Description

April 15, 1930. J. P. PICKETT 1,754,570
FLASH LIGHT Filed Feb. 19, 1929 Inventor Q By A iiomey Patented Apru 15, 1930 STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN, P. PICKETT, OF CAMDEN, SOUTH CAROLINA.
FLASH LIGHT Application filed February 19,1929. Serial No. 341,253.
riefiy stated the invention comprises a finger ring provided with a socket for the bulb, a portable battery to be carried on the person, a flexible current suppl cable attached. to the battery and provided on its opposite end with a terminal socket, and
a novel slip joint connection between the sockets and the finger ring socket.
My principal aim is to generally improve upon inventions of this particular classification by providing an article which is char- ?Zfl acteriaer by greater compactness, convenience and simplicity in construction and arrangement and whch may be comfortably attached to the finger in a position where it may be con-- veniently and expeditiously used while allowing full freedom of use of the hand on which the light is mounted.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view'showing the complete appliance and the manner in which it is worn.
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing cerbring out the relationship. In the drawings, the reference character 3 designates a portable dry cell battery rovide'd with customary terminals 4. This attery is of a size and shape to permit it to be conveniently carried in one pocket. The terminals 5 on one end of the cable 6 are connected with the complemental ,battery terminal. On the opposite end of the cable, as seen more clearly in Figure 2 is a terminal socket 7 which includes the spring pressed contact element 8. This socket terminates in a suitably bent retaining annulus 9.
The flash light per se comprises a finger ring 10. This embraces the inner joint of the the bulb'12. The (gist of the invention is obtain of the details on an enlarged scale to tei yhand the flash light per se.
index finger as shown in Figure 1. At the top it is provided with an integral outstanding socket 11 constructed for removable mounting of a suitable miniature electric light bulb 12. This socket is formed with a cam'slot 13 as seen in Figure 1. A knob equipped pin 14; has its shank portion extending through and operable in this slot. The shank of the pin is attached to a longitudinally slidable core. member 15 mounted for telescoping move- 00 ment in the socket 11. A coiled spring 16 is associated therewith to normally retain the switch pin 14 in circuit open position. This" core membercomprises a cylindrical shell having abody of insulation operating as a filler and provided with an electrode 17 for cooperation with the spring pressed contact 8. This core member as a Whole is adapted'to he slipped telescopically into the socket 7 with the contact and electrode engaged to render thestructure ready for use.
Normally, the ends 18 of theelectrode are disengaged or spaced from the central contact 19 on the bulb 12. However, by grasping the knob on the switch pin 14 and pulling the knob overin the cam slot 13it is obvious that slidin motion of the core member is produced, w ereby toengage the electrode 18 with the contact 19 and to illuminate viously in the pro notion of a finger rin for carrying the bulb and current contro ling means together with a portable battery an a suitable flexible conductor between the bat- 0 uses andyadaptabilit of an appliance of thisclass areinnumerab e. It is particularly useful by, physicians. It is e ually well usable by automobile mechanics, y policemen, detectives, and in fact all classes and trades. The important fact to be borne in mind is that the structure is of a miniature size and yet permits the utilization of a comparatively powerful bulb. The fact that the structure may be worn on the finger of one hand permits the user to have freedom of use of both hands for accomplishing any other task that would be diflicult of accomplishmentw-hen using the ordinary type of flashlight. It is thought however that the uses, advantages and features of the invention will be quite clear to persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded 5 unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size materials and rearrangement of detai s coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A portable flashli ht of the character described comprising a nger ring having an i integral socket member formed on one side thereof and projecting forwardl therefrom and having an internally threa ed end portion, a light bulb detachably mounted in the threaded end ortion of the socket member and a manual y operable sprin controlled electric contact member dispose for sliding movement through the opposite end of the socket member for enga ement with the contact of the light bulb or illuminating the 25 same.
2. A portable flashli ht of the character described comprising a nger ring having an integral socket member formed on one side thereof and projecting forwardl therefrom so and having an internally threa ed forward end portion, said socket member being further provided with a circumferentially and longitudinally extending cam slot, said socket member open at its opposite end, a light bulb as detachably mounted in the threaded end portion of the socket member, a manually operable spring controlled electric contact member disposed for rotary and longitudinal sliding movement through the opposite end of the socket member for engagement with the contact of the light bulb at its inner end and having its opposite end projecting rearwardly from the socket member; means on the rearwardly protruding portion of the slidable contact member for detachably connecting a current conductin wire thereto and an operating pin anchoref in the slidable contact member and extending laterally therefrom through the slot in the socket member. In testimony whereof I aflix m si ature.
