Description

UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ORREN W. MASSEY, OF MACON, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-GINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [75,481, dated March 29, 1876; application filed January 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORREN W. MAssEY, of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Gills; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cotton-gins; and it consists in securing to the pressure-board of the roll-box a number of strips,-flanges, or other devices, which diverge slightly from the bottom toward each end, and which are to be used, in connection with the ribs already patented by me, for the purpose of forcing the cotton from the center of the box evenly toward each end, as will be more fully described hereinafter;
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the ribs, and c the pressure board of a roll-box for cotton-gins. The ribs are made to flare, from the central one toward each end, as shown, for the purpose of distributing the roll evenly toward each end of the box. Secured to the pressure-board a are a number of strips, flanges, or other equivalent devices, (1, which correspond with the inclination of, and form a continuation of, the ribs. As these strips flare toward each end from the center on a line with the ribs, the two together exert a constant pressure upon the revolving cotton-roll, so as to force the cotton along toward each end of the box, and away from the center, and thereby cause an even distribution of the roll throughout its length.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a cotton-gin, the combination of the flaring ribs a, presssure-board a, and strips or flanges d, the strips d being made to flare toward each end of the box on a line with the flare of the ribs, whereby the cotton is evenly distributed toward each end of the box, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of December, 1875.
OBREN WEBB MASSEY.
