This invention relates to a novel handle attachment adapted for use in securing a handle to various articles, such as a brush, mop, etc.

The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective method of attaching a handle to such devices in a manner which provides a very strong attachment which does not become loose with use of broken with abuse.

The usual method of attaching the handle to such devices is to out a thread on the end of the handle, which is usually of Wood, and screwing the same into a threaded hole in the device. lVhile this is a simple means of attaching the handle, it is open to some objections. The cutting of the thread on the wood handle weakens the same at the point where the greatest strain comes in using the device.

Also the threads tend to become worn, from frequent removals of the handle, and also to become loose from shrinkage. This results not only in the handle becoming loose but when subjected to abuse or when hit against the floor, etc., but the handle frequently breaks off at the point where it is screwed into the brush.

I overcome this and other objections by avoiding any threaded connection between the handle and brush and by providing a metal strip, which is permanently secured to the handle, and which is shaped to extend partially around or across the back portion of the brush. Furthermore, the back portion of the brush is grooved to receive this metal strip, which fits snugly in this groove, and which is secured in place by a stud or bolt passing through the brush and provided with a wing-nut, or other suitable fastening, by means of which the strip is securely held in place in the groove. The end of the handle is also preferably reinforced by a ferrule and the three parts, the handle end, the ferrule and the strip, are firmly secured together by rivets or bolts passing therethrough, as will be shown more in detail hereinafter in corn nection with the description of the embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a brush back of conventional form is shown at 1. At bolt 2 is passed through the back 1, with its threaded end extending outwardly and provided with a wing-nut 8. The handle 4 is slotted at its end and a metal strip 5 secured in this slotted end. This strip 5 is formed to conform to the shape of theback of the brush and is seated i in a groove 6 which extends around the upper part thereof. This groove 6 is of such width and depth to permit a snug fit for the strip 5 when seated therein. It will thus be seen that this extended portion of the metal strip 5 seated in the groove 6 is snugly engaged throughout its length by the side walls of the groove and is prevented from turning relatively to the brush-back independently of the fastening bolt 2, which thus serves only to hold the parts together while the torsional stress is taken care of by the side walls of the groove, providing a rigid connection between the parts.

The end of the handle 4, which is slotted to receive one end of the strip 5, is provided with a ferrule 7 which encloses both the handle end and the end of the strip 5. Bolts or rivets, indicated at 8 and 9,secure the three parts tightly together, as described and shown.

The end of the strip 5 which is positioned in the groove 6 is provided with an opening slightly larger than the bolt 2, enabling the same to be placed over the bolt and secured in position in the groove 6 by the wing-nut 3. The handle preferably extends at an angle from the brush, as shown, and may be easily reversed in position by removing the wingnut 3, which permits the handle to be removed from the brush and reversed in position thereon, as will be seen from a reference to the drawings.

In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4;, the construction is similar to that just described in connection with Figs. 1 and 2,

except that the metal strip 5 is provided with an elongated opening 10 through which the bolt 2 passes, this bolt 2 being preferably set at an angle, as shown.

This not only provides for the removable and reversible feature of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 but also provides fol adjustment of the angular position of the handle on the brush, as indicated in dotted 10 lines in Fig. 4. This is desirable in many cases with various kinds of brushes and other devices with which this attachment is adapted to be used for various purposes, as will be apparent.
