This movement will continue until the outer end of the slot 18 engages the pin 17 or until the inner end of the guide sleeve 14 surrounding-the feed screw contacts with the end of the sleeve 22 surrounding the forwardend of the feed screw. In either event, the retracting movement of the eraser sleeve is arrested and the further rotation of the finger piece thereby becomes cfiective through the pin 15 to turn the feed screw and retract the lead carrier.
In the reverse or right handed rotation of the finger piece, with the eraser and lead car- 7 rier both retracted, it will be seen that the first effect of the rotationwill be for .the
eraser sleeve to screw itself outwardly over the feed screw and that when the end of this movement is reached, that is, when the pin 15 contacts the stop 23'on the feed screw or the pin 17 is engaged by the inner end of slot 18, rotation will be imparted to the feed screw and the lead carrier will be thereby projected.
In the species illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 the eraser 12 may bemounted in the outer cylindrical end of a sleeve 22, the inner end of which is reduced and squared to have a sliding fit over the square member 23 rigidly fastened to the operating member 10. A pin 24 projects from the sleeve 22 and engages in a helical groove 25 formed in the inner wall of the finger piece 26. 'For convenience in manufacture the finger piece 26 is shown as composed of an inner collar 27, having groove 25 cut through its wall, and an outer collar. 28 longer than the inner collar. The finger piece 26 is rotatably attached to the body 6 in the same manner as the finger piece of Figs. 1 and 2.
With the parts in the relation indicated in motion device, whereby when the operating member is rotated in one direction the eraser is projected and thereafter the lead is projected; and in the other direction, the lead is first retracted and thereafter the eraser is retracted.

A pencil comprising a case, an operating-member revoluloly mounted at one end thereof, a lead carrier projectible at the other end of the case, operating means for the lead carrier including a helical member and a lost motion device, an eraser sleeve arranged to project an eraser at the end of the case adj acent the operating member, a pin and slot connection between the operating member and eraser carrier, and a connection between the eraser carrier, and the lead carrier operatingmeans through the lost motion device,
whereby when the operating member is rotated in one direction the eraser is projected and thereafter the lead is projected; and in the other direction the lead is first retracted and thereafter the eraser is retracted.

Fig. 4 both eraser and lead are in retracted positions. Upon rotating the finger piece right handedly the groove 25 will push the pin 24 toward the left, thereby moving the sleeve 22' toward the left and causing it to slide over the nut 23, simultaneously projecting the eraser. When the pin 24 reaches the end of slot- 25, further rotation of the finger piece will turn the operating member 10 through the square member and cause projection of the lead. Operating the finger piece in the reverse direction will first retract the eraser and then the lead.

A pencil comprising a case, an operating member revolubly mounted at one end thereof, a lead carrier projectible at the other end of the case, operating means for the lead carrier including a helical member and a lost motion device, an eraser carrier arranged to project an eraser at the end of the case adjacent the operating member, a combined rotary and slidable connection between the operating member and eraser carrier, and a connection between the eraser carrier and the lead carrier operating means through the lost
