This invention relates to an egg case filler formed by a plurality of cross walls one series of which are internally slotted to accommodate the other series which are edgenotched to interlock therewith. Of particular novelty and utility is the formation of the internal slots which are in the general shape of the letter D with lateral extensions at opposite ends of the straight sides, the arrangement being such as to facilitate the assembly and interlocking therewith of the edgenotched walls.

The conventional 6 X 6 egg case filler comprises a series of walls A interlocked with a second series of walls B, suitable formations being provided at points of intersection to permit the two series of walls to cross each other in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 1.

n According to my invention the walls A are internally slotted at 10 in the form of a relatively narrow letter D whereby there is provided a straight side 11. Near the two ends of the bowed side 12 each slot is extended 0 laterally at 13 beyond the proximate ends of the straight side 10, and preferably the corners 14 at the juncture of such side with the slot extensions are rounded for a purpose which will later appear. These lateral slot extensions are furthermore shown to be slightly offset beyond the ends of the straight side, so that a pair of shoulders 15 is thereby formed, the position of these shoulders bemisaligned with respect to the straight side in the manner clearly indicated in Figs.

The other series of cross walls B are provided with notches 16 in their opposite edges, these notches being slightly tapered by preference and extending inwardly for a distance which is approximately the same as the spac; ing between the lateral slot extensions 13 in the walls A. These notches 16 which are arranged one opposite the other in pairs, are spaced equidistantly the same as are'the slots 10, the purpose being to provide forthe two series of walls interengaging means which w l ta n the. Thefiller construction herein described and shown is advantageous in that assembly of the two series of walls is facilitated by reason of the means provided for preventing the one catching on the other prior to reaching final position. This means includes in the one the bowed sides of the D-slots which preliminarily hold the notched edges of the other out of engaging position, the clearance afiiorded around the corner 14: and within the lateral slot extensions 13 by which the notched edges may pass into or out of such extensions without any bending adjacent such edges, etc. It

should be noted also that the width and curvature of the D-slots are such as to cause the notched walls to bow only to the extent that they remain under a tension which is neutral, that is, these walls are bent longitudinally along a radius and through an arc of such dimensions as not to break and yet not to slide away from the curved sides 12 with a consequent straightening and engagement with the sides defining the slot extensions 13. This feature is of importance during the assembly of the various cross walls, as otherwise the tendency to straighten up would interfere somewhat with the longitudinal movement of these walls to final position. Also, when finally assembled, each cross wall B is adequately supported on opposite Sides by means which is positive and abrupt, as distinguished from one which is inclined or curved in relation to the engaged surface. The filler in its entirety may be collapsed in the usual manner and when opened out for use all the wall components thereof will be perfectly and properly aligned to define cells of an exact and uniform size.

I claim:

1. A filler having cross walls one of which is edge-notched to interlock with the other wherein is a D-slot through which the first wall is extended, the edges defining the D- slot resenting a bowed portion the ends of whic are shouldered and extended past a connecting straight portion to accommodate the notched wall when bowed without catching upon the notches in the edges thereof and to support the notched wall when straightened between the straight and shouldered portions which lie upon opposite sides of said wall.

2. A filler comprising interlocking cross walls one of which is edge-notched and the other internally slotted in D-form with oil'- set lateral extensions past the straight side thereof roviding clearance spaces for the edges of the notched wall when received therewithin in bowed form, the curved side of the slot having an arc and length such as to accommodate the bowed wall while permitting its notched edges to lie within the lateral extensions the offsets whereof cooperate with the straight side to present opposite sup orts for the notched wall when in straightened condition.
