CONTAINER Filed April 12, 1926 Patented Apr. 22, 1930 FATEN?!" JAMES EDW. GUN TIER, F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND CONTAINER Application filed April 12,
My invention relates to new and useful ims provements in closures for containers and more particularly to one in which the cap retaining means may be readily removed without destroying the further usefulness of the cap or container.
An object of the invention is to provide a sealed container which may be economically manufactured; and which can be readily and easily opened without the use of any tool, and a cap which after the container is opened may be satisfactorily used for closing the container while the contents are being used.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a container with a double friction seal closure.
Another object of my invention is to make such a container in which the retaining ring acts as a prying means to release one of the friction seals.
Another object of my invention is to make such a container in which the retaining ring has upon the container body means to holdit in its position.
Another object of my invention is to make such a container in which the means used for bending the cap over the retaining ring may be continuous peripherally, and in which the container itself requires no prior configurations to be made upon its surface for receiving the projecting handle of the retaining ring.
Further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view on line 11 of Figure 2. a
Figure 2 is a partial front view of the container as assembled with its cap and retaining ring. V Figure 3 is a partial cross sectional view on line 33'of Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a partial front view of another. modification of the retaining ring and of the means for holding it in place.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The container body 1 has its walls substantially vertical, with a ridge 2 adjacent its mou h 1) Opening. Slightly below the ridge 1926. Serial No. 101,310.
2 is a second ridge 3 running parallel to the first ridge around the body of the container. Ridge 3 might take the form of projections 4 as shown in Figures 3 and 4;.
Surrounding the container and between ridges 2 and 3 retaining ring 5 is placed and it has a handle 6 projecting from its path downwardly from under the container closure lip.
The projecting portion of the handle 6 is curved inwardly as shown at 7.
The cap 8 has double friction seals 9 and 10 with the upper edge of the container mouth. The inner lower shoulder of the cap is of substantially the same shape as the inner portion of the handle 7. The closure has a portion 11 which extends out over the retaining ring 5. In assembling this modification the ring is first placed in its groove, and the cap placed in the container and seaming rolls or other means are used to bend the cap in against the container and retaining ring and to press the lowermost edge 12 of the cap under the retaining ring. Lip 12 slightly overlaps the projecting ridge 3 as shown in Figure 1. When the tool used to bend the lip 12 inwardly comes in contact with the handle 6 of the retaining ring it forces the portion 7 of the handle inwardly and distorts the container wall as shown in Figure 1 bending the projection 3 at that point in a curve reverse from that in which it had previously been.
vThe portion of the container body back of the portion 7 of the handle is then in contact with the inner portion of the container cap. This construction enables uniform tools to be used and does not require a previous indenting of the container or a previous thinning of the projecting portion of the handle, nor does it require a weakening of the outer lip 12 of the cap by making it discontinuous in its lateral ring surrounding course. The upper part cf the container cap may present an inverted V shape 14 to the top of the container mouth or opening, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Upon replacing the cap after opening the container, the inner inwardly sloping cap wall makes a tight seal with the container mouth.
In the modification shown in Figures 3 and 4 the cap 13 has a longer inner friction seal which extends below the retaining ring. In this modification the projections below the ring are spaced peripherally around the container body, and they are pointed as indicated in Figure 4, so that upon putting the ring upon the container should the projecting handle initially rest upon one projection its pointed surface will tend to cause the ring to creep around the body of the container until the handle is between two projections. In this modification also the handle has a thinned portion 5 at the point of its juncture with the ring which permits the bending tool to pass freely longitudinally around the retaining ring. This modification also does not require an indenting of the container by the retaining ring handle.
To remove the cap in either modification the handle is pulled outwardly thus bending up the lip 12 of the cap and breaking the outer friction seal 10. When the lip extends over the projection 3 as'shown in Figures 1 and :2 the outward leverage on the handle is greater in its bending moment upon the lip and the ring pulls out more'readily. After initially pulling the handle outwardly the ring is pulled outwardly and around the container thus removing it and breaking the outer seal and the cap may be then readily 3O removed.
The retaining ring may be made of any material or it may have any cross section desired, its only requirement being that it hold its form under the stresses to which it is subjected, and that it have sufficient tensile strength to be pulled out.
The only requirement of the container is that it be sufficiently tough and flexible in its walls to permit the projecting portion 7 of 40 the handle to be pressed into its side wall.
@ As many changes might be made in the above arrangements and as many variations might be made without departing from the V scope of the invention, it is intended that all the features herein described or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be inter preted as illustrative, and that the invention be limited only by the following claims.
