KNOWLES LOOM wonxs, or woncnsrnn, sinssacnusnsrs, A CORPORATION on MASSACHUSETTS COMBINED FILLING AND VIARP STOP MOTION FOR LOOMS Application filed August 1, 1927. Serial No. 209,653.
This invention relates to. combined filling and warp stop motions and it is the general object of the invention to prov1de means whereby the actuating mechanism for the warp stop motion may be used to actuate the filling stop motion. I
Patent No. 1,360,688 shows a form of knock-off motion which is generally employed in connection with my former Patent- No. 1,265,112 wherein a rocking lever is effective at the time of warp fault to move the shipper handle to loom stopping position. It is'an important objectof my present invention to utilize this actuating lever to move a part corresponding to the ordinary goose-neck or snake head of the so-called side filling. stop motion to the end that one actuator lever will be effective to stop the loom through the side filling and also warp stop motions.
Certain looms are so constructed as to have a cloth supporting board which extends far enough back from the breast beam as to have very little clearance with the lay when the latter is in its extreme forward position, thus rendering difiicultthe placing of the ordinary side fol-l; lever between the cloth board and the lay. t is a further object of my present invention to provide a side stop motion with an actuating member having a regular vibrating motion, said part passing through a portion of the lay and being outof the range of the cloth board so as to permit the latter to be as close to the lay as desired.
It a further object of my present invention to combine the filling and warp stop motions in such a way that the filling stop motion shall be effective to stopthe loomon alternate picks while the warp stop motion shall be effective to stop the loom on the intervening picks.
"i -Yith these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have shown a convenient embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a vertical section taken through a 100m. naving my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view taken in the direction'of arrow 2, Fig. 1, i i
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the actuating mechanism for. the combined warp filling stop motions, 1
.Fig. 4 is'an enlarged detail top plan View taken in the direction of arrow -1 Fig.1, and Fig. 5 is a vertical section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. I
. Referring to Figs.1,2 and 3 I have shown a loom side having in the lower portion thereof a constantly rotating driving shaft 11 to which is secured a cam 12. Said shaft has a complete. revolution in tWo picks of the loom andthe cam cooperates with a cam lever 13. fuicrumed at 14; and adjustably connected toan upright rod 15. E-
.The head for actuating part of the warp stop motion includes a supporting bracket 16 on which is adjustably mounted the frame 17 in the upper portion of which is secured a studlS. Rocking freely on said stud is the lever 19 adjustably connected to the upper end of rod 15. Hook 20 is formed on the Y lever 19 to cooperate with adog 21 pivotally mounted on the lower end of lever 22 also freely pivoted on the stud 18. v A plurality of noncircular detector rods 23 are connected together by arms 24 and link 25 to a driving rod 26. The upper ends of saiddriving rod extends through a stud 27 carried by the lever 19 and the lower end of said rod is pivoted on an arm 28 extending from the left hand link 24 as shown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the rod is free to slide through the stud 27 and a compression spring 29 is-interposed between said stud and acollar 30 adjustably held on the rod. 7
As the shaft 11 rotates the lever 19 will be rocked first in one direction and then in the other around the stud 18 so that the spring a lifting pin 32 which as shown in Fig. 3 is book approaches the dog 21 and moves said dog out of the path of the hook, but when free movement of the non-circular rods 23 is *resisted by a fallen drop wire D the arms 24 willbe held against swinging movement and the pin 32 will be in downposition so that the 7 dog 21 will remain in the path of the hook 20.
As the lever 19 moves in a left hand direction as viewed in Fig. 3 the dog and hook will engage each other and the lever 22 will be given a left hand movement to effect loom stoppage by mechanism to bedescribed. The matter thus far described is substantially the same as that shown in the aforesaid patents to Holmes and myself and forms no part of the present invention except as to the construc- [tion of the upper end of the lever 22.
A filling stop motion comprises a stand 40 or idle stroke so thatif the loom shouldbe fixed to the loom frame and having slidably mounted therein a fork carrying member 41 to the rearend of which is pivotally mounted the filling fork42. The layL is provided with a slot 48 in the upper surface thereof through which extends the forward end of a rod'44 the rear end of Which is connected to Y the oscillating lever 19 at 45. Said. rod is supported by abracket'B and has the front end thereofbent upwardly as at 46 and lies under the sliding'member 41 as shown more particularly in Figs. 4 and 5. The forward end of the fork is provided with a loop 47 which is normally in the path of the upturned end 46 of rod 44. The sliding member41 is provided with a projection'48 which lies behind the finger 49 carried on a knock-off'lever 50 pivoted to a stand 51 held on the'loom frame. Saidjlever 50 has a forwardlyextending arm 52which projects through a slot 53 in shipper rod 54 extending along the front of the. loom substantially parallel to the breast beam 55. The shipper rod 54 may be of the form, shown in Patent No. 884,614 and is effective-when moved in the direction of arrow A Fig. 4 to stop the loom, movement in the opposite'direct-ion applying the driving power to the loom to cause operation of the same.
A control rod 56 is pivotally connected at nvsaeoe weft is present the fork 42 will be swung on its pivot tomove the loop 47 above the end 46 of the rod 44and as the latter moves forwardly the slide member 41 will remain at rest. hen the filling is broken however,
the fork 42 will not berocked on its pivot and as the upturned en'd 46advances itwill engage the loop 47 and move the sliding member41 forwardly to cause theproject'ion 48 to move the finger 49 to the dotted line posiback and forth with the hook 20. So long as V tion shown in Fig. 4. This movement is 'accompanied by a movement of the shipper rod in the direction of arrow A to stop the loom.
Asinspection of the camwill show that when it is in the position shown in Fig.1 the hook 20 w1ll be completing its idle stroke while the rod 44 will be completing its work ng stroke so that should the loom be stopped because of faulty filling the lever 22 and the rod 56 will be free to move without interference on the part of the hook. Also it will be seen that on the next pick the hook 520 will have a rocking stroke while the rod 44 will'have areturn stopped on this pick by a warp fault the rod 56 can move the lever 50 while the'rod 44 is on its idle or inoperative stroke. By having the filling and warp stop motions operate on different picks I avoid any possibility of one interfering with the free action of the other.
It will be seen that the spring 29 is effec-' tive to give a yielding drive for the warp stop V motion when the actuator lever 19 rocks in one direction and that the substantially horizontal rod 44 which cooperates with the filling stop motion is driven positively from the actuator lever on alternate oscillations of the actuating lever.
From the foregolng itwill be seen that l have provided a combined filling and warp stop motion wherein the power forstopping the loom due to the instruinentality of either :of the motions is derived from a single rocking lever and that the connections are such that said lever has a rocking stroke in one direction on one pick for one of the motions and has a'rocking stroke in the other direction on the following pick for the other motion, so that there is no possibility of confusion or interference between the motions in their respective operations to stop the loom. It will further be seen that the rod 44 oscillates through a slot formed in the top ofthe the filling stop motion operate when the lay 'is in-its extreme forward position and under.
many conditions it is preferable to have the warp stop motion operate to stop the loom at the same part of the pick so that the cam may be made symmetrical to permit reversal-of.
the same on the driving of the bottom shaft. It will be understood, however, that this relation between the desirable times for stopping the loom is not essential, it being permissible to stop the loom from the warp stop motion at times other than those when the lay will be in its extreme forward position.
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is:
