lhe invention relates to containers.
When a flaky, fiuify or powderous substance is packed into a drum, that is, a container having relatively rigid walls, such as a fibre container, the necessary amount can not be dumped into the drum'without tampering or shaking down and some of the ma terial spills out and the drum has to be made longer than necessary to take the actual amount of material. Furthermore, the material may sift through the regular cover of the drum container. The object of this invention is to overcome the, above disadvantages by providing a tube of flexible material, secured within and at the mouth of the container, which can be pulled out to form a filling extension to facilitate packing and which, when the drum is filled, can be folded, tied, or otherwise fastened over the contents and beneath-the cover to protect the contents and prevent sifting.
The invention further consists'in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claim at the conclusion hereof.
lln the drawings Fig. 1 is a container embodyingthe invention in condition for fill- Fig. 2 is a view of the filled container, parts being broken away and parts being shown in 1 section;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the mouth portion of the container;
Fig.4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 showing a modification.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a drum or stifi-walled container which, as shown, has a siding 6 of fibre and is adapted to receive a cover, here shown as formed'by a fibre disk 8 and a reinforcing metal band 9 crimped to said disk and having a depending portion 10 fitting over the sid- A tube 11 of flexible material, such as paper, has one of its ends 12 secured to the drum 5 at the mouth, in any suitable manner. When the tube is formed of paper a suitable piece of paper is folded into a tube and its adjoining edges secured together by suitable adhesive. As shown in Fig. 4, the end 12 of re the tube 11 is secured to the inner wall of the container adjacent a reinforcing metal mouth band 13, by adhesive, said tube projecting downwardly into the container but adapte to be pulled up, as shown by the dotted line FE .portionl4, and to be extended upwardly be- 1 yond the mouth of the container, as shown in full in Fig. 1, for the filling operation, and then to be folded down over the contents after filling, as shown in Fig. 2.
As shown in Fig. 3, the end 12 of the tube,
V in addition to being secured at the mouth by adhesive, is extended over the mouth at 15 and secured thereto by adhesive, after which the mouth-band 13 is rolled into crimping c5 engagement with the siding and with said. tubing, as indicated at lfi in Fig. 3.
With the above constructions, when the flexible tube is pulled up from the interior of the drum to the position shown in Fig. 1 it forms an extended filling mouth for the drum which permits finely comminuted, flaky or powderous material to be readily packed in the drum and permits of tamping without danger of spilling the material and thereby t5 permits the drum to be made shorter than usual, resulting in a considerable saving of container material and shipping space. After the drum is filled the tubing 11 1s folded back over the contents and may have its open end twisted about and tied up like a bag by any suitable fastening means so that it efiectively prevents the sifting of the fine material through the small spaces between the container and cover and forms an efficient seal. Thus, the combination of the tube 11 with the drum facilitates filling, economizes on the drum construction and shipping space and prevents waste of material in transit.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
The combination with a shipping drum having fibre siding and a reinforcing metal mouth-band extending over the top edge of said siding, of a tube of flexible material crimped to the mouth of the drum by said metal band, said tube providing an extensible filling mouth and a protective covering for the contents of the drum.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
EDWIN F. HULBERT.
