This invention relates to the stereotype plate casting box of a casting machine of the type in which the concave back moves away from the rotatable core or cylinder to open the mold and I have shown it in connection with a machine of the horizontal type.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and easily operated construction by which the back, in addition to its movement away from the cylinder, can be moved sideways to facilitate and simplify the insertion of the matrix, its replacement and its inspection. The invention also involves the securing of these results in a simple inanner involving only a few parts and of such a nature that the casting box can be restored to an accurate position for casting ina simple and convenient manner and without complicating the mechanism of the machine or changing the motion by which the back is moved toward and from the core or cylinder.
'Other objects and advantages of the invention will. appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had tothe accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is an end view of a casting mold of the type mentioned showing a preferred em-r bodiment of this invention and illustrating the mold in closed position and 30 Fig. 2 is a similar view showing in dotted lines the position of the back when it is drawn away from the cylinder in the usual manner and, in full lines, the position of the back whenshifted for manipulation of the matrix.
lVith my invention the core or cylinder is of the usual construction and it co-operates with the concave back 11. The back is shown as having the usual matrix holders l2 and as mounted on a frame 13 which is moved up and down toward the cylinder by a crank 14 and link 15' as is usual in certain class of stereotype plate making machines.
The reciprocable frame 1 3 which is, of course, mounted to move in a straight line is provided with an extension 16 at one side which may be flat. The back 12 is mounted on four rollers 18 which, when the back is in casting position rest in four depressions 17 so as to register the back accurately with the 50 cylinder and avoid all adjustments and'diificulties about having the parts in registration.
at the time of casting.
lVhen the done by the rotation 10, the back, 11 move s'downto the dotted-line the cylinder 10. At this'time it ismoved out plate is to be delivered, whi ch isil of the core or cylinder e u 7 v V u I position in Fig. 2 where 1t 1s entlrelybelow;
on the extension 16 in anydesired way. I T
have shown a hand-grip 20 by which itcan be pulled forward to the'full line position shown inFig.2.
Now the matrix Mean be taken out, inspect ed or replaced without interference with the other mechanism, particularly the cylinder. matrix holder12 with its clip can be reached It will'be seen that in this position the inner and the outer one is in a position tobeoperated freely at a distance from the rest of the mechanism of the machine.
VVhenqthematrixisput back in the back the latter can be rolled back to the position shown in dotted lines by the rollers Then the and depressions.
parts 11 and 13 move as a single member, risaware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but what I do claim-is H 1. In a casting mold, the combination with two mold parts, one movable toward and from the other, of means for guiding the movable mold member to move substantially in a directiontransverse toits first named motion to expose its interior at the side of the other mold part.
2. In a stereotype'plate casting machine, the combination with a rotatable cylinder and a reciprocable back, of a frame on which the back rests movable toward and from the cylinder, said frame having an extension at (Fig. 2) and will register itself so' only a single form of the invention, I am I r one side for supportlng the back thereon at the side of the machine for the purpose described.
3. The combination with a casting mold comprising a cylinder and back and means for moving the back bodily toward and from the'cylinder, of guiding means for the back arranged transversely to the direction of motion of the back toward and from the cylinder, whereby the back can be moved laterally to ex ose it at the side of the cylinder.
'4. n acurved stereotype plate casting machine, the combination with a reciprocable frame and means for reciprocating it, of a rotatable cylinder located in line with the directionof reciprocation, said frame being provided with a rest extending outwardly to one side of the cylinder, and a back located on the rest and movable thereon from a position'directly under the cylinder to a position atone side thereof for the manipulation of the matrix. 7
5. In a stereotype plate casting machine, the combination with a reciprocable frame and a back supported thereon, of a series of rollers on the'bottom of the back by which said back can be moved along said frame in a line transverse to the direction of reciprocation of the frame, said frame having clepressions in its surface for receiving said rollers when they are in a position to leave the back in casting position and constituting registering means therefor.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
JOHN A. ISBELL.
