IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-FERRULES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,639, dated April 4, 1876; application filed February 14, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, DEXTER AVERY, of the city o f Westield, Hampden county, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Whip-Button, of which the following is a specification l My improved Whip-button7 is constructed with the braided, Woven, or knitted cover of thread turned or folded over the end of the wood or other mold into the hole for the stock, so as to make a better tinish of the ends than is made when the button is covered after be ing put on the stocks, and also to make nished buttonsindependentlyofthe stock, which cannot be done in the common way of covering them.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the partlynished button, showing the process ot' making it. Fig. 2 is a section of a button partly finished. Fig. 3 is a section of a finished button applied to a stock; and Fig. 4 is a section of a long double button on a whip-handle, showing the cover applied to the short or single buttons.

Commonly the button-molds A are fitted on the stock before it is covered, and covered at the same time that the stock is, by braiding, knitting, Weaving, 0r otherwise 5 but this does not make a good finish, and, besides, it is desirable to make iinished or covered buttons independently of the stock, because they can be colored diierently to make a contrast of colors, and it is desirable for other purposes to make and sell them separately from the stock.

I therefore put the molds A on a mandrel, B, and braid, Weave, or otherwise form the cover C o n them, and then, after taking out the mandrel and sizing the cover, turn it in at D, and press or shape it smooth and close against the inside, so as to stick fast, thus making braided, knitted, or Woven buttons...independently ot' the stock, and with nicely-iinshed ends E. In case of a long handle or double buttonpece, F, a mandrel Will tit into each end instead of going entirely through; but the cover C will be applied and finished in the salue manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An improved article of manufacture, consisting ot' a whip-button, either single or double, having a braided, knitted, or Woven cover formed upon a mold and doubled over the ends into the holes, substantially as set forth.
