This invention relates generally to the pickling industry with special reference to means for preparing brine solutions used inv this industry. The main object of this invention 1s to enable the packer to prepare his brlne solutions with the expenditure of the least amount of tank, or the necessity of carrying these bags up ladders or stairways.
These, and other objects, will become more apparent from the specification following as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which: j
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus. Figure 2 is a vertical section through the mixing tank taken along the line 22 in Figure 1. Figure 3 is a plan of the storage tank. Figure 1 is a section through the three-way valve.
Similar numbers of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is illustrated the usual elevated storage tank 10 from which brine can flow by gravity through an outlet pipe 11 and be distributed through the hose 12 to the various barrels 13, under the control of the valve 14. V
The object in having the tank 10 elevated is to provide a sufficient head to the brine to make it possible to quickly refill the barrels 13 as the brine is absorbed and evaporated.
In addition to the above described apparatus there is added the mixing tank 15 provided with a closure 16 which may be clamped in place by means of the hinge clamps 17 making the tank 16 pressure tight when desired.
Within the tank 15 is a cylindrical screen 18 whose top 19 is closed and whose lower end is provided with an outlet pipe 20 which opens into an ejector 21 whose discharge pipe 22 is provided with a check valve 23, said pipe discharging into the tank 10, preferably in the manner shown in Figure 3, namely with its tip 24 along the outer side of the tank 10 for the purpose of imparting a whirling motion to the water and more completely mixing the solution, or rather providing a uniform degree of saturation throughout the entire vol ume of brine. The inlet pipe 25 of the ejector 21is connected to one port of a three-way valve 26, from which valve apipe 27 connects with the mixing tank-15 and a third pipe 28 connects with a water meter 29 whose pipe 30 connects with the pressure water system. 66
The operation of the device is as follows:
If itis desired to produce a given number of gallons ofbrme of a certain strength, the re:
quired amount of salt is-measured out and deposited within the mixing tank 15 around the sides of the screen 18. The closure 16 is then put in place and water is admitted to the tank 15 by means of the valve 26, the meter 29, of
course, being read to enable the operator to control the amount of water passing through 70 the apparatus. Before't-he desired amount of water has passed through the meter, the threeway valve 26 is turned in a manner to cut off the flow through the pipe 27 and to allow same to flow through the pipe 25, causing the ejector 21 to draw whatever water remains within the tank 15 and to discharge same into the tank 10. In order to make it possible to withdraw this Water from the tank 15' it is necessary to provide an air valve 31 which can be opened to allow the air to escape when water first enters the tank 15 and closed as soon. as the tank 15 is filled with water, and again re-opened when the water is being withdrawn by the ejector.
There are, of course, numerous ways in which this task can be accomplished, there being illustrated only one form of the apparatus representing the preferred form of the invention. 90

In a brine mixing apparatus the combination of a mixing tank having a screened well formed therein, a removable closure for said tank, an ejector arranged to draw liquids I from said screened well, a three-Way valve having one side discharging into said tank, a'second side discharging into said ejector anda third side connected to a :water supply means for measuring the Water passing through said three-way valve, and means for storing the liquid dischargedirom sai'dejector.

In a. brine mixing apparatus the combination of a mixing tank with a storage tank elevated above said mixing tank, a pipe for supplying Water to said mixing'tank, a pipe connecting the bottom of said mixing tank with said storage tank, and valve means for a controlling the flowof water through said 39 mixingitank'into saidstora'ge tank, consisting of a three-Way valve having one discharge side opening into said mixing: tank, together Withan ejector having one intakeside communicating with the three-way valve and the other intake side communicating ;with said mixing-tank and having the'disch-arge side communicating with said storage tank.
