IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR FINISHING BOOT AND SHOE HEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,497, dated March 28, 1876; application filed December 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHREsTIAN E. RAM- LOSE, of the city and county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Finishing Heels of Boots and Shoes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs.
My improvement relates to a machine having rotating wheels for forming and polishing the outer side of the heels. Combined with one of the wheels is a gas -jet, by which it is heated, to impart the proper temperature to the composition used in polishing the heel.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the jack part in section. Fig. 3 is an axial section of the polishingwheel.
A is the frame of the machine, having a longitudinal bar, B, supporting the jack by which the boot is held while the heel is subjected to the action of the dressing and polishing wheels or disks. 0 is a carriage having a sliding adjustment on the bar B, and secured in place by a set-screw, D, whose end may slide in a longitudinal groove in the bottom of bar B. E is a lever fulcruined at e in ears F, and whose outer end or handle is pressed upward by a spring, G, beneath it, and held down, when required, by a hook or other suitable device, H. I is a pivot-pin or stud on the top of the lever E, on which the jack is held by a socket, J, in which the pivotpin is received. Thejack has two upwardlyextending arms, K and L. The arm K has at top a horizontal socket, k, in which rests a spindle, M, thrust toward the arm L by a spiral spring, N, recessed in the socket k, and resting against a collar, m, of the spindle to push it forward. This spindle has a head, m, furnished with a spike, which rests against the outside of the heel to prevent it'slipping while being acted on by the finishing-wheels. ing horizontally and furnished with a turning head, 0, which rests against the inner side of the heel, and which may be supplied with spikes 0, to pre-' vent the slippingof the heel upon it. P l? are standards giving journal-bearing to the shaft Q, which is turned by a pulley, q. Upon this shaft is a grinding wheel or stone, R, by which the heel may be shaped upon its outside, the heel being held between the heads m and o, and which may be freely turned with the heads, so as to present all its whole edge to the action of the wheels. S is a metallic wheel, whose periphery may be milled so as to present a somewhat roughened surface to the heel, for the application of the polishing composition to the heel. One side of this wheel has an annular recess, 8, into which enters a lighted jet of gas to impart heat to the wheel without impingement against the periphery of the wheel or the heel. The jetburner is shown at T, and by regulating the escape of the gas the heat may be regulated as required. U is a wheel-brush or wheel covered with any material suitable for cleaning and buffing the heel.
In use, the jack may be arranged in position for the application of the heel to any one of the wheels, or two or more jacks may be used at the same time by different operators, the boot-heels being first applied to the wheel It, next ,to S, and then to U.
I claim 1. The improved jack, consisting of arm K, provided with socket is, spindle M, and spring N, and the arm L, provided with a stud, O, and turning head 0, as and for the purpose set forth. v
2. The lever E, journaled in ears F of the sliding carriage 0, spring G, and hook H, in combination with jack K L M O, as and for the purpose set forth.
