A movable member is provided to serve as the inside operator which is so arranged that stopmeans operates to arrest its motion in a sc -c'alled normal position. A movable element associated `with said member can be moved relativev thereto to clear the stop means, thus permitting further movement of the inside operatorbeyond normal position. In the present instance, the inside operator comprises a rocking or lever plate designated generally as 30 which isfpivoted at to the base 10. The plate has ngers or projections which loosely encompass one arm ot the rollback 20 so as to permit a limited rocking of the plate Without aecting the roll-back.
One linger 32 acts on the roll-back shoulderV 26 to unlatch the bolt, the parts moving from the normal position of Fig. 2 into the unlatched position shown in Fig. 4. The other tinger 33 of the lever plate is arranged to be positioned out of the path of the roll-back during the above described unlatching operation'but it is further arranged to be moved into Vthe path of the roll-back for cloggingV the same.
These two positions are shown respectively in Figs. 1 and 2. Theinger 33 is provided with a straight nedge 34 which cooperates with the shoulder 27 of the rollback 20, said edge 34 being substantially perpendicular to an intersecting radius through the pivot 31. By this construction the force Vof the roll-back when vexerted on the lever plate 30 is radial and hence the plateserves,

In the present instance, the lever plate 30 is provided with a handle 35 carried on an arm 36 pivoted to the plate 30 at a point 37 intermediate the ends of the arm 36. The pivoted arm has a limited range of movement relative to the plate. The end 38 of said arm passes close to pivot 31 of the lever plate thus limiting Vits motionV in one direction, and the end oi' the arm is arranged normally to abut the upper side of the base lug 16 (Fig. 1). The arm 36 Vhas a normal relation with the platepdetermined in part by providing an obstructing lug 39 on the plate so that when moved to unlatch the bolt the arm and lever are rigid. The rnormal position is further determined by a detent mechanism' (Fig. 3) comprising a recess 4() in the plate'7 a hole 41 in the arm, a steel ball 42 to cause the hole and recess :to register and a spring 43 pressing the ball into the recess. The spring 43 is a wide leaf `anchored in the cover-'plate 12 as shown at 44 (Figs. 1 and-3).
' As a result of the above construction the control handle andarm are movable clockwise from normal positionrelative to the plate 30 byy exerting sufficient torce on the handle to move the ball 42 out of its recess against spring 43. YThis movement is limited by thearm striking the pivot 31. At'the same timefwliile in this limiting abnormal position the arm is so arranged that it renders the stop means ineffective toholdthe lever plate from entering its clogging position. In the present instance, since the end 38 of theV arm has moved to a position to the left of the lug 16 (Fig. 2) ,the arm is thus free ofthe lug and the latter no longer serves to limit the clock-V wise rotation of the combined lever plate and handle. This permits the plate 30? to rock further in a clockwise direction to bring its inger33 in a position to dog the r-oll-back 30.
The spring 28 above described is attached so as to urge the lever clockwise and is preferably secured to the arm 36.- Arfhus the spring acting through the arm at all times urges the lever plate 30 in a clockwise direction, at one time limitedby the abutment of arm 36 on lug 16 and at another time by the interlocking engagement of the clogging finger 33 or' the lever plate 30 and the shoulder 2T of the roll-back 20. c When the spring is so attached to the arm, the detent ball mechanism can be omitted, but it is preferably retained, since it assists in determining the normal position of the parts and provides a given force to be overcome in moving the inside control to dogging position.
' The device in loperation normally occupies the position shown in Fig. 1, the control handle arm extending vertically, clogging finger 33 being positioned out of the path of shoulder 27 of the roll-back 20, and the shoulder 32 on the lever plate being in conthe top of vnormal relation. TheV lever comes to rest in its normal position by the engagement of the lend 38 of arm'36 on the stop lug 16 of the base plate. yWhen it is desired to dog the mechanism against operation from the outside the handle 35 is moved in a clockwise direction f from its normal vertical position. In so moving the .handle 35 the arm 36 does not at first move about pivot 31 because it rests upon the stop lug 16 which thereby prevents such rotation. In consequence the arm 36 moves pivotally about its pivot 37 .onthe plate 30.
. This movement takes place against the spring 28' and also against the spring 43 which normally holds the cause the arm and ball 42 in a position to plate to maintain the the clockwise rotation 38 of said arm slides along the lug 16 and near the limit of its motion it slips oil the lug 16 permitting the lever and plate to move again as an integral body about the lf plate or lever pivot 31.
