This invention relates to a burglar alarm for doors, windows or the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means for firing a bla-nk cartridge when an unauthorized attempt is made to enter a building through a window or door equipped with this device.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter' fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure l is a perspective view showing the device applied to a window in such a manner that it will be operated through the opening movement of either the upper or lower sash.
Figure 2 is an end view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the device, with the firing pin held in retracted position by the locking member.
Figure t is a longitudinal sectional view through the device, with the parts in firing position.
1n these views, l indicates a body which is of substantiallysemi-circular shape in cross section and which is formed with the transverse opening 2 adjacent one end which divides the body into the barrel part 3 and the part 4 which forms a guideway for the firing pin. The iiring pin comprises a inember` o having a pointed end 6 and a stem 7 which has its free end bent at rightangles to provide the part 8. The member 5 is slldably supported by a part of the body, and the upper end of the stem is also slidablysupported by a part of the body. A coil spring 9 is placed on a part of the stem and presses against the member 5 and a part of the body and tends to hold the firing pin projected.
A pair of shoulders l() is formed on one end of the body opposite that which carries the barrel 3, and by pulling upon the part 8 of the firing pin to retract the pin and then turning the pin in one direction or the other,

said part 8 can be placed on one shoulder or the other. This will hold the pin retracted. A blank cartridge, such as shown at A, is adapted to he placed in the barrel 3 and then, when the firing pin is turned by a pressure upon the part 8, it moves said part `8 off the shoulder, and the spring will throw the firing pin forwardly and cause its pointed end 6 to strike the cartridge and thus rexplode the same.
Figure l shows the device placed on the lower rail of a top sash B, with the part 8 of the firing pin extending over the top rail of the bottom sash C. Thus ifthe bottom sash is raised or the top sash lowered, the part 8 will be pushed off the shoulder so that the spring can project the firing pin against the cartridge and thus fire the saine. This will give warning that an attempt is being made to gain access to the building through the i window. Of course, the device could be placed adjacent the door so that the opening of the door would move the part 8 off the shoulder to permit the spring to project the pin against the cartridge.
In order to hold the firing pin retracted, I provide a loop ll which is pivoted to a part of the body in such a manner that it can be swung under the part 8 of the iiring pin when the pin is retracted to hold the same in this position. The body can be attached to a support by means of the screws l2 and by having the two shoulders thereon, the device can be placed in various positions and the part 8 of the locking pin moved to engage either shoulder.

It is to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Vhat l claim is A. burglar alarm comprising a body of substantially semi-circular shape in cross section and having a transverse opening in its top portion adjacent one end of the body, the part between the opening and said end having a bore therein for receiving a cartridge and the opposite wall of the opening having a circular hole therein, a firing pin comprising a cylindrical member having a pointed outer end guided in said hole and a substantially L-shaped stem connected with the cylindrical member and passing through the body, the end of the body farthest removed from the transverse opening having a hole therein through Which the stem passes, a spring encircling the stem and bearing aga-inst the cylindrical member and an inA terior wall of the body, a. pair of spaced shoulders on that end of the body through which the stem passes, either shoulder engaging the Short arm of the stem to hold the iring pin, retracted, a part of the stem passing between the shoulders and a loop pivotally connected with the body and adapted to be swung into engagement with the short arm of the stem when the short arm is moved to a position to free it of the shoulders to hold the firing pin retracted.
