1o 1y heated, with consequent flooding and some times with serious results.
This invention is designed to overcome the defects noted above, and objects of this invention are to provide a temperature actuated automatic control valve which is applicable to the control of gasoline stoves and to other analogous uses, and which is so made that it is necessary to heat the generator tube and an associated member before gasoline or other fuel can-pass to the generator and main burner, so that there is no possible chance of flooding the burner or, in other words, allowing fuel to pass thereto before the generator tube has been sufficiently heated.
Further objects are to provide an automatic device which functions without any thought on the part of the operator, which is relatively simple and easy to install, which is so constructed that an expansible liquid or gas, which will hereinafter be referred to as fluid, is employed to actuate a control valve for the fuel flow so that when a suficient temperature has been obtained, the fluid will expand and actuate the control valve to permit the passage of fuel, and which will close the valve if the main burner goes out.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
The single figure is a diagrammatic view showing the device in section as applied to a burner. V
The burner chosen for illustration is for a gasoline or similar stove, but it is obvious that the invention is applicable to other uses,
for instance, it may be used in connection with a gas stove without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that a generator tube 1 of conventional construction has been illustrated as provided with a control wheel 2. This tube is connected at one endto a burner 3. The burner may be in any position desired adjacent the tube 1, but for the sake of simplicity of illustration, has been shown as indicated in the drawing.
The other end of the generator tube 1 is connected by means of a pipe 4 with the outlet port 5 of the control device. The inlet port 6 of the control device is connected to a suitable source of fuel by means of the pipe 7. The ports 5 and 6 are preferably formed in a portion of the bracket 8 of the stove, as shown, and a valve stem 9 passes into the bracket and is packed by means of the packinggland 10 and the packing 11. This valve is provided with a conical or other shaped end 12 which cooperates with a valve seat formed at the port or duct 5.
The apparatus is provided with a prim ing or heating cup 18 which may be supplied with fuel in any suitable manner as by means of a pipe 14: to initially heat the generator tube 1. The priming cup is located beneath the tube 1, and an expansion chamber 15 or expansion member is positioned adjacent the tube 1 so that it will also be heated by the flame from the priming cup. This tube 15 contains gas or liquid which is expansible and which actuates a diaphragm 16. The diaphragmis carried sealed within a casing 17 secured to the expansion member 15. This sealing may be by means of a head 18 screw threaded into the casing and clamping the diaphragm securely in place. The'head 18 is provided with an apertured boss 19 through which a bearing plunger 20 projects. This plunger is provided with a head 21 on its inner end which contacts with the diaphragm. The outer end of the plunger bears against the bracket 8. The head 18 is provided with one or more lugs 22 which are pivotally joined to the bracket by means of the pivot pin A spring 24 urges the entire device downwardly, such spring being interposed. between the expansion member or chamber 15 and the bracket 8, as shown. The casing 1'? is provided with a lug 25 which is connected by means of a short link 26 with. the upper end of the valve stem 9.
In using the device, the requisite amount of fuel is placed in the priming cup 13 or supplied to such cup by means of the pipe 14. This fuel is ignited and heats the generator tube and at the same time heats the member 15. This'causes the diaphragm 16 to bow to the left, as viewed in the drawing, and thus forces the plunger 20 outwardly with refer ence to the boss 19. This causes the casing and expansion member to rock upwardly and thus draws the valve 9 upwardly away from its seat and allows fuel to pass to the generator tube and from thence to the burner.
'As long as the burner is in operation, the valve is held open, as there is sufficient heat from the burner to continuously heat the generator tube and the member 15. However, if the burner should become extinguished for any cause, the fluid in the member 15 will contract, thereby closing-the fuel valve. Further, it is impossible to supply fuel to the burner until a sufficient heating of the generator tube has occurred, with consequent heating of the member 15.
It will be seen that the device is very simple and is easy to produce and thoroughly reliable in operation.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention maybe variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is'to be determined as claimed.
We claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a burner, a generator tube connected thereto, fuel supply means for said generator tube, a plunger valve controlling said fuel supp'lymeans,an elongated tubular member adapted to contain an expansible fluid located adjacent said generator tube, a priming cup for heating said generator tube and said tubular member, a casing carrying said tubular member and :pivotally supported from astationary point, a bearing face adjacent said casing, a diaphragm mounted within said casing, and a plunger mounted between said diaphragm and said bearing face, said valve being connected to said casing.
2. In a stove, the combination of a stationary bracket, a valve mounted within said bracket, fuel supply means connected tosaid valve and controlled thereby, a generator pipe connected to said valve, a burner connected to said generator pipe, a priming cup mounted below said generator tube, a tubular member adapted to contain an eXpansible fluid and positioned adjacent said priming cup and said generator tube, a casing pivot ally supported from said bracket and rigidly carrying said member, a link connecting said casing and said valve, a diaphragm carried within said casing, and a plunger interposed between said diaphragm and said bracket,
cousin.
