Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
HENRY POTTIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN FARE-REGISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,496, dated March 28, 1876; application filed July 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY POTTIN, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Gar-Fare Receiver, Register, and Signal, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists of a double box, which is carried in the hand of the conductor, or suspended from his person by a strap or other suitable device. One part of the box is for receiving and containing the fares, the other contains the registering and announcing mechanisms.
Figure l is a plan view of the box, the lid being open to exhibit the mechanisms. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the registering mecl1- anism. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the actuating-bar and return-spring. Fig. 4 is a reduced plan view of the exterior ofthe box.
The box A is divided by the partitionB into the compartment 0 for containing the fares, which are passed in at the hopper D. and taken out at the bottom through a latch or other secured door, E. The other compartment, F, contains the mechanisms for registering and announcing the fares taken. The mechanisms, two in number, are entirely alike in the construction and operation of the several parts, with the single exception of the signals. A thumb-lever, G, is jointed to a reciprocating bar, H, a pawl, I, of which is held in intimate contact with a ratchet-wheel, J, of a wheel, K, whose teeth a take into the notches Z) of a numbered band, L, which also passes around a similarly-notched wheel, K. The band is in this instance numbered from 1 to 39.
When a full fare is received and deposited in the compartment 0, the conductor, by an upward pressure, vibrates the lever G, which lowers the bar H, and causes the pawl I to advance the wheel J one tooth, when, by reason of the contact of the toothed wheel K and the band L, it is advanced one number, which exhibits through an opening in the side of the box, (shown by the dotted lines 0, Fig. 2.) The lowering of the bar H butts its lever M against the leg d of the shank e, and springs its hammer on the bell M.
The I thumb-lever G and the bar H are returned, when the pressure of the conductors hand is removed from the lever, bya spiral spring, N, which is lodged beneath the bar, and has its ends attached to the upper guide-pin g and the stud h of the bar. One revolution of the band L moves the ratchet O and numbered wheel P one tooth, by means of a nib, t, depending t'rom the band far enough to contact with a tooth of the ratchet, so that the number of fares taken can be readily had by'multiplying the number on the band L and the number on the ring 0, as exhibited through the openings in the edge of the box.
The ringing of the bell announces the taking of a full fare. The announcing .ot' the taking of a part fare is by the prolongation of the bar H, in its descent by the lever G, contacting with a sounder, Q, which produces a clicking noise. The sounds produced by the bell and the click are heard through apunctured face, R, of the box-door S.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the lever G, bar H, pawl I, ratchet-wheel J, toothed wheels K K, and the band L, as shown and described.
2. The double box A, in combination with the lever G, bar H, pawl I,Vratchet-wheel J, toothed wheels K K, and the band L, as shown and described.
3. The combination of the band L and the ratchetand numbered wheel 0 P, as shown and described.
4. The combination of the band L and the nib or projection t, as shown and described.
5. The combination of-the lever Gr, bar H, and the sounder Q, as shown and described.
6. The combination of the lever G, bar H, trip-lever M, bell and hammer M 6, spring N, pawl I, wheels J J K, and the band L, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
