sprocket chain and driving the fan, the
sprocket'wheel on the folding cylinder shaft being just as much larger than the sprocket wheel on the cutting cylinder shaft as the folding cylinder is larger than the cutting cylinder, whereby the delivery fan can be driven in one direction from one shaft. and in the other direction from the other shaft at the same speed.
8. In a folder, the combination with the folding and cutting cylinders geared to-' gether, and means for driving one of them directly from a printing couple, of a delivery fan and means for driving the fan adapted to be connected with either of said cylinders.-
9. In a folder, the combination with the' folding and cutting cylinders geared to-' gether, means for. driving one of them directly from a printing couple, of a drag roll, delivery fan,'.and nipping rolls, and means for driving them from one of said cylinders.

The combination with a perfecting web press having printing couples long enough to receive and simultaneously print on three separate webs, of means for supporting a central web roll for supplying the middle web and means for supporting two side web rolls out of axial alignment therewith and the supporting means therefor being offset from the supporting means for the central roll a dis- 5 tance greater than the radius thereof but with their ends adjacent to the ends ofthe central web roll.

In a perfecting web press, the combination with two sets of printing couples, each a0 setcomprising two pairs of printing cylinders, all of said cylinders being of a length to receive and print a plurality of separate newspaper webs simultaneously, and means for feeding the-webs side by side to either set of couples separately, of a pair of foldin 7 devices having their driving shafts couple 7 directly to one of the shafts of the respective printing couples, and means whereby each web from either set of couples can be- 4o directed to either folding device.
