This invention relates to improvements in car construction. V
One object of the invention is to provide means for connecting the body and truck bolsters of a railway car, including a sectional center pin member composed of a plurality of plate-like elements having shouldered engagement at opposite ends with the body and truck holsters, respectively.
Another object of the invention is to provide a center locking pin arrangement for body and truck holsters having center pin receiving openings, wherein the connecting pin comprises a plurality of plate-like sections which may be readily attached to or removed from the holsters, as desired, the plate-like sections being adapted to be assembled in succession with the holsters and forming, when assembled, a complete pin member, headed at opposite ends, having shouldered engagement with the holsters to prevent separation of the same, the openings in the holsters being of such a shape asy to permit insertion of the plate-like members in one position, the plate.n like members being rotatable about the axis of the assembled pin to bring all of the sections thereof into shouldered engagement with the holsters, locking means being provided to prevent relative rotation of the assembled pin and one of the holsters to hold said sections against disengagement from the shoulders of the holsters.

The body holster is provided with a hollow, sleevelike section 12 which receives the upper portion of the locking center pin and a depending annular hearing member 13 cooperating 5 with an annular bearing seat 14 formed in a hearing plate 15 seated in a pocket 16 at the top of the truck bolster 11, a filler or shim member 17 being interposed between the hearing plate 15 and the top of the bolster 11. The bolster 11 is provided with a. center pin receiving opening 18 and the hearing plate 15 and shim member 17 are also provided with openings aligned with the opening 18 and the opening of the sleeve section 12 of the body bolster. v

The four sectional plate-like members 1.9-19 and 20-20 of the pin are of similar design, but the plate-like members 20 are ot' greater width than the members 19. Each plate-like member comprises a` main body portion of substantially rectangular cross section which is elongated so as to form a shank portion of the pin. At the opposite ends, each plate is provided with a paiizof aligned laterally projecting lugs 21-21, the lugs at each end forming in effect a head portion. As shown in Figure 1, the head portions 21 at the upper ends of the plate members cooperate with the flat end face of the sleeve-like section of the bolster 10, thereby supporting the assembled members which form the center locking pin A against downward movement. The head portions 21 at the opposite ends of the plate cooperate with the bottom face of the middle section of the truck bolster in a similar manner so as to prevent upward movement of the pin and hold the same assembled `with the body and truck holsters and lock the holsters together.
As clearly illustrated in Figure l, the aligned center pin receiving openings of the body and truck holsters are of the same diameter and each opening has the side wall at diametrically opposite portions slotted, as i' dicated at 22-22. The slots or openings are of such a Width as to permit the head sections 2l of the plate .members 20 to pass freely therethrough in assembling tnev plate members with the holsters. As most clearly illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, the slots 29 are to one side of the diametrical center plane of the pin receiving openings of the holsters.
. As herona' ter more clearly pointed out, the slots Q2 are offset to one side of the center of the openings in therbolsters to facilitate insertion of the plate member 20, which is last applied in assembling the pin and which plate member in effect forms a key plate.
The two locking blocks B are provided to preventrotation of the sectional locking pin A after theparts thereof have been assembled and the pin is in the position shown in the drawings. Vhen it is desired to remove the sectional locking pin so that the holsters may be separated, it is merely necessary to irst remove the locking blocks B and then rotate the locking pin A through an angle of ninety degrees to bring one of the plates 20 in alignment with the slots 22. rllhe plate 20 may then be driven out and the remaining plates displaced laterally so as to bring the same in alignment with the slots 22 and the latter may then he driven out in a similar manner.
IVhile I have herein shown and described what I consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications which come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters provided with aligned center pin receiving. openings; of a sectional locking pin connecting said bolsters, said pin comprising a plurality of sections each headed at opposite ends and said heads at opposite ends of each section having shouldered engagement with said holsters, respectively, to prevent removal of the pin and sepa ration of the holsters.
2. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters provided with aligned center pin receiving openings; of a sectional locking pin connecting said bolsters, said pin comprising a plurality of plate-like sections each headed at opposite ends and having shouldered engagement with said bolsters, respectively, to prevent removal of the pin and separation of the bolsters, said plates including a key plate member headed at opposite ends, said key plate member being insertible between the remaining plates, the locking pin receiving openings of the holsters being formed of a cross section to permit insertion of said locking key plate, when in one position, said sectional pin being rotatable to displace said key plate and the headed portions thereof to bring the latter in shouldered engagement with the holsters.
3. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings, the walls deining said openings being slotted at opposite sides; of a sectional locking pin connecting said bolsters, said locking pin including a plurality of plate-like sections and a key plate member, said plate-like sections and key plate member being headed at opposite ends, said head portions having shouldered engagement with the body and truck bolsters, respectively, said key plate member being insertible through the slotted sections of the walls of the pin receiving openings between said plate-like sections to spread the same apart, and said sectional pin, when assembled,

5.- In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings of circular cross section,the walls defining said openings being slotted at opposite sides; of a sectional locking pin connecting said bolsters, said locking pin including a plurality of platelike sections of substantially rectangulark cross section, anda key plate also of substantially rectangular cross section, said plate sections and keyv plate being headed at opposite ends, said head portions having shouldered engagement with the body and truck bolsters, respectively, said key plate being insertible through the slotted sections of the Walls of the pin receiving openings between the plate-like sections to spread the same apart and said sections of the pin, when assembled, being rotatable to bring the head portions of all of the sections thereo'tl in shouldered engagement with said body and truck holsters.
6. In car construction, the combination with body and truck holsters having aligned center pin receiving openings of circular cross section, the walls defining said openings being slotted at opposite sides; of a sectional locking pin connecting said bolsters, said locking pin including a plurality of plate-like sections of substantially rectangular cross section and a key plate also of substantially rectangular cross section, said plate sections and key plate being headed at opposite ends, said head portions having shouldered engagement with the body and truck bolsters, respectively, said key plate being insertible through the slotted sections of the walls of the pin receiving openings between the platelike sections to spread the saineapart and saidsections of the pin, when assembled,y being rotatable to bringy thev head portions of all of thesections thereof inshouldered engagef lnent With said body and truck holsters; and locking members fitting between the outer plates'orniing the sectional lockingv pin and thejxv'alls of the corresponding pin receiving opening and having lugs seated in' said Slots toprevent turning of the locl'iing blocks in said pin receiving opening.
