ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 22, 1930 PATENT oFFicE SAMUEL J. SMYTH, 0F HAWTHORNE, CALIFORNIA CLOSURE CAP Application filed July 5, 1927. Serial No. 203,489.
My invention relates to closure caps for containers, such as milk bottles, cheese .boxes, or any form of container where the caps are formed of paper, cardboard or other material.
It is a purpose of my invent-ion to provide a closure cap of the above described character which eliminates the employment of any instrument 1n removing the cap from 'the container by the provision of projections an the cap adapted to be gripped by the hand and actuated to flex the cap to a released position with respect to the mouth of the container.
I will describe only one form of closure cap embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a view showing in edge elevation. one form of closure cap embodying my in- V vention in applied position to a milk bottle.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the closure cap in top plan and in applied position to a milk bottle.
Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the cap in released position.
Fig. 5 is a vertical, sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in each of the several views.
Referring specifically to the drawings, my invention, in its present embodiment, comprises a disk-shaped body 15 of cardboard or any other suitable material capable of being manually flexed, and of such diameter mouth so that the subsequent removal of the cap from the bottle can be readily effected.
In practice the cap is removed from the bottle mouth by placing the thumb and finger against the outer sides of the ribs 17 and pressing until the edges of the cap at the sides of the ribs rise from the sides of the bottle mouth when the cap can be removed without danger of spilling its contents. To again seal the bottle, the cap can be replaced by pressing its edges down flat until the previous condition is attained.
A cap constructed in accordance with my invention obviously eliminates the use of an instrument to effect its removal from a container, and in removing the cap it is not distorted or otherwise impaired in respect to its further use in sealing the contents of the container.
Although I have herein shown and described only one form of closure cap embodyingmy invention, it is to be understood that varlous changes and modifications may be pressed together to cause upward flexing of the edges of the body.
2. A closure cap comprising a body of flexible material adapted, when in the mouth ofa container, to be engaged at its edges and retained in closing position within the mouth, and spaced protuberances on the body for flexing the body to cause portions of its edges to move outwardly and thus free themselves to allow removal of the body' from the mouth.
