Amai 29, 1930. A H WALDE BATTERY TERMINAL Filed Aug1 28. 1928 x 'Federated Apr. .22% i930 time ALBERT E. WALDE, QF ROXBOBJOUG-H, PENNSYLVAE.
BATTERY TERMINAL Application filled August 28, 1928. Serial No. 302,575.
My invention relates broadly to electrical connectors and more particularl/ to an electrical connector for storage battery terminals.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved construction of connector for storage battery terminals by which connection may be made with a storage battery terminal Without the necessity oit aplo plying solder at the point of junction.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of storage battery terminal having means for establishing a quick detachable connection to the terminal posts ot a storage battery Where means are provided for substantially enclosing the end of the insulated covering on the ieXible conductor which leads to the terminal for preventing an attack of acid upon the conductor at its point of connection tothe battery terminal.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a solderless connector for a storage battery terminal comprising a pair of cooperating parts threaded one into the other Where provision is made for independently gripping both parts of the terminal While telescopically advancing the parts one into the other to a position Where the end of a conductor may be rigidly gripped Within the terminal for establishing good electrical connection, While protecting the conductor against the attack of acid.
My improved connection will be more fully understood from the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fi ure l is a side elevation of the connector o my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken through the connector of my invention and showing a flexible conductor eX- tending to the terminal and rigidly secured in position therein; Fig. 3 is a side View ot one part of the storagey battery terminal; I)
` Fig 4 is an end View of the part of the storage battery terminal shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an end .View of the conical shaped screu7 threaded insert employed in connection with the part of the storage battery terminal shown in Figs 3 and 4; Fig. 6 is a crosssectional View taken through the insert illustrated in Fig. and Fig. 7 is an end View of the insert.
The batter terminal of my invention is so constructe that the parts may be readily assembled or removed with respect to the cable which connects to the battery. By providing the connectoriof my invention With a plurality of attened surfaces adjacent the periphery at the end of thereof, a tool such as a Wrench may be used to grip the terminal and rotate the terminal with respect to the screw threaded insert until the insert reaches a position Within the connector. The insert for the storage battery is provided with a. socket opening in the end thereof which provides a protection for the insulation ot the conductor and establishes a selected connection between the entrance of the insert and the conductor to prevent the leakage ot acid T0 into the connector and the corrosion thereof Within the connector. The insert is provided With slotted screw threaded portions which tend to move inwardly to grip the end of the conductor as the insert is screwed into the connector. The slots in the insert terminate short of the end of the insert and are fully governed by the connector when the insert is screwed to a inal position Within the connector, thereby preventing the leakage of acid into the connector and guarding the electrical connection thus established from corrosion.
My invention will be more clearly understood by detailed reference to the drawings, wherein reference character` l designates a strap member which e-ncircles the post of a storage battery. The strap member l terminates in integal extensions 2 and 3 through which bolt member 4t passes. The bolt member 4 is provided with a head 5 and is screw threaded to receive the adjusting nut 6 by which the strap l is secured to the binding ost of the storage battery. The connector' includes the truste-conical shaped barrel portion 3 which is integrally screw threaded as represented at 8. The outer extremity ot the trusto-conical portion 3 is provided with a plurality of flattened surfaces 7 to enable the connector to be readily gripped by a Wrench 10U or tool in order that it may be rotated with respect to the insert represented in Fig. 6 until the insert is moved to a position within the truste-conical portion 3. The insert is provided with a tapered barrel portion screw threaded on the exterior thereof., as represented at 9, and at the extremity thereof a plurality of flattened surfaces 11 are provided by which the insert may be gripped while the barrel portion 3 is being rotated to move the insert to a position within the connector, the screw threads 9 engaging the screw threads 8. The insert is provided with a socket portion 12 at the end thereof which terminates in an angular walll which connects to the interior bore of the insert. Slots 10 are cut in the screw threaded portion of the bore to enable the parts of the insert to be moved under the wedge action brought about by the movement of the insert into the connector to a position where the end of cable 16 is griped and electrical connection established therewith. It will be observedthat the slots 10 extend slightly over one-half of the length of the insert so that when the insert is screwed to a limiting position within the connector, the slots are entirely closed by the connector so that no sections of the metallic cable remain exposed which can be attacked by acid.
The socket 12 forms an enclosure for the insulation 15 of a flexible cable 16, the cable extending into the insert and having the end portion thereof griped by the insert, while the endY of the insulation is protected against the attack of acid. The bored cable is initially scraped and cleaned and forced into the bore of the insert to insure a good Contact between the connector and the cable.
The terminal connector of my invention has been found to be extremely practical in its construction, and While I have illustrated the terminal in one of its preferred embodiments,
I desire that it be understood that modifications may be made and that no limitations vupon my invention are intended other than are imposed by the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
A storage battery terminal comprising a casting having a portion thereof forming a connector for a storage battery post, a frusto-conical portion on said casting having internal screw threads throughoutthe length thereof, and a truste-conical insert enclosing the end o/a cable, screw threads on said insert extending toone end thereof for engaging the internal screw threads in the frustoconical portion of said casting, said insert having a slitted portion at one end and a housing portion at the other end, the slitted p0rtion bemg spaced from the housing portion, and said iousing portion extending into the frusto-conical portion of said casting When said insert is screwed to a hmiting position therein for preventing leakage of acid into
