DRILL Filed July 27, 1929 gwue'ni ot MMW Patented Apr. 29, 193i) STATE 12% WILLIAM W. LANDRUM, OF LEAGUE CITY,
TEXAS, Assrenon or own-1min 'r'o H. e.
MOBLEY, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS V 1' DRILL Application filed July 27,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a drill.
One object of the invention is to provide a drill of the character described preferably of the fish tail type provided with novel means for flushingthe sides of the drill to prevent the earth formation from adhering thereto.
Another object of the invention isto provide a drill of the character described which 10 is so constructed that it will be very strong and durable and not liable to be broken under the stress of the work, and which is characterized by the provision of water channels which terminate, near the lower end of the bit in transverse upwardly directed nozzles through which the drilling fluid will be dis charged and spread over the sides of the drill washing away the formation that may adhere to the drill preventing, or minimizing, the adherence of such formation to the drill.
With the above and other objects in view this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 shows a side view of the drill.
Figure 2 shows a cross sectional view taken onthe line 2-2 of Figure 1, and v Figure 3 shows a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the drill whose upper end terminates in an outwardly threaded shank 2 to receive .the drill collar by means ofwhich the drill is attached to the conventional drill stem.
The body 1 is blade-like in form and its lower end terminates in the oppositely curved cutting edges 3, 3. 7
On each side of the body there is a vertical rib 4 Whose lower end 5 is turned outwardly across said body. Said outwardly turned lower ends extend in opposite directions and terminate at the respective edges of said body.
There are the Water channels 6, (iwhich eX- tend from the upper endof the drill downwardly through ribs 4, 4t and outwardly through the outwardly turned ends 5 there 1929. Serial No. 381,546.
of. The outer ends of these channels are closed and said channels have the oblong nozzle openings 7 7 which are directed upwardly and are arranged adjacent the respective side faces of the bit body. The drilling'fiuid will be forced down through the channels 6 and discharged upwardly through the nozzles 7, 7 over that portion of the drill above. Above the respective nozzles 7, 7, the drill is provided with one, or more, openings 8 through which the cuttings may pass, as the bit rotates, thus lessening the resistance encountered, in assisting in mixing the formation with the drilling fluid so that said mixture may be more easily Washed out. A portion of the fluid from the upwardly directed'nozzles, also, will pass through the lower openings 8 so that water will be supplied to both sides of the drill all the way across.
A preferred form of the invention has been 7 disclosed in the specifications and drawings, by way of illustration only while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A drill having water channels leading downwardly therethrough from its upper end and turned laterally across the opposite sides of the drill and terminating in transverse upwardly directed discharge nozzles.
2. A drill having a fiat body whose lower ends terminate in cutting edges, said drill having fluid channels leading downwardly from the upper end thereof the lower ends of said channels being turned transversely across the body and having elongated, up-- wardly directed, nozzle openings- 3. A drill having water channels leading downwardly therethrough from its upper end and turned laterally across the opposite sides of the drill and terminating in transverse upwardly directed discharge nozzles, said drill having transverse openings therethrough on V opposite sides of'the axis of the drill.
l. Adrill having a flat body, a rib on each side of said body leading from the upper end thereof, the lower end of each rib being turned laterally, said laterally turned ends extending in opposite directions, each rib having a water channel therethrough the lat- 1 i erally turned ends of said channels terminat- 'ing in upwardly directed nozzles.
5. A drill having a. flat body, a rib on each side of said body leading from the upper end thereof, the lower end of each rib being turned laterally, said laterally turned ends extend-.
ing in opposite directions, each rib havinga Water channel therethrough the laterally turned ends of said channels terminating in upwardly directednozzles, said body having transverse openings therethrough on 0pposite sides of the axisof the drill. f r
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
